@WooRinMoments — WooRin’s daily moments on YouTube
For our overseas readers ❤️
Last week I said I hoped for five full days. What I got this week was three. Monday and Friday passed at home, and the three days in between were the whole week. A while ago that would have bothered me, but lately I feel differently. It matters less how many days she goes out and more what she carries back on the days she does. It also happened to be the week the whole country was talking about football. At the office and over lunch, the first subject was always last night’s match. I watched with the sound almost all the way down at dawn, then gave up halfway through when the baby woke. I dozed against the window on the commuter bus, and the person ringing the doorbell at eight in the evening was, again, me. If one thing was different, it was that our apartment was unusually loud this week. WooRin brought home something that makes noise, and she did not let go of it for three days.
Monday (6/15) – A morning with no bag to pack
There was no daycare note on this day. It had been a while since I saw her bag still sitting by the front door on a Monday morning, and on the walk to the bus stop I thought for a moment that this week was going to be a short one.
Tuesday (6/16) – The thing in her hand was glowing
At lunch on Tuesday the table talk was all football. I mostly just listened. Whenever the World Cup comes up, what surfaces for me is not a match but a barracks. Somewhere in my early twenties there was a summer when all of us crowded in front of one television and shouted ourselves hoarse. Back then I only wanted to be anywhere else. What comes back now isn’t the game — it’s the few minutes when everyone in that room was looking the same direction.
When I opened the door at eight, WooRin was holding a little stick in both hands and shaking it. Every shake made a rattle, and something inside flashed a few times. The surface was covered in stickers stuck on at every possible angle, because the hands that stuck them there are small. One was folded over on itself, half attached. That was the one I liked best.
I put out my hand to ask for a look and she whipped it behind her back — then a moment later brought it over on her own and shook it right in front of my face. “This, this,” she said. That phrase, the one that grew on her so much last week, is still doing all the work. When a two-year-old has something to show you but not the word for it yet, a pointing finger and those two syllables cover almost everything.
Getting her out of her clothes for a bath, I caught a warm smell on her sleeve. Not last week’s smell — this one was closer to bread straight out of the oven. I held the sleeve to my nose for a while, and she stood next to me sniffing along, copying. I have no idea who she picked that up from during the day. Either way, two things came into this house this week: something that glows, and the smell of bread.
Wednesday (6/17) – One, two, and then five
Wednesday was busy, so I ate lunch in fifteen minutes and got back to my desk. Before opening anything work-related, I watched a short video. WooRin was sitting on the floor, carefully setting something down. I turned the volume almost off and watched it twice.
What she was holding was a slice of bread. She laid one down and placed another on top, and her hand slowed right down for the second one. You could see through the screen that she was worried it would topple. When someone nearby started counting, she made sounds along with them. Half the syllables were mush, but the rhythm was exact. At the end she threw both arms straight up. Apparently she has learned that when the counting is over, you cheer.
At dinner I ran a little test. I counted on my fingers, and she kept up fine to three, then went back to the beginning at four. Every time, back to the beginning at four. But the second I raised my arms, she copied that without fail. She learned the cheer before she learned the numbers. It sounds backwards, but honestly, grown-ups also prefer the celebration to the arithmetic.
A dry piece of bread came out of her bag, with a person-shaped hole punched through the middle. I held it up to my eye and looked at her through the hole. She laughed, ducked her face out of view, then pushed it right back in. She must have played this with someone during the day too. Right now, nothing in the world beats a game where something disappears and comes back.
Thursday (6/18) – The bread that never made it
On the train home Thursday I sat down and noticed a small red mark on my cuff — from carrying her that morning, probably. It wasn’t until I got home that I worked out it was strawberry jam.
In a few photos she was gripping a spoon and spreading something across a slice of bread. This is the same hand that was about halfway to mastering a spoon last week. But something new showed up here. The bread kept sliding away from her, so she was pinning the plate down with her other hand. That wasn’t a pose someone had arranged for her. She had let it slide a few times and then found the fix herself. I looked at that photo for a long while, because a two-year-old solves a problem in exactly the order an adult does.
The finished slice, I gather, got folded in half and went straight into her mouth. She picked at her dinner that evening and I couldn’t figure out why — the answer had already happened hours earlier. Knowing that, I still tried for one more spoonful, and lost. There is no way to win against someone who is already full, whether they are two or thirty-six.
The last photo is the one that stayed with me. She was walking off somewhere holding a plate in both hands, seen from behind — and one corner of the bread on the plate was already gone. On her way to give it away, she had checked her own share first. She has no idea yet what sharing is, and still her steps were careful because she did not want to drop the plate. Somehow that back-view looked more trustworthy to me than any tidy little act of generosity would have.
Friday (6/19) – The blanket kept flashing
There was no daycare note on this day either. But on Friday night she tried to fall asleep still holding that light-up stick, so even after I turned off the lamp, something under the blanket kept flashing for a good while.
Looking back on the week
It was a three-day week. And yet, counting what actually came into this house, it wasn’t a small haul. One stick that lights up when you shake it, a handful of stickers pointing in every direction, a dry piece of bread with a person punched out of the middle, a jam stain on a sleeve. Add the counting that keeps restarting at four, and that’s a decent load for three days.
All week she did something different with the same slice of bread. She smelled it, stacked it, punched shapes out of it, spread jam on it, and at the end carried it to someone else. To an adult, sandwich bread is what you rush through at breakfast. To a two-year-old it’s material that lasts three days. That gap, I was reminded again this week, is a problem on my end and not hers.
Next week I hope there are five days, and if there aren’t, that’s fine too. I won’t be there either way, and I’ll go on finding out what happened days later, from the smell on a sleeve or the crumbs in a bag.
