그날 밤은 길었다. 새벽에 네다섯 번은 깬 것 같았다. 일어나서 칭얼거리다 쪽쪽이 물려주면 다시 잠들고, 또 깨고. 코가 막혀서 그런 줄 알면서도 해줄 수 있는 게 많지 않았다. 자정 넘어 침대 옆에 앉아 아이의 콧등을 손가락으로 살살 문지르며, 내일 출근해서 또 졸겠구나 하는 생각보다 이 작은 코가 빨리 뚫렸으면 좋겠다는 생각이 먼저 들었다. 약을 자꾸 뱉어내는 아이를 어떻게 달래야 할지, 새벽 세 시의 거실에서 한참을 고민했다.
목요일 (3/13) – 잠투정의 밤
이 날 알림장은 길었다. “분유 다 먹고, 응가까지 해서 든든, 시원했을 텐데, 졸려하며 귀를 계속 파서 안아서 토닥여 줬는데도 눈은 계속 감고 계속 떼쓰며 울더라고요.” 이래도 저래도 다 싫다고 바둥바둥 악쓰며 우는 아이를 겨우 안아 재웠다는 선생님 글을 읽으며, 회의실에서 잠깐 눈을 감았다. 새벽 내내 깨서 숙면도 못한 아이를 하루 종일 안고 달랜 선생님께 어떻게 감사를 전해야 할지, 적당한 말이 떠오르지 않았다. 그래도 오감 선생님이 오신 형님반 놀이수업에 참관까지 했다니, 그 작은 몸으로 어떻게 그걸 다 해냈을까 싶었다.
퇴근하고 집에 들어가니 아이는 또 눈을 비비고 있었다. 조금 놀아주다 재우려 하는데 잠투정. 쪽쪽이를 질겅거리며 씹길래 치발기를 쥐어주고 바운서에 앉혔더니, 마음에 들었는지 바운서를 흔들흔들 타며 치발기를 열심히 씹다가 그대로 잠이 들었다. 거실 불을 어둡게 해놓고 한참을 쳐다봤다. 침이 늘고 잇몸이 간질거리는 시기가 온 것 같았다. 밤잠은 또 짜증을 내서 결국 아기띠로 안아 재웠다. 어깨가 아렸지만, 가슴팍에서 스르르 풀리는 아이의 무게가 그날의 보상이었다. 약 시간이 애매해져서 오후 두 시로 옮겨달라는 의뢰서를 마지막으로 적고 나서야 거실 불을 껐다.
금요일 (3/14) – 여벌옷이 다 떨어진 날
“즐거운 주말 보내세요 ☺️”로 시작한 짧은 알림장이었지만, 내용은 결코 짧지 않았다. 등원 전 분유가 소화가 안 되었는지 몇 번 올려 옷을 갈아입혀 주셨고, 오후 낮잠 전에는 응가를 묽게 해서 옷에 다 샜다고 했다. 엉덩이 닦아주고, 바지는 응가 묻은 것만 씻어 보내주신 선생님. 알림장 끝에는 “오늘 여벌옷 다 사용했어요 ㅎㅎ;; 월요일에 상하의 2장씩 보내주세요”라는 당부. 그리고 이번 주 처음으로 “콧물 거의 안 흘렸어요”라는 한 줄이 있었다. 그 한 줄을 회사 화장실에서 읽고, 한참을 거울 앞에서 멍하니 서 있었다.

The second week of March, and WooRin’s second week at daycare. The tension from the first week hadn’t even worn off when a runny-nose cold quietly snuck up on her over the weekend, and from Monday morning on, I was packing her bag with little envelopes of medicine, handkerchiefs, and changes of clothes. Every time I opened the daycare notebook on the bus to work, my heart sank a little. Standing in a packed subway, gripping the handrail, I’d read sentences like “she cried so hard every time I wiped her runny nose” and just stand there for a long time. The fact that, because both my wife and I work, we’ve left our six-month-old in someone else’s hands while I sit in front of a monitor at the office — that quietly weighed on me all week. Still, when I opened the front door after work and saw WooRin kicking her little feet in our nanny’s arms, lighting up at the sight of me, I’d hold her for a long time every evening, wipe the dried mucus under her nose, dab on some Bepanthen, trim her tiny nails, and fill in the rest of the day that way. Our little girl who had been eating and sleeping so well sniffled all week long, and our nights as a couple grew shorter right alongside hers.
Monday (3/10) — Runny Nose and Fingernail Scratches
The cold I thought had eased up over the weekend reared its head again at daycare. The teacher wrote, “She bursts into tears every time I wipe her nose, so it’s been hard to know what to do.” Still, I felt a wave of relief at the next lines: she slept for an hour at her morning nap, woke up and ate a whole container of baby food with such gusto, finished her formula, burped properly, and slept soundly. I was grateful for the small observations too — that when she’s sleepy she digs at her ears or yanks at her hair, and sometimes sucks her fingers. At the end of the note: “There’s a fingernail scratch by her mouth, so please trim her nails a bit more.”
That night, I laid her across my lap, shined my phone flashlight on her hands, and got out the baby nail scissors. Her nails are thinner than a sheet of paper, and watching them in the light, I thought: I haven’t been looking closely enough at something this small. I sat there staring for a long time. I also belatedly realized the nipple on her last bottle had a tear, so I sorted out the good ones and packed them separately for the next morning. There was a faint drool rash under her mouth, so I dabbed on a tiny bit of Bepanthen, and I lay there for a long while listening to her stuffed-up breathing — air leaking out through her mouth instead of her nose.
Tuesday (3/11) — Bepanthen and Handkerchiefs
Just when I thought she was getting better, the runny nose came back even worse. The teacher wrote, “Both her nose and her drool are just nonstop. Even when I keep applying the Bepanthen, her mouth area gets covered in mucus and drool again, so the rash isn’t really healing.” I read that on the way to work and called my wife the moment lunch hit — let’s take her to the doctor right after pickup. Still, she ate her baby food really, really well, and apparently in tummy-time practice, she hasn’t figured out how to scoot forward yet, so she just spins in circles and goes backwards. I read that part and laughed out loud staring out the bus window.
That evening, I set the bag of cold medicine from the clinic on the kitchen table and packed two new handkerchiefs and two new bibs. Writing “please let us know if you need more” in the daycare notebook, I thought: this is less of a daycare bag and more of a tiny emergency kit. But I could see that thanks to the Bepanthen, the scratch and rash by her mouth had healed a lot, so I added an extra line of heartfelt thanks to the teacher. Watching WooRin kick her legs constantly while drinking her formula, I marveled that this tiny pair of legs still had a day’s worth of energy left in them.
Wednesday (3/12) — The Head-Tossing Baby
“I feel so bad — every time I wipe her nose, she cries…” Reading that one line on the subway, I realized for the first time that this kind of guilt flows in both directions. I’m not the only one feeling sorry. As for tummy-time practice, when the teacher gave a little push to the soles of her feet, WooRin pressed her hands into the floor, wriggled, and inched forward just a tiny bit. After a few tries she’d get tired and immediately make it clear she “didn’t want to do it anymore.” Tossing her head back over and over while eating her baby food. I wrote back saying she does the exact same thing at home, and laughed again.
That night was long. I think she woke up four or five times before dawn. She’d fuss, take her pacifier, fall back asleep, and wake again. I knew it was because her nose was blocked, but there wasn’t much I could do. Past midnight, sitting on the edge of the bed, gently rubbing the bridge of her nose with my finger, the thought that hit me first wasn’t “I’m going to be exhausted at work tomorrow” — it was “I just want this little nose to clear up soon.” Sitting in the living room at 3 a.m., I wondered for a long time how to coax her into not spitting out her medicine.
Thursday (3/13) — A Night of Sleep Tantrums
This day’s note was long. “She finished all her formula and even pooped, so she should have felt nice and full and relieved, but she kept rubbing her ears looking sleepy. I held her and patted her, but her eyes stayed shut and she just kept fussing and crying.” Reading the teacher’s account of finally getting WooRin — who flailed and screamed that nothing was right, no matter what — to fall asleep in her arms, I closed my eyes for a moment in the meeting room. I couldn’t think of the right words to thank a teacher who’d held and soothed our baby all day after a night of broken sleep. And on top of that, she even went to observe the older kids’ sensory class. How did such a tiny body get through all of that?
When I got home from work, WooRin was rubbing her eyes again. I tried to play with her a little before putting her down, but the sleep tantrum kicked in. She was chewing on her pacifier, so I handed her a teether and sat her in the bouncer — turns out she liked it, because she rocked herself in the bouncer, gnawed away at the teether, and fell asleep right there. I dimmed the living room lights and watched her for a long time. Looks like the drool-and-itchy-gum stage has arrived. Bedtime brought another round of fussing, so I ended up putting her to sleep in the baby carrier. My shoulders ached, but the weight of her body slowly relaxing against my chest was the day’s reward. The last thing I wrote that night was a request to move her medicine time to 2 p.m., since the schedule had become awkward, and only then did I turn off the living room light.
Friday (3/14) — The Day We Ran Out of Spare Clothes
The note started with “Have a wonderful weekend ☺️” — short, but the contents were anything but. Her morning formula didn’t sit well, so she spit up a few times and had to be changed. Before her afternoon nap, she had a runny poop that leaked all over her clothes. The teacher wiped her bottom, rinsed off the soiled pants, and sent them back. At the end of the note: “We used up all the spare clothes today haha;; please send 2 tops and 2 bottoms on Monday.” And then, for the first time this week: “Almost no runny nose today.” I read that one line standing in the office bathroom and just stared blankly into the mirror for a long while.
Friday evening, I held her a little longer than usual. All week, runny noses and drool and poop and sleep tantrums had taken turns shaking our little girl, and right beside her, my wife and I were being shaken too. But that one sentence — that on the very last day of the week, her nose had finally calmed down — felt like a small reward for getting through it all. For the weekend: two sets of tops and bottoms, more handkerchiefs, trim her nails again, and sleep deeply right next to her. The to-do list in my head had never been so simple.
Closing the Week
Week two of daycare started with a runny nose and ended with a runny nose. Reading the daycare notebook all the way through, you can see — tucked between the lines — just how closely the teacher is watching our little girl. The way she digs at her ears when she’s sleepy, the habit of yanking on her hair, tossing her head back while eating, that sensitive streak that turns straight into tears the moment she dislikes something. Tiny scenes that even we, her parents, would have missed — they arrived in our hands one envelope at a time, every day. We sent her to daycare because both of us work and there was no other choice, but at least this week, I could quietly tell myself that the choice wasn’t entirely wrong. Next week, I hope her nose clears up completely. I hope the first little tooth pushing up through her gums comes in without too much pain. I hope she scoots forward in tummy time, even just by a hand’s width. Writing down these small, specific wishes — that’s how I close out the week.
