3월 셋째 주, 하린이가 어린이집에 다닌 지도 어느덧 3주째다. 주말 동안 코감기가 한풀 꺾인 듯해서 월요일 아침은 마음이 한결 가벼웠다. 그런데 또 화요일이 되니 콧물이 줄줄 흐르더라는 소식. 아침마다 약 봉투를 가방에 넣을지 말지 고민하다가, 결국 손수건 한 장 더 챙겨 보내는 걸로 매듭 짓는 한 주였다. 출근 버스에서 알림장을 읽다가, 회의 중간에 휴대폰을 슬쩍 보다가, 점심 먹다가도 “지금쯤 분유 먹고 있겠지”, “지금쯤은 또 잠 안 자고 보채겠지” 그림이 자꾸 그려졌다. 맞벌이라는 이유로 6개월된 아이를 떼어 놓은 게 어디 익숙해질 일인가. 다만 이번 주 하린이는 옹알이가 부쩍 길어졌고, 앉았다 엎드리는 동작을 혼자 시도하기 시작했고, 금요일엔 얼떨결에 뒤집기까지 한 번 성공했다. 그 자리에 내가 없었다는 게 아쉬우면서도, 그래도 매일 한 뼘씩 자라고 있다는 사실이 이상하게 위로가 됐다.
월요일 (3/17) – 코감기가 떨어진 날
출근 버스를 기다리던 7시 10분, 정류장에서 입김이 하얗게 나왔다. 주말 내내 코를 훌쩍이던 하린이가 아침엔 콧물 없이 깔끔하게 일어나 줘서, 어린이집 가방을 메워주는 손이 평소보다 가벼웠다. 회사 가는 길 내내 “오늘은 좀 편하게 지내려나” 싶은 마음이 들었다.
점심을 먹다 말고 휴대폰을 봤더니, 아내가 “오늘은 컨디션 좋다더라” 메시지를 보내놨다. 안 보이는 시간 동안 하린이가 함박웃음을 자주 보였다는 말이 어찌나 반갑던지. 형님반에서 체육 선생님이 와서 놀이수업을 했고, 우리 하린이는 아직 어려서 구경만 했다는데, 그 장면이 그려졌다. 데굴데굴한 눈으로 언니 오빠들 뛰는 모습을 빤히 쳐다보고 있었을 것이다.
퇴근하고 8시 넘어 집에 오니 하린이는 점퍼루에서 발을 동동 구르며 놀고 있었다. 안아 들었더니 평소보다 손발이 따뜻하고, 코끝이 보송했다. 손톱이 좀 길어졌길래 자려고 누운 김에 깎아주려다가, 한 손은 못 깎고 다음 날로 미뤘다. 잠든 얼굴이 오랜만에 편해 보였다.
화요일 (3/18) – 다시 콧물, 그리고 분유 거부
아침에 가방을 챙기는데, 어쩐지 하린이가 또 코를 훌쩍였다. 어제 멀쩡하던 애가 하룻밤 새 또 콧물이 도지다니. 출근 지하철에서 환승하면서 “오늘 오후가 고비겠다” 싶었다. 잠 예민한 애라 컨디션 한 번 무너지면 그날은 종일 보채는 걸 우리가 제일 잘 안다.
오후 2시쯤 회의실에 앉아 있는데 알림장이 떴다. 친구 분유 먹이는 동안 쪽쪽이가 옆으로 떨어졌고, 그게 늦게 입에 들어갔다고 화가 단단히 났다는 얘기. 게다가 분유 통이 제대로 안 닫혀서 윗옷이 다 젖었다는 부분에선 나도 모르게 “아이고…” 소리가 나왔다. 하린이는 한 번 삐지면 풀어주기가 쉽지 않다. 회의 중에도 자꾸 그 장면이 머릿속에 그려져서 노트북 화면이 한참 흐릿했다.
집에 와서 안아 든 순간 하린이는 눈을 벌써 비비고 있었다. 너무 피곤했는지 잠깐 자다가 깨고, 깨다가 또 칭얼거리고. 옆에서 토닥토닥 등을 두드려주는데, 목이 살짝 쉰 게 느껴졌다. 미안한 마음에 한참을 안고만 있었다. 손톱은 결국 울려가며 몇 개만 깎고, 나머지는 또 다음 날로.
수요일 (3/19) – 아빠를 부른 날
아침에 너무 곤히 자는 하린이를 깨워서 보내려니 마음이 또 무거웠다. 차라리 좀 더 재울까 싶었지만 출근 시간이 빠듯해 어쩔 수 없었다. 버스 안에서 자꾸 미안한 생각이 들어 창밖만 봤다.
오전 11시쯤, 짧은 메시지 하나에 그날 하루가 다 풀렸다. “아~빠! 아~빠! 하더라고요.” 회사 자리에서 그 글자를 보고 한참 멍하니 있었다. 아직 의미를 알고 부른 건 아니겠지만, 그래도 그 입에서 ‘빠’ 비슷한 소리가 나왔다는 사실만으로도 하루 종일 멍청하게 웃고 다녔다. 점심 메뉴도 뭘 먹었는지 기억이 안 난다.
퇴근하고 안아 들었더니 콧물은 또 살짝 흐르긴 했지만 컨디션은 좋아 보였다. 약은 일단 안 먹이기로 했다. 평소 같으면 마지막 분유를 든든히 먹고 잠드는 애가, 오늘은 안 먹겠다고 손사래를 치며 짜증을 내더니 그대로 밤잠으로 직행. 의사표현이 점점 또렷해지는 게 신기하면서도, 한편으론 이 작은 사람이 자기 의견을 가지기 시작했다는 게 새삼스러웠다.
목요일 (3/20) – 뒤로 뒤로 가는 배밀이
아침에 하린이가 좀처럼 눈을 못 떴다. 한참을 쓰다듬고 노래를 불러도 눈꺼풀이 무거워 보여서, 안쓰러운 마음에 등원 가방을 챙기는 손이 자꾸 멈췄다. 요즘 부쩍 고단한가 보다. 어린이집 생활도 본격 3주차에 접어들었으니 몸도 마음도 적응하느라 애쓰고 있을 것이다.
점심 시간에 잠깐 짬이 나서 알림장을 다시 펼쳤다. 이제는 앉아 있다가 한 손으로 옷을 꽉 잡고 몸을 틀어보기도 한단다. 배밀이는 전진은 못하고 뒤로 뒤로 후진만 한다는 대목에서 혼자 웃었다. 아빠 닮아서 시작은 거꾸로 하는 모양이다. 친구가 옆에 오면 빤히 쳐다보다가 팔을 뻗어 바둥바둥한다는 말도 있었는데, 그 장면이 너무 또렷이 그려져서 점심을 다 못 먹고 휴대폰만 들여다봤다.
저녁에 집에 와서 거실 매트에 눕혀 보니, 정말로 발로 바닥을 차며 엉덩이를 뒤로 빼더라. 한참을 그렇게 기어다니다가 매트 끝에 머리가 닿으니 또 끙끙거리며 도와달라고 했다. 그 모습이 어찌나 귀여운지, 영상으로 잠깐 남겨뒀다.
금요일 (3/21) – 얼떨결의 뒤집기
금요일 아침 알림장은 짧았다. “행복하고 즐거운 주말 보내세요.” 그리고 그 아래에, 폭탄 같은 한 줄. 오늘 뒤집기를 한 번 얼떨결에 성공했다는 소식. 출근버스에 막 오르려던 참이었는데, 정류장에 그대로 멈춰 서서 한참을 그 글자만 보고 있었다.
엉덩이를 살짝 받쳐주긴 했다지만, 그래도 휙 하고 몸을 돌렸다는 거 아닌가. 그 이후로는 누워서 깔깔깔 웃기만 했다는데, 그 깔깔거리는 소리가 귀에 들리는 것 같았다. 회사 가는 내내 어쩐지 콧날이 시큰했다. 첫 뒤집기 순간을 내가 못 봤다는 사실이 아쉬우면서도, 어린이집에서 그 좋은 순간을 봐주신 선생님께 고마운 마음이 동시에 밀려왔다.
퇴근하고 집에 와서 하린이를 매트에 눕혀 놓고 한참을 기다렸다. 다시 한 번 보여달라고 옆에서 박수도 치고 이름도 불러봤지만, 정작 본인은 침만 흘리며 까르르 웃기만. 뭐, 괜찮다. 한 번 했으면 또 할 거다. 그 다음 번엔 내가 꼭 옆에 있을 수 있도록, 주말 동안은 좀 더 바닥에서 같이 뒹굴어야겠다고 다짐했다.
한 주를 마치며
이번 주는 컨디션이 오르락내리락 정신이 없었다. 월요일엔 다 나은 줄 알았다가 화요일엔 다시 콧물이 줄줄, 수요일부터는 또 좋아지고. 잠도 그랬다. 잘 자다가 한 번 어긋나면 종일 보채고, 또 어떤 날은 업혀서 곤히 잠들고. 그 와중에 옹알이가 길어졌고, 앉았다 엎드리는 동작이 늘었고, 배밀이는 후진만 가능했고, 금요일엔 뒤집기까지 한 번 성공했다. 일주일치 성장이 너무 가파르다. 회사에 앉아 있는 동안 이 모든 변화가 일어나고 있다는 걸 생각하면, 늘 마음 한구석이 시리지만 그래도 어린이집에서 잘 봐주시는 덕에 우리 하린이가 매일 새로워진다는 사실에 감사한다. 다음 주엔 뒤집기를 좀 더 자기 힘으로 해내는 모습을 볼 수 있길, 그리고 콧물이 이제는 정말로 작별해주길 바라본다.

The third week of March — somehow WooRin has already been at daycare for three weeks. Her runny nose seemed to have eased up over the weekend, so Monday morning felt a little lighter on my heart. But by Tuesday, the sniffles were back in full force. Every morning I’d stand there debating whether to tuck a packet of medicine into her bag, and in the end I’d just slip in an extra handkerchief and call it a day. On the bus to work, I’d sneak a look at the daycare app. In the middle of meetings, I’d peek at my phone. Even at lunch, little scenes kept playing in my head — “she’s probably having her bottle right about now,” “she’s probably fussing instead of napping right about now.” How could leaving a six-month-old behind ever feel normal, just because both parents work? Still, this week WooRin’s babbling stretched out longer, she started trying to push herself up from sitting on her own, and on Friday, almost by accident, she rolled over for the very first time. It stung that I wasn’t there to see it — but knowing she’s growing, just a little, every single day, was a strange kind of comfort.
Monday (3/17) — The Day the Cold Lifted
7:10 AM at the bus stop, my breath puffed out white in the cold. WooRin, who’d been sniffling all weekend, woke up with a clear nose for once, and my hands felt lighter than usual as I packed her daycare bag. The whole way to work, I kept thinking, “Maybe today she’ll have an easy time of it.”
I checked my phone mid-lunch and saw a message from my wife: “They said her mood’s good today.” Hearing that WooRin had been flashing those big smiles during the hours I couldn’t see her — I can’t tell you how much that meant. The PE teacher had come to do a play class with the older kids, and our WooRin, still too little to join in, just got to watch. I could picture it perfectly: those big round eyes glued to the older kids running around.
I got home after 8 PM, and there was WooRin in her Jumperoo, kicking her little feet with delight. When I scooped her up, her hands and feet were warmer than usual, and the tip of her nose felt nice and dry. Her nails had gotten a bit long, so I tried to trim them while laying her down for bed — got one hand done, gave up, and pushed the other to tomorrow. Her sleeping face looked peaceful for the first time in a while.
Tuesday (3/18) — Runny Nose Returns, and a Bottle Strike
As I was packing her bag in the morning, sure enough — WooRin sniffled. She’d been perfectly fine yesterday, and now overnight the runny nose was back. Switching trains on the subway to work, I thought, “This afternoon’s going to be rough.” She’s a sensitive sleeper, and once her mood goes south, she fusses all day — nobody knows that better than us.
Around 2 PM, I was sitting in a meeting when the daycare update came in. While the teacher was feeding another baby, WooRin’s pacifier slipped to the side, and by the time it got back into her mouth, she was furious. On top of that, the bottle wasn’t sealed properly and her shirt got soaked — when I read that part, an “oh no…” slipped out of me without thinking. Once WooRin’s upset, she’s not easy to win back. Even during the meeting, I kept replaying that scene in my head, and the laptop screen blurred for a long while.
The moment I picked her up at home, WooRin was already rubbing her eyes. She must’ve been so worn out — she’d doze off, wake up, then start fussing again. I patted her back gently, and I could feel a slight rasp in her voice. Feeling guilty, I just held her for the longest time. The nail trimming ended in tears again — got a few done, the rest pushed to tomorrow.
Wednesday (3/19) — The Day She Called for Dad
Waking WooRin up to send her off when she was sleeping so peacefully — my heart felt heavy all over again. I almost wanted to let her sleep more, but my work schedule was tight and I had no choice. On the bus, the guilt kept creeping in, and I just stared out the window.
Around 11 AM, one short message made my whole day. “She was saying ‘Da~da! Da~da!'” I sat at my desk staring at those letters, completely spaced out. She probably didn’t really know what she was saying yet, but just the fact that something close to “da-da” came out of that little mouth — I walked around grinning like an idiot all day. I can’t even remember what I had for lunch.
When I picked her up after work, her nose was running a bit again, but her mood seemed good. We decided to skip the medicine for now. WooRin usually drinks her last bottle of the day before falling asleep, but tonight she waved it away, fussed, and then crashed straight into bedtime. It’s amazing how clearly she expresses herself now — and at the same time, it hits me all over again that this tiny person is starting to have her own opinions.
Thursday (3/20) — The Backwards Belly Crawl
WooRin could barely open her eyes that morning. I stroked her face and sang to her for a while, but her eyelids stayed heavy, and packing her daycare bag, my hands kept stopping. She must be really worn out lately. She’s officially three weeks into daycare life now — her little body and heart are working so hard to adjust.
I stole a moment at lunch to open the daycare app again. Apparently she’s started gripping her clothes with one hand from a sitting position and twisting her body around. The part where it said her belly crawl only goes backwards, never forwards — that one made me laugh out loud. Takes after her dad, I guess, doing things in reverse. There was also a note about how when another baby comes near, she stares hard, then stretches out her arms and wiggles. I could picture it so vividly that I couldn’t finish my lunch — just kept staring at my phone.
That evening, I laid her down on the living room mat, and sure enough, she kicked at the floor and scooched her little bottom backwards. She crawled like that for a good while, and when her head bumped the edge of the mat, she started grunting for help. She was so adorable I had to grab a quick video.
Friday (3/21) — An Accidental Roll-Over
Friday’s daycare note was short. “Have a happy and lovely weekend.” And right below that, a bombshell of a sentence: WooRin had managed her first roll-over today, almost by accident. I was just about to step onto the bus when I read it, and I stopped right there at the stop, just staring at those words.
The teacher had given her bottom a little nudge, sure — but she still flipped herself right over, didn’t she? After that she apparently just lay there giggling away, and I swear I could hear that giggle in my ears. The whole way to work, my eyes kept stinging. I was sad I missed her very first roll-over, but at the same time, I felt this rush of gratitude toward the teacher who got to witness that beautiful moment.
After work, I came home, laid WooRin on the mat, and waited. I clapped, called her name, asked her to please show me one more time — but she just drooled and laughed her little head off. That’s okay. Once she’s done it, she’ll do it again. I made up my mind: this weekend, I’m going to spend more time on the floor with her, so I can be right there next time it happens.
Wrapping Up the Week
This week was a rollercoaster. Monday I thought she was all better, Tuesday the runny nose was back full force, then from Wednesday on she started bouncing back. Sleep was the same story — she’d sleep fine, then one bad night would leave her fussy all day, and other days she’d doze off peacefully on someone’s back. And in the middle of all that — her babbling stretched longer, she got better at pushing up from sitting, her belly crawl mastered the art of going backwards, and on Friday she pulled off her very first roll-over. A whole week’s worth of growth, and so steep. When I think about all of this happening while I’m sitting at my desk at work, there’s always this ache in the corner of my heart — but I’m so grateful that thanks to the wonderful teachers at daycare, our WooRin gets to become someone new every single day. Next week, I hope I get to see her roll over a little more on her own power — and that the runny nose finally, finally says goodbye for real.
