3월 첫째 주, 하린이는 첫 어린이집 생활을 시작했다. 맞벌이를 할 수 밖에 없어서 태어난지 6개월만에 하린이를 어린이집을 보내야 했다. 말도 못하는 우리 아이가 부모의 사랑을 온전히 받지 못하고 어린이집에 보내야해서 마음이 편치 않았다. 그치만 어린이집에서 똑똑한 선생님이 보살펴주고 가르쳐주는것도 나쁘지 않은 선택이라고 생각했다. 어린이집에 입소하기 위한 서류 준비와 어린이집에서 사용할 준비물 들을 꼼꼼히 체크했다. 하린이는 하필 콧물 감기가 같이 따라와서, 목소리도 쉬고 컨디션이 영 좋지 않은 채로 시작한 한 주. 약 봉투를 챙겨 보내고, 선생님의 알림장을 출근길 버스 안에서 읽고, 퇴근하고 돌아와 품에 안긴 작은 몸의 온도를 확인하는 것으로 하루가 마무리되는 날들이었다. 잘 웃고 잘 자고 잘 먹는 우리 아이가, 이번 주만큼은 조금 더 자주 보채고 조금 더 자주 안겨 있었다.

새벽 두 시가 넘은 시간에 알림장에 하린이의 하루 일과를 정리해서 올렸다. 7시 30분 기상, 7시 40분 분유, 10시 낮잠, 11시 30분 이유식, 13시 30분 두 번째 낮잠. 분홍약(항생제) 3ml는 냉장, 노란약(콧물약) 3ml는 실온. 졸려하면 쪽쪽이를 물려달라고, 기저귀는 식사 때마다 갈아준다고. 누가 봐도 알 수 있도록 한 자 한 자 적다 보니 어느새 이렇게 늦은 시간이었다.

오전 이유식을 먹다가 갑자기 얼굴이 새빨개지더니 엄청 힘을 줬다고 한다. “1차 시도에는 응가가 안 나오는지 잠깐 쉬다가 2차 시도! 할 때도 엄청 힘줘서~~ 변비인가? 했는데, 아주 예쁜 응가를 했더라고요 ㅎㅎㅎ” 선생님 글을 읽으면서 진짜로 소리 내서 웃었다. 하린이는 원래 먹을 때나 앉아 있을 때 응가를 한다. 그 새빨갛게 힘 주는 얼굴을 우리 부부는 이미 너무 잘 알고 있다.

The first week of March — WooRin started her life at daycare. Both my wife and I had no choice but to keep working, so we had to send her there just six months after she was born. The thought of our baby — who can’t even speak yet — being sent off without fully receiving her parents’ love sat heavy on my heart. But I told myself that being looked after and gently taught by a good teacher was, in its own way, not a bad choice. We went over every document for enrollment, and double-checked every single item on the supply list. And then, of all things, WooRin caught a runny-nose cold right at the start. Her voice went hoarse, her energy dipped — and that was how the week began. Sending her off with a packet of medicine, reading the teacher’s daily notes on the morning bus, and ending each day by checking the warmth of her tiny body in my arms after I came home — that was the rhythm of those days. Our girl who usually laughs well, sleeps well, eats well — just for this one week, fussed a little more, and stayed in our arms a little longer.
Monday (3/3) — A Hoarse Little Voice, a Quiet Signal
Over the weekend, WooRin’s voice had gone hoarse. Tuesday (3/4) — First Dose, First Handover

Her teacher’s note arrived in the morning. “Her cold really seems to be wearing her down. Maybe the medicine made her drowsy — she suddenly burst into tears in the middle of her baby food, and I just barely managed to soothe her enough to finish the meal.” Still, the line that read, “Our smiling little angel WooRin makes me smile without even trying” — that loosened something in my chest. I read that sentence twice on the subway. The teacher apologized for not getting many photos, but honestly, I felt bad for her — soothing my fussy girl all day must have been the harder job.
When I got home, I learned that even after pickup, WooRin had slept another two hours from the medicine. Apparently, while eating her morning baby food, her face suddenly turned bright red and she started pushing with all her might. “First attempt didn’t quite produce, so she took a little break. Then attempt number two — pushing super hard again! I started wondering, is she constipated? But nope, the loveliest little poop appeared, hehe.” Reading that, I actually laughed out loud. WooRin always poops while she’s eating or sitting up. That bright-red, all-her-might face? My wife and I know it by heart.
That night I wrote back. Reading the teacher’s note, I could picture every one of WooRin’s expressions, and I’d laughed the whole way through. I told her our girl is secretly stubborn — when she doesn’t want to eat and you keep trying, she clamps her mouth shut tight. Thursday (3/6) — Building Rep Dad, a Quick Hello

WooRin loves being looked at and being held, I added. She puts everything in her mouth, so if you could give the toys a quick wipe before she touches them, I’d really appreciate it. I wrote back at night. About the baby food: even when she fusses, she eats it all in the end — feeding her a bit faster, or offering some water in between, usually does the trick. About sleep: when she rubs her eyes and seems sleepy, even if you take her to lie down, she won’t actually sleep — but if you just let her keep playing, she’ll play a while longer and then drift off on her own. All those little tricks my wife and I had pieced together over months of trial and error — I wanted to pass them along to her teacher just as they were. The teacher also reminded me to send a family photo. I figured we’d take one over the weekend — the three of us, plus our dog Seol and our cat WooRi too — the whole family in one shot.
On the bus ride home, looking out the window, I thought about how long this week had felt. Her first daycare medication. The first handover notes. The notebook entries that stretched into the early hours every day. But Friday-evening WooRin clearly wore a lighter face than she had a few days before. When I lifted her up at the front door, I could feel her little nose was less stuffy.
