화요일 알림장은 8시 25분쯤 들어왔다. 애벌레 꾸미기 놀이를 하였다는 첫 줄에 이어, 지난번에 만나 보았던 애벌레에 대해서 이야기를 나누어 본 뒤 알록달록 예쁜 도트물감을 보고 어떤 색인지 이야기를 나누어 보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘도트물감’이라는 네 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 어떤 색이 있는지 언어로 표현해보고 제 입모양을 따라서 말해보는 놀이를 해보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘입모양을 따라서 말해보는’이라는 표현이 또 한 번 적혀 있었다. 한 달 전 처음 등장한 같은 표현이, 이번 주는 색이름이라는 한 칸 더 구체적인 자리에서 한 번 더 자리하고 있었다.

수요일 알림장은 7시 37분쯤 들어왔다. 봄 나물 중 쑥을 탐색해보는 시간을 가져보았다는 첫 줄에 이어, 산책 시 보았던 것을 교실에서 보니 ‘후후~’라고 말하며 민들레 홀씨인 줄 알고 열심히 불어보는 모습이라는 다음 줄에서 짧게 웃었다. 두 주 전 민들레 홀씨를 ‘호호~’ 불었던 그 자리가, 이번 주는 쑥 앞에서 한 박자 다르게 한 번 더 적혀 있었다.
쑥의 냄새를 맡아보고 어떤 냄새인지 어떤 색인지 언어로 표현해 보았다는 다음 줄, 그리고 ‘음~’이라고 말을 하며 따라 말하려는 모습이 많이 보이는 요즘이라는 다음 줄에서, ‘음~’이라는 한 글자가 따옴표 안에 들어와 있었다. 한 칸 더 작은 소리도 한 줄로 자리하는 자리였다.

이 날은 어제 알림장에서 안내된 ‘부모님과 함께 놀이하는 삼짇날’ 행사가 있는 날이었다. 알림장은 따로 들어오지 않았다. 부모가 어린이집에 직접 가서 작은 어깨와 함께 한 칸씩 활동을 한 자리였다.
수요일 클레이 화전 만들기에서 미리 연습한 그 동작이, 금요일 부모 옆자리에서 한 번 더 자리하는 시간이었다. 화전이라는 한국적인 단어가 알림장 한 줄을 떠나 같은 시각에 부모 손과 작은 손이 같이 누르는 자리로 옮겨와 있었다.

The third week of April 2026 began. On the last page of the previous week I had wished that “aemi~” and “abi~” — those two-syllable insect names missing a consonant — would step one notch closer into the precise “umma” and “appa.” This Thursday’s note answered that line exactly. “Looking at our family photo with a bright, clear face, she said ‘umma~ appa~’ and smiled with happiness — it was a happy time for me too.” Where last week’s insect-name syllables, missing one consonant each, had walked inside quotation marks, this week the names of the two people closest to her had moved one notch more precise, two clear syllables each, sitting inside the same line. I read that line twice on the commuter bus. Inside the same week, a slot for color matching, a slot for using tongs to move things, a slot for shaping clay into a circle by imitation, a slot for smelling spring mugwort, and a slot for trying a two-footed frog-jump all walked in, one after another. On Tuesday, one-to-one color matching. On Wednesday, tools and imitation. On Thursday, calling family by their actual names. Inside one week, classification, tools, and expression had all grown one notch at a time, together. Lying down beside her, the line “umma~ appa~” — two close people called twice inside one line — became one notch clearer again.
Monday (4/20) – Paper-cup birthday and peekaboo
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Monday. The note arrived around 6:32 AM. The first line said today they had played with paper cups with flowers on them. The line after said they had talked about yellow, red, pink, and other various colors, the beauty of the flowers, then explored that the flower drawings were different and expressed the names in language. “Yellow, red, pink” — three color names sat inside one line. Last week’s “yellow~” had grown into three colors across one line this week.
The next line said she had pulled stacked cups apart with her fingers (a fine-motor activity) and laid the cups out long like a train, saying “chug-chug~.” The line after said she had stacked many cups, again and again, clapping joyfully, so the teacher had sung “WooRin~ happy birthday~” and a birthday song — and she had swayed her body, singing along, and played at blowing out a candle with “hoo~.” “Hoo~” sat in quotation marks again. Two weeks ago like a wolf, last week onto a dandelion seed; this week, onto a birthday candle. The same single syllable had walked across three different places in one month.
The next line said she had played peekaboo with a scarf, and when a song came on, said “Butterfly~” and sang the Butterfly song together. “Peekaboo~” and “Butterfly~” sat inside quotation marks, in turn. The line after said that whenever a friend passed by mid-play, she had covered the friend’s face and said “peekaboo~,” laughing together. I paused on “covered the friend’s face.” Five months ago, the same little shoulders had been wearing the cloth on her own head; this week, that same hand had moved one notch over — covering someone else’s face.
The last line said the weather looked like rain was coming soon, so the walk had been short, and back in the classroom she had talked about the birds and the wind they had met outside while tidying her socks. “Tidying her socks” was back, one week later. Last week’s “taking off and tidying socks on her own” had now moved one notch over — into a more natural part of the day.
Tuesday (4/21) – Dot paints and tongs
Tuesday’s note arrived around 8:25 AM. The first line said today they had decorated caterpillars. The next line said they had talked again about the caterpillars they had met before, then looked at the colorful dot paints and talked about which colors they were. “Dot paints” — new in the notes. The line after said she had expressed the colors verbally and tried following the shape of the teacher’s mouth. “Following the shape of the mouth” appeared again. The same phrase from a month ago had now taken its place again, this time on a one-notch-more-specific spot — color names.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “We played at moving honey to pretty flowers. When I said, ‘where is yellow?’ and lifted a yellow piece, WooRin looked around for yellow too, then grabbed whatever and placed it on the flower. One-to-one matching is still a bit weak, but we will keep working on it through play with the Dasol-ban friends.” “One-to-one matching” — five characters new in the notes. A small slot for matching one color to one matching color appeared inside a daycare line for the first time.
The next line said at first she had picked things up with her fingers (fine-motor), and then they had moved on to picking things up with tongs. “Tongs” — new in the notes. A month ago, “tidying her own bag” had been the line; this week, that same hand had moved one notch further — into a more precise tool. The line after said her fine-motor strength was still developing, so they had slipped, but when she finally caught one and clipped it, she had been delighted — “got it!” sat alongside.
Wednesday (4/22) – Spring mugwort and a clay “hwajeon” cake
Wednesday’s note arrived around 7:37 AM. The first line said today they had explored mugwort, one of the spring herbs. The line after said when she saw inside the classroom what she had seen on walks, she had said “hoo-hoo~” and tried to blow on it, thinking it was a dandelion seed — I smiled. Two weeks ago, the dandelion seed had been blown “ho-ho~”; this week, the same beat had appeared in front of mugwort, with a different little rhythm.
The next line said they had smelled the mugwort, talked about its smell, its color, expressing it in language. The line after said she had said “mm~,” recently showing a lot of “trying to follow along” with words. “Mm~” sat inside quotation marks. Even a smaller little sound was now taking its place inside a daycare line.
The next line said when she had seen the clay, she had touched it cautiously, then watching the teacher say “like this~ knead-knead~,” she had gathered courage and kneaded it, pressed it with her fingers, stretched it long — exploring in many ways. “Knead-knead~” sat inside quotation marks. The line after said when the teacher had shaped it into a circle, she had imitated, bringing her hands together to try making a circle too. “Bringing her hands together to make a circle” — new in the notes. A motion of two hands coming together had taken its place inside a single line.
The next line said they had also put the mugwort on top and pressed it, making “hwajeon” — a traditional Korean Samjinnal flower pancake. “Samjinnal” and “hwajeon” — two distinctly Korean words new in the notes.
The last lines said they had also done body-expression play, saying “kaegul~ kaegul~” to express the spring frog. With a frog headband on, she had made frog sounds, tried to jump like a frog (without much success), walked across lily-pad stepping stones, balanced, and tried two-footed jumps saying “jump~.” “Kaegul~ kaegul~” sat inside quotation marks. Last week, “two-footed jumping” had first appeared; this week, the same jump had taken its place again with a one-notch-more-specific motivation — imitating a frog.
Thursday (4/23) – “Umma~ appa~”
Thursday’s note arrived around 6:33 AM. The first line said today they had thought of their beloved families and stuck pretty flowers on top of family photos.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “Looking at our family photo with a bright, clear face, WooRin said ‘umma~ appa~’ and smiled with happiness — it was a happy time for me too.” “Umma~ appa~” sat inside quotation marks. The slot for calling two people in two-syllable names had appeared inside a daycare line, for the first time, with precise syllables. This week, the names of the two people closest to her had walked in together, two precise syllables each, inside one line. I read that line twice on the commuter bus.
The next line said she had stuck flowers on top of the family photo and talked about what colors they were. The line after said “pink, yellow, and white flowers bloomed wide open on top of our family photo.” A month ago, the same hand had been pointing at the family photo. This week, that same hand had moved one notch further — placing flowers on it, one notch at a time.
The next line said after a really long time, the fine-dust haze had finally lifted, so they had gone outdoors with excitement. “Fine-dust haze” — new in the notes. The line after said as they had started walking, they had met a garbage truck and sat down to watch how the garbage was being picked up. “A garbage truck that tidies things up” — new in the notes.
The next line said when the crane’s claw came out, she had said “wow~” and clapped, watching the crocodile-like jaws scoop up the trash; together they had even cheered “do well~ cheer up~” while having a great time. “Do well~ cheer up~” sat inside quotation marks. A cheer aimed not at an animal or a thing, but at a working person, walked into a daycare note for the first time. The last line said pretty azaleas had bloomed, and they had explored white, pink, and purple azaleas, feeling their beauty. “White, pink, purple” — three color names sat in a line again.
Friday (4/24) – Parents’ Samjinnal play, no note
This was the day of the “Samjinnal play with parents” event announced in yesterday’s note. There was no daycare note. The parents went to the daycare directly and did activities one slot at a time, side by side with the small shoulders.
The motion practiced in advance during Wednesday’s clay-hwajeon making now took its place again beside a parent’s hand on Friday. The word “hwajeon” — a small Korean word — had stepped out of one daycare line and into a slot where parent’s hand and small hand pressed together at the same time.
An hour briefly stolen from work over lunch took its place inside that weekday. Inside that hour, the small shoulders held a parent’s hand once more and took a slot beside other children.
That evening I came home and emptied her bag. A lunchbox, a sleep blanket, a rabbit doll, and one or two more tiny scuff marks on the toe of her sneakers. The medicine pouch corner in the living room stayed empty for another week. On top of the family photo, a single flower brought home by a small hand had taken a new spot.
