The third week of March 2026 began. On the last page of the previous week I had wished that the lotion would step one more notch — from the back of her hand to the palm — and that a new sleep blanket would settle into the bag just right. This week, lotion did not appear in a daycare line, but in its place a larger answer walked in. Monday’s note carried a final line: “During her very first nap time, she lay down on her own in a calm atmosphere, didn’t struggle, and fell asleep peacefully.” A sleep slot finally taking its place inside this new classroom had walked into the page, after two adjustment weeks. The new sleep blanket fitting just right was now written as one quiet line. Inside the same week, another notch walked in. Thursday’s note said the teacher had held two balloons up to her head and said “Tokki-ya~” (bunny), and the small mouth had answered with “San~ tokki~ tokki~” — the opening of the song “Mountain Bunny.” The same song that had first arrived in quotation marks a month earlier was now coming directly out of her own mouth, one beat at a time. A line that had moved from being heard into being sung. Lying down beside her, it became clear once more — a first nap and a first song had walked inside the same single week.
Monday (3/16) – The first nap that came calmly
Around 12:33 AM on Monday, her mother left a long note in the parent message box for the new teacher. Saturday at the cultural center, learning with a fire truck. The trip to the hair salon to trim her bangs — moving around and frightened, so it had been a quick rush. Sunday with our upstairs neighbors and their older kids over for chicken — WooRin not eating any but happily coloring on a Baby Shark coloring sheet. Lately she had been sleeping with one pacifier in her mouth and another in her two hands, so during the adjustment, please accept the two pacifiers for stability’s sake. A small note in which the unit of comfort was now written as two small objects in two small hands.
The teacher’s note arrived around 6:04 AM. The first line said they had started with a piano-pressing activity along to music. Two weeks ago a crayon on a family photo, last week “annyeong~” into a mirror — and this week, a piano had taken that same small spot, one notch over.
The next line said they had then done a fine-motor push-pop activity. “The teacher slowly said ‘1, 2, 3!’ and pressed; WooRin showed interest, pressed with her fingers, and let out an ‘ae!’ as she joined in.” “1, 2, 3!” and “ae!” sat in turn inside one line, each in quotation marks. The teacher counting and the child’s matching sound were arriving as two beats inside one line. The line said her pressing each one with the strength in her small fingers and enjoying the repetitive movement had been impressive. “Adjusting her strength” appeared again, a month after it had first walked into the notes.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “During her very first nap time, she lay down on her own in a calm atmosphere, didn’t struggle, and fell asleep peacefully. After resting well, she got up in a good mood and continued the day brightly.” I paused on “very first nap.” A nap slot taking its place inside the new classroom was a first. The biggest small slot that had been stepped aside from during two adjustment weeks had now, on the first weekday of the third week, settled inside a single line.
The last line said she had napped at 2 and woken at 2:40. A nap, in unit of time, written for the first time inside this new classroom.
Tuesday (3/17) – A weekday with no note
This was a day without a daycare note. A weekday slot taking its place inside our home had walked in again. In the living room, her small mouth received a small dose of cold medicine once, and beside the sound book she dozed off and woke for about an hour. A small “resting in between” slot quietly took its place in that weekday.
Wednesday (3/18) – A ball on sticky tape
Around 12:35 AM Wednesday, her mother left a short note. That because of her runny nose, the medicine had been put in the front of the bag. And: “When we say, ‘kkolkkak kkolkkak meokja~’ (let’s gulp it down), she opens her mouth and goes ‘aaa~,’ taking the medicine well.” “Kkolkkak kkolkkak meokja~” inside quotation marks was a new small line in the parent message. A small little ritual had taken its place inside the act of taking medicine.
The teacher’s note arrived around 9:01 AM. The first line said today she had played in various ways with balls. She had looked at the colorful balls and explored them visually, and through the teacher’s language her experience of color had expanded. The next line said in rolling and catching the ball, she had used her gross motor skills by moving her body, actively chasing the ball on her own. “Gross motor” appeared for the first time in the new teacher’s notes.
The next line said they had played with tape, where she had touched and pressed it to feel the sticky texture. I paused on “sticky texture.” The line after said as she put the ball onto the tape and then pulled it off, she had adjusted the strength in her hand and used her fine-motor skills, feeling a sense of accomplishment from the repetition. “The process of putting on and pulling off” appeared in a note for the first time. Last week, the same hand had been pulling tape off the floor, one piece at a time. This week, that same hand had moved one notch deeper in — pressing the ball onto the tape and pulling it off again, in two beats.
At the end, the note said she had napped for 40 minutes. The sleep slot that had been stepped aside from before was now written as a time-unit, one more time.
Thursday (3/19) – Two-footed jumps and “San~ tokki~ tokki~”
Thursday’s note arrived around 6:31 AM. The first line said: “When she carried a ball over and got it into a balloon ring for a goal, she was so happy that she jumped with both feet together, expressing it with her body.” “Jumping with both feet together” — new in the notes. Five months ago, “walking steadily all day” had been the line; this week, both feet had stepped one notch up, leaving the floor at once. The line carried “sense of accomplishment” and “self-confidence” together.
The next line said she had played with a friend, putting a balloon stick in and out, looking at each other and laughing, and that one could feel positive peer relationships forming. “Forming positive peer relationships” was a new phrase in the notes. Inside the new classroom, the word “friend” had now been arranged into the formal noun “peer,” one notch over.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “When the teacher held two balloons up to her head and said ‘Tokki-ya~’ (bunny), WooRin said ‘San~ tokki~ tokki~’ and sang the Mountain Bunny song — how lovely that had been.” “San~ tokki~ tokki~” — three small beats sat inside quotation marks. The same Mountain Bunny song that had first walked inside quotation marks a month ago was, this week, now coming directly out of her own mouth, one beat at a time. A line that had moved from listening to singing.
I read that line twice on the commuter bus. In a single month, the same song had taken its place inside two different slots inside the notes.
Friday (3/20) – A block table and “yum-yum”
Friday’s note arrived around 6:31 AM. The first line said today she had experienced exploration and expression through a block-table activity. “Table” — new in the notes. The motion of stacking blocks up by one notch had now moved into long sideways connections, one beat over.
The next line said she had stacked blocks with the teacher and watched the shape change, then connected them lengthwise to complete a table. I paused on “connected them lengthwise.” Two months ago, dominoes had been falling in this same kind of spot; this week, the same beat had moved into pieces linking sideways, one beat at a time. The next line said when scarves were used to decorate the table, she had shown interest in the visual change and joined happily. “Visual change” — a new phrase.
The next line said in the food-play activity, she had placed various food models in bowls and used a spoon to express eating. The line after said she had stayed absorbed in the play, choosing the food she wanted to eat herself, and made “yum-yum” sounds. “Yum-yum” sat in quotation marks again. Last week, the same “yum-yum” had been the sound coming from her hand while feeding a baby doll. This week, the same sound now came directly out of her own mouth, one notch deeper in.
The last line said she had experienced offering food to a friend, taking one step forward in forming peer relationships. “Taking one step forward” — a phrase that followed quietly. Last week, she had been beside a friend, exchanging greetings. This week, the same hand had now moved one notch in — offering food. A 40-minute nap, again, sat in the last line.
After work I came home and emptied her bag. A lunchbox, a sleep blanket, two pacifiers, a gauze handkerchief, and one or two more tiny scuff marks on the toe of her sneakers. Inside the new bag, two new items that had never been there in last year’s bag were now taking their places. The medicine pouch corner in the living room held another new packet.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where a first nap and a first sung song walked inside the same seven days. On Monday, “1, 2, 3!” and “ae!” sat in turn on top of a push-pop, followed by the line “during her very first nap time, she fell asleep calmly.” On Wednesday, “kkolkkak kkolkkak meokja~” — a small ritual of receiving medicine — appeared in the parent message for the first time. On Thursday, a ball going into a balloon ring lifted both her feet at once for one small instant, and “San~ tokki~ tokki~” walked into quotation marks. On Friday, “yum-yum” came again from her own small mouth, and she stepped one foot closer to a friend, offering food.
Of the two wishes from last week, the new sleep blanket settled into the bag just right. On top of that, a larger answer — “the first nap” — sat as a line. Lying down beside her, I wished, quietly again, that next week the first nap time would grow one notch longer, and that one more song after “Mountain Bunny” might walk inside quotation marks, out of that small mouth.
