금요일 알림장은 7시 46분쯤 들어왔다. 짧은 두 줄이었다. ‘주말도 한파로 춥다고 하네요. 건강 조심하시고 우리 하린이도 빨리 회복되고 건강해지길 바래봅니다’라는 한 줄, 그리고 ‘약은 3시 20분에 먹였습니다’라는 짧은 한 줄. ‘빨리 회복되고 건강해지길’이라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 한 달 전 ‘거뜬히 이겨내리라 믿습니다’와 같은 자리에, 이번 주는 어른들에게 향한 부드러운 한 줄이 적혀 있었다.
퇴근하고 집에 돌아가 가방 안을 비웠다. 도시락통 하나, 그리고 신발 끝에 묻은 작은 자국. 거실 한쪽 약 봉투 자리에 한 봉투가 또 다시 한 개 자리해 있었다. 한 주 사이에 한 칸이 다시 채워졌다는 뜻이었다.

On the last page of the previous week I had wished that the syllables “umma” might come clearly from her small mouth once, and that the small Tuesday medicine packet would empty out of its spot in the living room. This week, each of those two wishes was answered only by one small step. Tuesday’s note carried a line: “The dimmer look from earlier is gone, and she’s playing happily again — so good to see.” Where last week’s “she seemed to be empathizing with her mother’s pain” had sat, this week the same word “dimmer” had moved in the opposite direction, with “is gone” and “again.” On the same Tuesday, three words sat inside one daycare line, in quotation marks: “crocodile,” “hippo,” and “quack-quack.” The two syllables “umma” did not yet come out clearly from her mouth, but the number of words coming out of that small mouth had grown by one more notch. Still, Thursday became a no-note weekday, and Friday’s last line read again: “Gave her medicine at 3:20 PM.” In the second half of the week, those small shoulders had quietly shifted into a different rhythm. Lying down beside her, I traced the week one more time — recovery and a small wobble, written down one after the other inside the same seven days.
Monday (1/19) – A hand that tears colored paper
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Monday. The note arrived around 7:40. The first line said she had freely doodled on a snowman drawing with color pencils, expressing herself. “Snowman” — new in the notes. A month ago, the same activity slot had carried “a snowy day” painted with white dabs. This week, the figure of a snowman had stepped into that place.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “She also showed interest in tearing colored paper with her hands, then tore the paper with the teacher and pasted it down with glue.” “Tearing it with her hands” — a new phrase in the notes. A month ago, the same hand had been pressing star stickers down firmly, pressing clay firmly. This week, the same hand had moved one step further — tearing colored paper. The motion had shifted from pressing into tearing, all written into a single line.
The next line said she had experienced the textures of the glue and the colored paper, joining the activity calmly. “Calmly” appeared again — the same adverb carrying over from the first week of the year. The last line said she had spent a happy art-play time, trying one piece at a time. “Trying one piece at a time” — a small phrase that followed quietly.
Tuesday (1/20) – “Crocodile,” “hippo,” “quack-quack”
Tuesday’s note arrived around 7:39. The first line said: “The dimmer look from earlier is gone, and it was so good to see her playing happily again.” I paused on “the dimmer look.” Last week’s “a little dimmer” had appeared in this same kind of spot. This week, the same word had been written in the opposite direction, with two verbs: “is gone” and “again.” Inside a single week, the same word had landed in two opposite directions.
The next line said she had offered toys to a friend, and when she needed something herself, she had gestured to ask for it — naturally interacting through play. I paused on “gestured to ask for it.” A “giving hand” and a “receiving hand” had first sat inside one line a couple of months ago during an autumn walk. This week, that same spot now carried “gesturing to ask for it” — one notch more specific.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “During the storybook reading, she pointed at the pictures and tried saying words: ‘crocodile,’ ‘hippo,’ ‘quack-quack.'” Three words sat in one line, each inside its own quotation marks. Two weeks ago, “sheep” had appeared as a single syllable, twice inside one line. This week, three words sat side by side. The onomatopoeic “quack-quack” appeared in a daycare note for the first time. Following animal names, an animal sound had now arrived in its own small beat from her mouth.
The last line said she had finished another lively, joyful day. “Lively” was back in the notes one more time. The bottom of Tuesday’s note carried no medicine time.
Wednesday (1/21) – A toilet-paper tube and stickers
Wednesday’s note arrived around 7:39. The first line said she had played a sticker activity on a toilet-paper tube. “Toilet-paper tube” — new in the notes.
The next line said the way she had peeled off the stickers one by one, focused, had been adorable. I paused on “peeled off one by one.” Two months ago, the same hand had been pressing star stickers down firmly. This week, the same hand had moved into the opposite beat — peeling them off, one at a time. The same motion, written in two directions, one each.
The next line said she had eaten lunch well and even pooped well, spending the whole day smiling happily. “Pooped well too” — a small everyday phrase that had not really shown up in the notes before, now sitting quietly inside one line. The last line said she had joined the play with a bright expression all day.
Thursday (1/22) – A weekday with no note
This was a no-note weekday at daycare. In the empty weekday slot, those small shoulders again sat quietly somewhere off the page. I made a warm cup of tea in the living room, turned on the sound book one more time beside it, and watched that small loop spend about an hour in our living room.
Friday (1/23) – One more medicine line
Friday’s note arrived around 7:46. Two short lines. “The weekend is going to be cold with a cold snap. Please take care of your health, and we hope WooRin will recover and grow strong again soon.” And: “Gave her medicine at 3:20 PM.” I paused on “recover and grow strong again soon.” A month ago, “I trust she will get through this cold easily” had sat in this same kind of spot. This week, the line had softened one more notch into a quiet wish pointed gently toward the grown-ups.
After work I came home and emptied her bag. A lunchbox, and one or two more tiny scuff marks on the toe of her sneakers. The medicine pouch slot in the corner of the living room held another packet again. The single notch had refilled itself one more time over the week.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where recovery and a quiet wobble arrived in turn inside the same seven days. On Monday, “tearing with her hands” entered the notes as a new phrase. On Tuesday, “the dimmer look from earlier is gone” and “crocodile, hippo, quack-quack” sat inside the same week. On Wednesday, an everyday phrase — “pooped well too” — quietly walked into a line. Thursday was a no-note weekday. On Friday, “we hope she’ll recover and grow strong again soon” closed the page, with a medicine time at the very bottom.
Of the two wishes from last week, both were answered by only one small step each. Lying down beside her, I wished, quietly again, that next week the line about recovery would grow one notch clearer, and that all five animal names might appear together inside a single line out of that small mouth.
