월요일은 새벽 0시 24분쯤 부모 메시지 칸에 길게 한 줄을 남겼다. 가정학습 기간 동안 다행히 감기 없이 건강했다는 줄, 피부가 좀 건조해 다리와 왼쪽 눈가에 붉은 자국이 살짝 올라와 낮잠 전 로션을 한 번 더 발라달라는 줄, 외출이 잦아져 낮잠을 안 자려 한다는 줄, ‘까까 까까’ 하며 간식을 찾는다는 줄, 아기상어 노래와 율동을 따라 하고 사운드북 노래를 자주 튼다는 줄, 다리 사이에 물건을 숨기고 ‘어디갓지’ 하면 ‘여기잇다’ 외치며 즐거워한다는 줄, 단어 몇 개를 따라하기 시작했고 타조와 악어 같은 동물 이름도 알고 말한다는 줄. 한 해의 끝과 새해의 시작 사이에 작은 어깨가 자라온 한 칸 한 칸을, 한 줄씩 적어 보냈다.

가장 길게 멈췄던 줄은 그 다음이었다. ‘양 인형에 관심을 보여 ‘양’이라고 알려주었더니, 인형을 꼭 가지고 다니며 ‘양’이라고 여러 번 말해 보네요’라는 한 줄이었다. ‘양’이라는 한 글자가 따옴표 안에 두 번 들어와 있었다. 알림장에서 동물 이름이 한 글자로 따옴표 안에 들어온 게 처음이었다. 두 달 전 사자와 기린을 손가락으로 가리키던 그 손이, 이번 주는 같은 동물 이름을 작은 입으로 한 글자씩 따라하는 자리로 한 칸 더 들어가 있었다.

선생님이 도미노 장난감을 세우는 모습을 보더니 흥미를 느끼고 집중해서 하나씩 세워보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘도미노 장난감’이라는 다섯 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 손에서 시작된 동작이 한 줄로 이어지는 도구가 알림장에 처음 적힌 줄이었다.

퇴근하고 집에 돌아가 가방 안을 비웠다. 도시락통 하나, 그리고 신발 끝에 묻은 작은 자국. 거실 한쪽 약 봉투 자리는 한 주 더 비어 있었다. 한 주의 마지막 평일을 그렇게 한 칸씩 정리하면서, 한 해의 첫 주가 이렇게 자리하기 시작했다는 게 또 한 번 또렷해졌다.
한 주를 마치며

The first week of 2026 began. On the last page of last year’s diary I had written that I would try to imagine what word might appear in the very first line of the new year’s first daycare note. This week, that first line opened with a familiar greeting and then quietly stepped, one notch at a time, into five animal names that had never appeared in the notes before. Sheep, lion, hippo, and — inside my own early-morning message — ostrich and crocodile. This was the week animal names began coming out of a small mouth. On Sunday night, looking through the sound book in our living room one more time, I quietly tried to picture how the small shoulders that had grown so much during the home-care break might appear on Monday morning, as the daycare bag went on her back again.
Monday (1/5) – Coming back after a long break
Around 12:24 AM on Monday I left a long note in the parent message box. That through the home-care break, thankfully, she had stayed healthy without a cold. That her skin had gotten a bit dry — small red marks like mild atopic patches on her legs and the left edge of her eye — so could the teacher please put on a little extra lotion before nap time. That with more outings, she had been refusing naps. That she had been calling out for snacks, “kkakka, kkakka.” That she had picked up the Baby Shark song and dance, and kept turning on the sound book to play music. That if she hid something between her thighs, and we said “Where did it go?” she would shout “Here it is!” with delight. That she had begun copying a few words, and that she now knew and said animal names like ostrich and crocodile. A long list of small lines about how those small shoulders had grown between one year and the next.
The note arrived around 7:42. The first line said WooRin had come in to daycare for the first time in a while after the home-care break, and that when she saw the teacher she had expressed her happiness with a bright smile. “First time in a while” took its place as the very first line of the new year. The fact that a single line was beginning to settle back into a slot that had been empty for nearly two weeks read clearly on the commuter bus.
The next line said she had not looked unfamiliar at all and had shown interest in the toys, playing happily. I paused on “not unfamiliar at all.” Two weeks ago, in front of “Santa-grandpa,” the line had been “looked a little unfamiliar for a moment.” A year-line later, that same phrase had moved into “not unfamiliar at all.” The line after said in a calm atmosphere she had played calmly and finished the day well, making the teacher’s day brighter too. “Calmly” appeared again — the same adverb carrying over from the end of last year. The first note of the new year settled in, quietly, like that.
Tuesday (1/6) – A single syllable: “sheep”
Tuesday’s note arrived around 7:15. The first line said she had shown interest in a color board, turning it over and over to explore. Two months ago, her hand had been slipping balls into empty slots; this week, the same hand had moved into turning a color board, one side at a time.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “When she showed interest in a sheep figurine and we told her, ‘sheep,’ she carried it around and said ‘sheep’ several times.” The single character for “sheep” sat inside quotation marks, twice. An animal name appearing as a single syllable inside quotation marks was new in the notes. Two months ago, her finger had pointed at a lion and a giraffe; this week, the same animal names were beginning to come out of her small mouth, one syllable at a time.
The next line said her trying to repeat and express words on her own had been wonderful. “Trying to repeat words on her own” was new in the notes. The last line said her words were noticeably growing day by day. “Words growing noticeably” sat just one small spot over from the “feels different every day” line I had written in the early-morning message.
Wednesday (1/7) – “Lion” and “hippo,” and a New Year’s greeting
Wednesday started with another short message in the parent box, around 4:05 AM. A short New Year’s greeting. May you leap forward with strength, like a horse. May your days be filled with passion that does not cool. May every wish you have lead to a year of fulfillment. May the steps that never stop find, at their end, a wider road and a greater joy. I closed with “Happy New Year.” A line for someone who had quietly watched over those small shoulders, every day, throughout a whole year.
The teacher’s note arrived around 7:33. The first line said WooRin’s language had been growing rapidly lately, and today she had again stood out for how she tried to express herself with words. “Language growing rapidly” — a new phrase in the notes.
The next line said she had clearly pronounced animal names like “lion” and “hippo,” joining the activity happily. “Lion” and “hippo” both sat inside their own quotation marks. Yesterday, “sheep” had appeared twice in one line. Today, two animal names sat inside one line, one after the other. I paused on “clearly pronounced.” Yesterday’s “tried to repeat” had now moved one notch into “clearly pronounced.”
The next line said in a matching-glove activity, she had compared gloves with the teacher and looked for matching pairs. I paused on “finding the matching pair.” Two months ago, her hand had been finding empty slots; this week, the same hand had moved one step further in, finding matching pairs. The line after said her focus on examining each one and finding the right match had been wonderful. “Finding the right match” — a new phrase in the notes. The last line said today both her language and her cognitive development had been growing together inside her play. “Language and cognition” had walked into the same line.
Thursday (1/8) – Dominoes and waving hi to a friend
Thursday’s note arrived around 7:26. The first line said she had come in cheerfully and waved to a friend first, in greeting. “Waved first, in greeting” — new in the notes. A month ago, the same hand had been moving closer beside a friend. This week, the same hand had risen one more notch — into a wave.
The next line said when she watched the teacher set up domino blocks, she had grown interested and focused, standing them up one by one. “Domino blocks” — new in the notes. A tool that turned a motion of her own hand into a chain of falling beats had appeared in a note for the first time.
The next line said watching the dominoes tumble, she had laughed and enjoyed it. I paused on “watching the dominoes tumble.” A single beat of cause and effect had been noticed by those small shoulders — written into a line for the first time. The last line said she had also eaten lunch evenly and finished the day in a good mood, quietly closing the day.
Friday (1/9) – A laughter-filled first week of the new year
Friday’s note arrived around 7:37. One line said the first week of the new year had been full of WooRin’s laughter. Another said they would keep doing their best to spend healthy, fun days with her. Another wished us a happy weekend. Three lines. The usual last-line items — a towel, a medicine time — were empty this week.
After work I came home and emptied her bag. A lunchbox, and one or two more tiny scuff marks on the toe of her sneakers. The medicine pouch slot in the corner of the living room stayed empty one more week. As I tidied the last weekday of the week one piece at a time, it became clear once more that the first week of the new year had quietly settled into its place.
Wrapping up the week
This was the week animal names began coming out of her small mouth. On Monday, “first time in a while” walked into the first line of the new year. On Tuesday, the syllable “sheep” appeared twice inside quotation marks. On Wednesday, “lion” and “hippo” each took their own quotation marks inside the same line. On Thursday, “waved first, in greeting” and “watching the dominoes tumble” sat inside the same set of lines. On Friday, the week closed with three short lines. The phrase “language growing rapidly” took one clear, quiet spot in the week.
What I had wondered at the end of last year — “what word might appear in the first line of the new year’s first note” — was answered by the five animal names that filled this week. Lying down beside her, I wished, quietly, that next week one or two more animals would join those five, and that “appa” or “umma” might come more clearly out of that small mouth one more time.
