월요일 출근버스 정류장에 7시 10분쯤 도착했다. 알림장은 7시 42분쯤 들어왔다. 첫 줄에서 ‘짤랑짤랑’ 동요에 맞춰 율동하며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다는 한 줄을 봤다. ‘짤랑짤랑’이라는 네 글자가 따옴표 안에 들어와 있었다. 한 주 전 ‘딩동’에 이어, 이번 주는 그 자리에 ‘짤랑짤랑’이 한 칸 옆에 자리하고 있었다.
음악이 들리면 한 번씩 몸을 움직이며 풍선을 흔들어보고 딸랑이도 흔들면서 리듬에 맞춰 몸을 들썩이는 모습이 사랑스러웠다는 다음 줄에서, ‘리듬에 맞춰 몸을 들썩이는’이라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 한 주 전 손목 딸랑이를 벗어버린 그 손이, 이번 주는 다시 딸랑이를 한 손에 쥐고 흔드는 자리로 옮겨와 있었다. 같은 도구가 한 주 사이에 두 자리에서 다른 박자로 적혀 있었다.

화요일 알림장은 7시 31분쯤 들어왔다. 첫 줄에 ‘성탄 케이크 만들기 활동에 참여했다’는 한 줄이 들어왔다. ‘성탄 케이크 만들기’라는 일곱 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 두 달 전 송편 만들기로 시작된 요리 활동의 흐름이, 이번 주는 케이크로 한 칸 옮겨와 있었다.
선생님과 함께 생크림을 짜보고 케이크 위에 장식도 하나씩 꽂아보며 완성해 보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘생크림’이라는 세 글자에 잠시 멈췄다. 알림장에 처음 등장한 단어였다. 두 달 전 송편 반죽을 집어던졌던 그 손이, 이번 주는 생크림을 짜고 장식을 꽂는 두 박자 손으로 한 칸 더 자리하고 있었다.
처음 접하는 활동이라 잠시 망설이는 모습도 있었지만 선생님의 따뜻한 격려에 용기를 내어 끝까지 참여했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘용기를 내어 끝까지 참여했다’는 표현에 한참 멈췄다. 한 달 전 촉감판 위에서 ‘엉덩이를 쏙 빼며 망설였다’가 ‘용기 있게 시도’로 한 칸 옮겨갔던 그 흐름이, 이번 주는 ‘끝까지 참여’라는 한 칸 더 끝에 자리하고 있었다. 새로운 경험 앞에서도 차분히 도전하며 성취감을 느끼는 모습이 기특했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘성취감’이라는 세 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다.

수요일 (12/24) – 산타할아버지와 펭귄과 낚시
수요일 알림장은 7시 54분쯤 들어왔다. 사진이 47장 첨부돼 있었다. 평소의 두 배 가까운 사진 수였다. 첫 줄에 ‘산타할아버지에게 선물을 받으며 크리스마스 분위기를 느꼈다’는 한 줄을 봤다. ‘산타할아버지’라는 다섯 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 원장님께서 산타로 변신하셨지만 처음 접하는 성탄 분위기에 잠시 낯설어하는 모습도 보였다는 다음 줄에서, ‘잠시 낯설어하는’이라는 표현에 짧게 웃었다. 어른들의 작은 변장이 작은 어깨에 한 칸 다르게 들어왔다는 게, 한 줄 안에서 또렷하게 적혀 있었다.
오감 선생님과 함께 펭귄이 되어 눈놀이를 해보고 실로폰을 두드리며 소리를 탐색하고 낚시 놀이에도 즐겁게 참여했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘펭귄’과 ‘실로폰’과 ‘낚시’가 한 줄 안에 세 단어로 차례로 들어와 있었다. 평소 알림장 한 줄 안에 한두 단어가 새로 들어오는 박자였는데, 이번 줄은 한 칸 더 두툼한 박자였다. 크리스마스 이브 하루 안에 새 단어가 한꺼번에 세 개 들어와 있었다.
활동 하나하나에 호기심을 보이며 적극적으로 참여하는 모습에서 한층 더 자란 모습을 느낄 수 있었다는 다음 줄에서, ‘한층 더 자란 모습’이라는 표현이 또 한 번 등장했다. 두 달 전 가족 여행에서 돌아온 첫 주 첫 줄에 자리하던 그 표현이, 이번 주에 또 한 번 같은 자리에 적혀 있었다. 두 달 사이에 같은 표현이 한 주 사이를 두고 두 번 등장했다는 게, 한 칸 다른 의미로 읽혔다.
마지막에 ‘12월 25일부터 1월 2일까지는 가정학습기간입니다. 새해 복 많이 받으세요’라는 안내가 한 줄 따라왔다. 알림장 마지막 줄 자리에 약 시간 대신 가정학습 안내가 들어와 있었다. 한 해의 마지막 알림장이 그렇게 자리했다.
목요일 ~ 금요일 (12/25~12/26) – 가정학습 기간 시작
이 두 평일은 어린이집이 닫힌 날들이었다. 목요일은 크리스마스 당일이었고, 금요일은 그 다음 평일이 가정학습 기간 안에 들어가 있었다.
크리스마스 날 거실에서 작은 트리 옆에 그제 어린이집에서 받아온 산타할아버지의 작은 선물 봉투를 한 번 더 꺼냈다. 어린이집에서 한 번 받은 그 봉투를 집에서 한 번 더 풀어보는 한 칸이 한 시간쯤 거실에 머물렀다.
부모님 댁에는 토요일 저녁에 잠깐 들렀다. 거실 한구석에서 설이와 우리가 천천히 한 번씩 다가왔다 멀어졌다 했다. 크리스마스 한 주에 부모님 댁 거실을 잠시 다녀온 게, 평일에 자리하지 못한 두 칸의 다른 자리에서 한 줄로 적혔다.
한 주를 마치며
이번 주는 알림장 마지막 줄에 약 시간이 한 번도 적히지 않은 한 주였다. 월요일에는 ‘짤랑짤랑’이라는 의성어가 따옴표 안에 들어왔고, 화요일에는 ‘성탄 케이크 만들기’와 ‘용기를 내어 끝까지 참여’가 같은 줄 안에 차례로 적혔고, 수요일에는 ‘산타할아버지’와 ‘펭귄’과 ‘실로폰’과 ‘낚시’라는 네 단어가 한 줄 안에 함께 들어왔다. 평일 다섯 칸 중 세 칸이 알림장이었고, 나머지 두 칸은 가정학습 기간 첫 자리였다.

The fourth week of December began. On the last page of the previous week, I had wished that each medicine slot at the bottom of the notes would sit empty, and that a small wrapped Santa gift would gently warm the color of the week by one notch. This week, both of those wishes were answered. Not a single line at the bottom of the notes recorded a medicine time, and the little gift bag that had walked out of our home in the corner of her bag stepped, on Wednesday, into the hands of a Santa inside the daycare. The week, though, was short. Of five possible weekdays, only three carried a daycare note; Thursday and Friday already sat inside the long winter break, December 25 through January 2. The very end of the year quietly closed one notch early on the page. On Sunday night I looked at the wrapped gift bag in a corner of our living room one more time, trying to picture how it might appear inside the three weekday notes ahead.
Monday (12/22) – A “jjallang-jjallang” rhythm activity
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Monday. The note came in around 7:42. The first line said she had moved along to a song called “jjallang-jjallang,” spending a fun time with music. The onomatopoeia “jjallang-jjallang” sat inside quotation marks. Last week’s “ding-dong” had stepped one small spot over, and “jjallang-jjallang” now took its place.
The next line said when she heard music, she had moved her body now and then, shaken a balloon, shaken a rattle, and let her body bounce along to the rhythm — and how lovely that had been. I paused on “let her body bounce along to the rhythm.” A week ago, the same hand had pulled a wrist rattle off. This week, that same hand had returned to a rattle and shaken it again. Inside one week, the same instrument had been written in two different rhythms, two small spots apart.
The next line said her response to the sound and her self-expression had shown her joy in music play. “Self-expression” had appeared one more time. A week ago that phrase had sat on top of a fan. This week, it had moved one small spot — onto music. The last line said she had had a wonderfully lively day filled with laughter, and for the very first weekday of the week, there was no medicine time at the bottom. That small empty spot read clearly to me from the very first note of the week.
Tuesday (12/23) – Her first cake and her first whipped cream
Tuesday’s note arrived around 7:31. The first line said she had taken part in a “Christmas cake making” activity. “Christmas cake making” — seven characters appearing in a note for the first time. The thread of cooking activities that had begun two months ago with songpyeon had moved this week into a cake.
The next line said she had piped whipped cream with the teacher and placed decorations on top of the cake, one by one, to finish it. “Whipped cream” — a new word in the notes. Two months ago, the same hand had been tossing a piece of songpyeon dough. This week, the same hand had moved one more notch — piping whipped cream and pressing decorations down, two small beats inside one line.
The next line said since this was her first time, there had been a brief moment of hesitation, but with the teacher’s warm encouragement, she had gathered courage and stayed through to the end. I stayed long on “gathered courage and stayed through to the end.” A month earlier, on the textured board, “pulled her bottom back and hesitated” had moved to “bravely tried.” This week, the same flow had moved one more notch — “all the way to the end.” The next line said even in front of new experiences she had calmly tried, feeling a sense of accomplishment, which had been wonderful. “Sense of accomplishment” — a new phrase in the notes.
The last line said this had been a joyful and meaningful day with a special Christmas activity. “Meaningful” — also a quietly new phrase. At the bottom of the note, once again, no medicine time.
Wednesday (12/24) – A Santa, a penguin, and a fishing game
Wednesday’s note arrived around 7:54. There were forty-seven photos attached — nearly twice the usual number. The first line said she had received a gift from “Santa-grandpa” and felt the Christmas atmosphere. “Santa-grandpa” — five characters new to the notes. The next line said the principal had dressed up as Santa, but in front of her first Christmas-style scene, she had looked a little unfamiliar for a moment. I smiled at “a little unfamiliar for a moment.” The small costume of an adult had clearly arrived on her small shoulders in a slightly different beat, and that beat was now written inside one line.
The next line said she had also become a penguin with the sensory teacher and played in the snow, tapped a xylophone to explore its sounds, and joined a fishing game happily. “Penguin” and “xylophone” and “fishing” sat in one line, three new words at once. The usual rhythm was one or two new words per note. This line carried a thicker rhythm — three new words tucked into a single Christmas Eve.
The next line said her curiosity and active participation across every activity had let them feel her growth at one more level. “Visibly more grown up” was back. Two months earlier, this same phrase had sat in the first line of the first note after our family trip. This week, the same phrase appeared again, with a week between them — and that repetition, that close together, read differently from the first.
At the bottom, an announcement: “From December 25 through January 2, we are on a home-care break. Happy New Year.” The bottom-of-note slot, instead of a medicine time, held the year’s farewell note. The last daycare line of the year quietly settled into its place.
Thursday and Friday (12/25–12/26) – The home-care break begins
These two weekdays were closed days at the daycare. Thursday was Christmas Day itself; Friday was the first regular weekday already inside the winter break.
On Christmas Day, I pulled out the small gift bag — the one the daycare’s Santa-grandpa had handed her two days earlier — next to our small tree in the living room. Opening, again at home, the bag that had already been received once at daycare took about an hour of quiet inside our living room.
We dropped by my parents’ house briefly on Saturday evening. In one corner of their living room, Seori and Wuri came close and stepped away again, a few times each. The short visit during a Christmas week sat as one quiet line in the two weekday slots that had not been filled by daycare lines this week.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where the bottom-of-note slot held no medicine time at all. On Monday, “jjallang-jjallang” sat inside quotation marks. On Tuesday, “Christmas cake making” and “gathered courage and stayed through to the end” sat inside one line, in turn. On Wednesday, four new words — “Santa-grandpa,” “penguin,” “xylophone,” and “fishing” — arrived in a single Christmas Eve line. Of five weekdays, three carried a daycare note; the remaining two had already crossed into the first quiet spots of the long home-care break.
The two wishes from last week — “let each medicine slot sit empty” and “let a small wrapped Santa gift warm the week by one notch” — were both answered this week, at the same time. Lying down beside her, I quietly tried to imagine what word might appear in the very first line of the new year’s first daycare note. The first drop-off back after the break would land on January 5.
