9월의 세 번째 주가 시작됐다. 지난주 마지막 페이지에 미끄럼틀 위로 한 칸 더 올라가는 줄이 적히길 적었는데, 이번 주는 그 줄이 위가 아니라 옆으로, 그리고 더 멀리 걸어가는 자리에서 답을 받는 한 주였다. 주말 사이에 작은 사고가 한 번 있었다. 식탁 위로 의자를 올려두고 잠깐 등을 돌린 사이에 그 의자가 떨어지면서 이마 한 칸에 쓸린 자국이 남았다. 다행히 크게 울지 않았고 다른 문제는 없었지만, 일요일 저녁 연고를 사러 다녀오는 동안 마음 한구석은 한참 무거웠다. 그러나 같은 주말 안에 다른 한 칸도 있었다. 거실 한쪽에서 걸음마 보조기를 잡고 열 발자국쯤 걸은 장면이 있었고, 이마의 자국과 열 발자국이 같은 주말 안에 함께 들어와 있었다. 잠든 옆에 누워, 이번 주에는 그 두 줄 중 어느 쪽이 알림장에 한 번 더 적힐까 잠깐 헤아려봤다.

오전 7시 20분쯤, 출근버스 한가운데에서 선생님의 알림장이 들어왔다. 우유를 먼저 주었지만 젖병을 밀쳐내고 아침밥을 아주 맛있게 잘 먹었다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. 그 다음 줄에서 ‘난 밥이 좋아요’라는 말이 따옴표로 적혀 있었다. 알림장 안에서 따옴표가 등장한 게 처음이었다. 한 줄 안에 작은 농담 같은 표현이 들어와 있는 게, 평소 사실 보고체로만 적히던 줄과는 다른 박자였다.

화요일은 정류장에 7시 11분쯤 도착했다. 알림장은 7시 30분쯤 들어왔다. 놀이책의 버튼을 누르며 나오는 음악에 맞춰 신나게 춤을 췄다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. 한 주 전 손목 한 칸이었던 율동이, 이번 주에는 작은 몸으로 리듬을 타며 활짝 웃는 모습으로 한 칸 더 펼쳐져 있었다.
범보의자에 공을 넣고 그 위에 올라가 발로 밟으며 놀이도 즐겼다는 다음 줄에서, ‘발로 밟으며’라는 다섯 글자에 잠시 멈췄다. 발이라는 글자가 알림장 안에서 걸음 이외의 동작으로 적힌 게 처음이었다. 한 주 전까지 발은 한 발씩 옮기는 동작에 묶여 있었는데, 이번 주는 그 발이 작은 공 위에서 한 칸 다른 일을 하고 있었다.

몇 발자국씩 또박또박 걷고는 넘어지지 않고 스스로 중심을 잡으며 서 있는 모습에 선생님들이 박수를 치며 환호했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘또박또박’이라는 네 글자가 알림장에 처음으로 들어왔다. 그 단어를 두 번 읽었다. 한 주 전 첫걸음 영상 속 그 동작이, 한 주 사이에 또박또박이라는 부사로 옷을 갈아입고 들어와 있었다. 출근버스가 한 정거장 지나갈 동안 그 한 줄을 한 번 더 읽었다.

목요일 (9/18) – 윙크와 움직이는 말
목요일 알림장은 평소보다 조금 늦은 7시 36분쯤 들어왔다. 어제 도시락이 다른 친구와 바뀌었는데 오늘 그 친구가 결석을 해서 원에 있는 도시락으로 점심을 맛있게 잘 먹었다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. 도시락이 바뀐 일 자체는 처음 듣는 사건이었다. 같은 디자인 도시락을 들고 다니는 친구가 있다는 게 어색하기도 하고 다행스럽기도 한 한 줄이었다.
밝은 웃음으로 하루를 시작했다는 다음 줄에 이어, 항상 애교 많고 사랑스러운 하린이가 선생님을 보며 윙크도 해주고 예쁜 표정과 행동으로 선생님 마음을 사르르 녹였다는 줄이 따라왔다. ‘윙크’라는 두 글자가 알림장에 등장한 게 처음이었다. 표정이 한 칸 더 늘어났다는 뜻이었다. 한 주 전 인사가 고개로 내려왔는데, 이번 주는 그 인사가 한쪽 눈까지 한 번 더 옮겨가 있었다.

금요일 (9/19) – 짧은 한 줄로 닫는 한 주
금요일 알림장은 짧았다. 이번 한 주도 재미있게 지내다 보니 벌써 주말이 다 왔다는 한 줄, 하린이의 예쁜 웃음으로 가득한 한 주였다는 줄, 즐거운 주말 보내라는 줄, 그리고 턱받이와 수건을 보내달라는 한 줄. 마지막 한 줄은 또 같은 자리에 같은 항목이었다.
퇴근하고 집에 도착해 가방 안을 비웠다. 도시락통 하나, 빈 턱받이 하나, 수건 한 장이 차례로 나왔다. 한 주의 마지막 평일을 그렇게 한 칸씩 정리하면서, 이번 주에는 가방 안 구조가 그대로였구나 싶었다. 한 주 사이에 가방 안은 같은데, 그 안에 든 가벼움이 한 칸 더 커진 한 주였다.
한 주를 마치며

The third week of September began. On the last page of the previous week I had written a small wish that another line would appear about climbing one step higher onto the slide. This week the answer came not upward but sideways and farther forward. Over the weekend, a small accident happened. I had lifted a chair on top of the table to vacuum, and in the brief moment I turned my back, the chair fell and left a small scrape on WooRin’s forehead. She didn’t cry much and there was no real injury beyond that, but on Sunday evening, walking to the pharmacy to pick up ointment, my chest stayed heavy for a long time. And yet inside the same weekend, there was another small frame as well. In one corner of our living room, she had held a baby walker and taken something like ten steps. The mark on her forehead and those ten steps had landed inside the same weekend, side by side. Lying next to her, I wondered which of those two lines would show up again in the daycare notes this week.
Monday (9/15) – A small scrape and “I want rice”
Before dropping her off on Monday morning, I left a long note in the parent message box. One line said that a chair had fallen during the weekend and left a small scrape on her forehead. Another said the ointment had been bought and applied the night before. Another said that over the weekend she had taken something like ten steps. After I finished writing, I tucked the phone into my bag, then opened it again at the bus stop. The clearest words in that line, written close to one in the morning, were “we were so heartbroken.”
Around 7:20 in the morning, sitting in the middle of the bus, the teacher’s note arrived. The first line said we had given her milk first, but she had pushed the bottle aside and eaten her breakfast very well. The next line had something inside quotation marks: “I want rice.” Quotation marks had never appeared in a daycare note before. A small joking phrase tucked inside a line carried a different rhythm than the usual factual report.
The next line said she had played strongly and steadily through the day, full of “rice energy.” I paused on “rice energy.” Moving from formula to lunchbox, and from lunchbox to “rice energy,” had taken less than a month, and that pacing felt almost off. The last line said her absorbed, self-directed play with the toys had been very impressive. “Self-directed play” was new in the notes. Where her hand had once held tools or passed something back and forth, it had now stepped one notch further and was being described as something that built its own little games.
Tuesday (9/16) – A little foot stepping on a small ball
On Tuesday I got to the bus stop around 7:11. The note arrived around 7:30. The first line said she had pressed the buttons on a sound book and danced energetically to the music. Last week, the rhythm had been at her wrist. This week, that same rhythm had spread one notch wider — her whole little body taking the beat, smiling broadly.
The next line said she had put a ball into the Bumbo seat, climbed up, and stepped on it with her foot to play, and I paused on “stepping on it with her foot.” Until now, “foot” had only appeared in the notes as part of walking. This week, the foot had taken a side step into a different kind of motion — pressing onto a small ball as part of play.
The next line said that when the teacher took the ball out, worried she might fall, she would put it back and climb up again, repeating the whole thing. I smiled a little. The word “again” appearing twice in one line was a quietly tricky line from an adult point of view. Over lunch I flipped through the photos and stopped at one where the tip of her foot was just barely touching the ball.
Wednesday (9/17) – A day of steady, even steps
Wednesday’s note arrived around 7:21. The first line said she had stood up and walked, again and again, all day, growing visibly. “All day” was a unit of time that hadn’t appeared in a note before. A single week earlier, the line had been about her first steps. This week, that motion had been stretched across an entire day.
The next line said she had walked steady, even steps and then stood without falling, holding her own balance, and all the teachers had clapped and cheered. The word “steady and even” — 또박또박 in Korean — was appearing in a note for the first time. I read that word twice. The motion I had seen in last week’s first-steps video had quietly changed into an adverb and stepped back into the page. The bus passed one stop while I read the line again.
The next line said she had worn a confident face that looked like she was saying “I can do it on my own too,” and was so impressive, and quotation marks had appeared again. The second pair of quotation marks in one week. Having two playful, character-like lines inside a single week made the whole tone of the notes feel one notch lighter. The last line said that even when she fell she would get up and walk again, that her growth could really be felt, and that days of running around weren’t far away. The phrase “days of running” stayed with me for a long time. Just a couple of months ago I was still staring at her very first daycare drop-off photo, and now the words “days of running” were sitting in a line on the page.
Thursday (9/18) – A wink and a wobbling horse
Thursday’s note arrived a little later than usual, around 7:36. The first line said that yesterday her lunchbox had been swapped with another friend’s, but that friend was absent today, so she had eaten with one of the daycare’s own lunchboxes and enjoyed it. The lunchbox swap itself was a new event to me. The fact that there was another child carrying around the same lunchbox design was both a little disorienting and a little reassuring at the same time.
The next line said she had started the day with a bright laugh as always. The line after said that, full of charm and affection as always, she had even given the teacher a wink, melting the teacher’s heart with her little expressions and gestures. “Wink” was a new word in the notes. It meant her expressions had grown by one more notch. Last week the greeting had come down into a small bow of her head; this week it had moved one step further, all the way to one eye.
The next line said she had done a balancing activity on a rocking horse, and even on the wobbling horse she had held her body’s center well and hadn’t fallen even once. I paused on the word “balance.” Yesterday “steady and even,” today “balance.” Two new words appearing one after another in the same week felt like one more step up before the week could even close.
Friday (9/19) – A short line closing the week
Friday’s note was short. One line said that another fun week had passed and the weekend was already here. Another said the week had been full of WooRin’s pretty smiles. Another wished us a good weekend. The last asked us to send a bib and a towel again. The last line was, once more, the same item in the same place.
After work, I came home and emptied her bag. A single lunchbox, an empty bib, a single towel — they came out one at a time. As I tidied the last weekday of the week one little piece at a time, I noticed that this week, the structure of the bag had stayed the same. Same bag, same slots — but the little weight inside it had grown one notch lighter.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where a small scrape entered one of the lines and, in the same weekend, ten steps appeared at home for the first time. On Wednesday “steady and even” became an adverb on the page. On Thursday “wink” and “balance” both appeared inside the same week. Her foot began doing something other than walking. Her greeting moved from her head down to one eye. Quotation marks showed up in the notes twice in one week. The whole grain of the writing felt one notch lighter than before.
The mark on her forehead slowly faded over a few days, and next to it the word “steady and even” had quietly settled in. Lying down beside her, I wished that next week the steady steps would become five, then ten, and that no new line like the forehead scrape would need to appear at all.
