9월의 두 번째 주가 시작됐다. 지난주 마지막 페이지에 두 걸음이 세 걸음이 되고 세 걸음이 네 걸음이 되길 적었는데, 이번 주는 그 바람이 조금 다른 자리에서 답을 받는 한 주였다. 걸음이 바닥에만 머물지 않고, 미끄럼틀 위로 올라가려는 자리에서 한 번, 가을이 들어온 산책길에서 한 번, 친구와 공을 주고받는 자리에서 한 번 답을 했다. 일요일 저녁 잠든 옆에 누워 아침저녁으로 바람이 달라진 걸 한 번 더 느꼈고, 이번 주에는 여름이 한 칸 뒤로 물러나고 가을이 한 칸 들어올 거라는 짐작은 했지만, 그 가을이 알림장 안에까지 들어와 산책이라는 단어로 적힐 줄은 미리 짐작하지 못했다.
월요일 (9/8) – 안녕하세요에 고개를 숙인 인사
월요일 출근버스 정류장에 7시 10분쯤 도착했다. 알림장은 7시 34분쯤 들어왔다. 평소보다 조금 늦었다. 주말을 잘 보내고 기분 좋게 등원했다는 첫 줄에 이어, 환한 미소로 인사를 나누며 하루를 시작했다는 줄이 따라왔다. 그 다음 줄에서 ‘안녕하세요’라는 인사에 고개를 숙여 인사해 주었다는 한 줄을 두 번 읽었다. ‘고개를 숙여’라는 다섯 글자가 알림장에 적힌 게 처음이었다.
요즘은 미끄럼틀을 혼자서 올라가려는 시도도 하고, 손을 살짝 잡아주면 신나게 내려오기도 한다는 다음 줄에서, ‘혼자서 올라가려는 시도’라는 표현이 알림장에서 처음이었다. 지난주 목요일에 적힌 첫걸음이 바닥에 있었는데, 한 주 사이에 위로 올라가려는 방향이 한 칸 더 들어와 있었다. 출근버스가 한 정거장 지나갈 동안 그 장면을 머릿속에서 그려봤다. 미끄럼틀을 한 칸 올라가는 동작과 바닥에서 한 발 떼는 동작이 같은 주에 들어와 있는 게, 글로만 읽기에는 좀 빠른 한 칸 같았다.

오후가 되어 알림장이 다시 들어왔다. 핸드벨을 들고 동요에 맞춰 신나게 흔들며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. 손에 무언가가 들려 있어야 흔드는 동작이 가능하다는 게, 이번 줄에서 한 번 더 또렷해졌다. 환하게 웃으며 소리에 맞춰 손을 흔드는 모습이 사랑스러웠다는 다음 줄에서, ‘소리에 맞춰’라는 다섯 글자에 잠시 멈췄다. 지난주 율동 시간에 ‘까딱까딱’이었던 손이, 이번 주에는 핸드벨을 잡고 박자에 맞춰 흔드는 동작으로 한 칸 올라가 있었다.

주걱을 이용해 계란판 위에 작은 공을 조심조심 올려보며 집중력도 쑥쑥 자랐다는 다음 줄에서, ‘조심조심’이라는 네 글자에 한참 멈췄다. 손과 도구가 한 묶음으로 적힌 줄을 알림장에서 본 적이 잘 없었다. 한 주 전 손이 책을 달라고 앞으로 내밀어졌었는데, 이번 주는 손에 주걱이 들어와 있었다. 도구가 손에 잡힌 첫 줄을 두 번 읽었다.
귀여운 병아리 친구도 놀이터 위에 하나씩 붙여보며 소근육 발달 놀이에 푹 빠졌다는 줄에서 짧게 웃었다. ‘소근육’이라는 단어가 알림장에 등장한 게 처음이었다. 매주 같은 알림장 안에 처음 보는 단어가 한두 개씩 들어와 있다는 게, 한 달 사이에 점점 익숙해지고 있었다.
목요일 (9/11) – 가을이 들어온 산책
목요일은 회의가 길어져서 점심을 좀 늦게 먹었다. 점심을 먹다 말고 휴대폰을 봤더니 알림장이 8시 가까이에 들어와 있었다. 첫 줄에 ‘가을을 느끼는 산책’이라는 표현이 적혀 있었다. ‘가을’이라는 단어가 알림장에 등장한 게 이번이 처음이었다. 시원한 바람을 맞으며 나뭇잎이 흔들리는 모습도 보고, 작은 소리에도 귀를 기울이며 자연을 함께 느꼈다는 줄을 점심 식판 옆에 놓고 한 번 더 읽었다.
선생님과 공놀이를 하며 공을 굴려주면 두 손으로 받으려고 애쓰고, 선생님이 ‘주세요’라고 말하면 웃으며 공을 건네주었다는 다음 줄에서, ‘건네주었다’라는 표현이 알림장에서 처음이었다. 한 주 전 손이 무언가를 요구하는 방향으로 한 칸 옮겨갔었는데, 이번 주는 그 손이 주는 방향으로도 한 칸 더 옮겨가 있었다. 받는 손과 주는 손이 같은 줄 안에 들어와 있는 게, 한 칸 더 깊은 변화처럼 읽혔다.
던지기도, 주고받기도 능숙하게 해내며 소통하는 즐거움을 느꼈다는 줄에서, ‘소통’이라는 두 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 그 자리에 영상이 한 개 첨부돼 있었다. 회의 끝나고 자리에서 한 번, 퇴근하는 지하철에서 한 번, 집에 들어와 잠든 옆에서 한 번 더 봤다. 작은 손으로 공을 잡으려는 동작과, 그 공을 다시 앞으로 내미는 동작이 영상 안에서 짧게 이어졌다. 받는 동작과 주는 동작이 같은 화면 안에서 이어지는 게, 한 주 전 첫걸음 영상보다 조용한 한 컷이었지만, 그래서 더 길게 봤다.
금요일 (9/12) – 가을 인사
금요일 알림장은 짧았다. 아침저녁으로 부는 바람에 가을이 왔음을 느낀다는 한 줄, 무더웠던 여름을 잘 견뎌내고 성큼 다가온 가을도 재미있고 건강하게 잘 보내겠다는 줄, 주말 잘 보내라는 줄, 그리고 턱받이와 수건을 다시 보내달라는 한 줄. 마지막 한 줄은 8월 마지막 주와 같은 줄이었다. 가방 안 구조는 또 한 번 같은 자리에 같은 항목을 채워야 한다는 뜻이었다.
퇴근하고 집에 돌아가 가방 안을 비웠다. 짧은 한 주였는데도 가방 안 구조는 다시 한 칸 짜인 한 주였다. 가을이라는 단어가 알림장에 들어왔다는 한 줄을, 가방을 정리하면서 한 번 더 떠올렸다.
한 주를 마치며
이번 주는 가을이라는 단어가 알림장에 처음 들어온 한 주였다. 월요일에는 인사가 고개로 내려왔고, 화요일에는 손이 핸드벨을 잡고 박자에 맞춰 움직였고, 수요일에는 손에 주걱이 들어와 도구를 사용하기 시작했고, 목요일에는 산책이라는 단어가 자리한 자리에서 공이 주고받혔고, 금요일에는 가을이라는 단어가 한 번 더 알림장에 적혀 있었다. 받는 손과 주는 손이 한 줄 안에 같이 들어왔다는 게, 이번 주에서 가장 길게 따라온 한 줄이었다.

The second week of September began. On the last page of the previous week I had written a small wish that two steps would become three, and three steps would become four. This week the answer came back to me in slightly different places. Her steps did not stay only on the floor — they showed up once at the bottom of a slide she was trying to climb on her own, once on an autumn walk where the word “autumn” finally entered the notes, and once between two small hands rolling a ball back and forth with a teacher. Lying next to her on Sunday night, I felt one more time how the air had changed in the morning and evening, and I had guessed summer would step back one notch this week with autumn moving in to take its place. What I had not guessed was that autumn would walk all the way into the daycare note and be written down as the word “walk.”
Monday (9/8) – A “hello” answered with a small bow of her head
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Monday morning. The note arrived around 7:34, a little later than usual. The first line said WooRin had spent the weekend well and come to daycare in a good mood. The next line said she had started the day with a bright smile and her hellos. Then a line that I read twice — that when someone said “hello” to her, she had lowered her head a little to greet them back. “Lowered her head” had never appeared in a note before.
The next line said she was now trying to climb the slide on her own, and if someone held her hand a little she would happily slide down. “Trying to climb on her own” was new in the notes. Last Thursday’s first steps had been on the floor. In one week, an upward direction had moved into the notes too. As the bus passed one stop, I tried to picture the scene in my head. The action of climbing up one step on a slide and the action of moving one foot forward on the floor were now living in the same week, and on the page they felt like a quick little leap.
The next line said her concentration while fitting blocks together had grown noticeably stronger, and I read it twice. The word “noticeably” had a level of emphasis that usually didn’t appear in these notes. Over lunch I flipped through the photos and stopped at a picture with a tiny smudge on the tip of her finger.
Tuesday (9/9) – Cherry tomatoes and a handbell
On Tuesday morning, before leaving for work, I put a few cherry tomatoes into a small bowl on one corner of the kitchen table. On the way to drop her off around 8:30, I left a short note in the parent message box of the app. “She had some cherry tomatoes this morning before coming in.” I tucked my phone back into my bag and read the line again on the commuter bus. It was a short line, but the clearest words in it were “had some” — the small fact that she had eaten and then come in.
Later in the afternoon, the teacher’s note arrived. The first line said she had held a handbell and shaken it enthusiastically along to a children’s song. The fact that something had to be held in her hand for the shaking motion to even be possible came across more clearly than usual in that line. The next line said she had smiled brightly while waving her hand in time with the sound, and I paused on the phrase “in time with the sound.” Last week, her “tapping along” had been at the wrist. This week, the wrist was now holding a handbell and moving to the beat — another small step up.
The next line said the teacher had given her a baby oil massage before nap time, and I let out a small breath. The line after that said she had relaxed at the gentle scent, her stomach being softly rubbed, and had fallen asleep quickly with a peaceful expression. I let “peaceful expression” sit with me for a while. At lunch, scrolling through the photos, I stopped on a picture of her asleep with her mouth slightly parted.
Wednesday (9/10) – A spatula, a tiny ball, and a small chick
On Wednesday I got to the bus stop slightly earlier than usual. The note arrived around 7:23. The first line said WooRin had been very excited during sensory play time. The next line said she had moved her body to the music while shaking a bell with the sensory teacher, reacting to the sounds. “The sensory teacher” was a new title in the notes. One more name appearing meant one more person she was now meeting inside the daycare.
The next line said she had used a spatula to carefully place small balls onto an egg carton, growing in concentration. I stayed on the word “carefully” for a long time. Lines combining her hand with an actual tool had been rare in the notes. A week ago her hand had reached out asking for a book. This week a spatula had been placed into that same hand. I read that first line about a tool in her hand twice.
The next line said she had also placed cute little chicks onto a playground, one by one, and become absorbed in fine-motor play, and I smiled at it. “Fine-motor” was another new word in the notes. New words showing up one or two at a time inside the same kind of note was, after a month, slowly becoming something I could recognize.
Thursday (9/11) – Autumn arriving as a walk
Thursday’s meetings ran long, so I had a late lunch. When I checked my phone mid-meal, I saw the note had come in around 8 a.m. The first line had the phrase “a walk to feel autumn.” The word “autumn” was appearing in a note for the very first time. The next line said she had felt the cool breeze, watched leaves trembling in the wind, listened to small sounds, and shared the moment with nature. I read it once next to my tray and once more before going back into the meeting.
The next line said she had played with a ball with the teacher: when the teacher rolled the ball to her, she tried to catch it with both hands, and when the teacher said “give it to me,” she had laughed and handed the ball back. The phrase “handed it back” was new in the notes. A week ago her hand had moved one notch toward asking for something. This week, that same hand had moved one more notch toward giving as well. The two — receiving and giving — sitting inside the same line felt like a deeper shift than the words themselves.
The next line said she had thrown and exchanged the ball comfortably, and had felt the joy of communicating. The word “communicating” had never been in a note before. A short video was attached at that part. I watched it once at my desk after the meeting, once on the subway home, and once more sitting next to her while she slept. Inside the clip, her small hand reached out to catch the ball and then offered it forward again, the two motions linked together. The fact that receiving and giving were now happening in the same little frame felt quieter than last week’s first-steps video, and exactly because of that, I watched it longer.
Friday (9/12) – An autumn greeting
Friday’s note was short. One line said the morning and evening winds were now carrying autumn. Another said the long, humid summer had been carried through well, and the teacher would walk her through this autumn just as carefully. Another said to have a good weekend, and the last asked us to send a bib and a towel again. That last line was the same line from the last week of August. The bag’s geometry was being asked to refill the same spots one more time.
After work, I came home and emptied the bag. Even after such a short week, the bag had been rearranged by one more notch. I thought again about the fact that the word “autumn” had walked into a daycare note while I was sorting through everything.
Wrapping up the week
This was the week the word “autumn” entered a daycare note for the first time. On Monday a greeting came down into a small bow of her head. On Tuesday her hand learned to hold a handbell and move it to the beat. On Wednesday a spatula was placed into that same hand, and she began using tools. On Thursday a ball was rolled back and forth in a place the note called a walk. On Friday “autumn” was written into the note again. The line that stayed with me the longest from this week was the one where receiving and giving sat together inside the same sentence.
Lying next to her, I quietly wished that next week the word “autumn” would appear in the notes one more time, and that one more line would be written about climbing one step higher onto the slide. Inside the bag, a bib and a towel needed to go back in their places.
