지난주 글 끝에 남은 콧물이 그새 말끔히 가시기를 적어 두었는데, 이번 한 주는 그 바람과 반대로 흘렀다. 장맛비가 들이치듯 콧물이 도로 차올랐고, 주 중반부터는 기침과 미열까지 따라붙었다. 회사 책상에 앉아 일하는 동안에도 머릿속 한구석에는 지금쯤 코를 훌쩍이고 있을 아이 얼굴이 자꾸 걸렸다. 아침마다 가방에 약봉투와 손수건을 한 번 더 챙겨 넣고, 출근 버스 안에서 휴대폰으로 그날의 소식을 더듬어 보고, 저녁에 돌아와 품에 안고 콧물을 닦아 주는 일이 이번 주의 정해진 순서가 됐다. 둘째까지 옮을까 마음을 졸이느라 아내와 나는 며칠을 번갈아 뒤척였다. 그래도 수요일, 처음으로 흔들 말에 올라탔다는 한 줄에 가슴 한켠이 환해졌다. 아픈 와중에도 아이는 제 속도로 한 발씩 나아가고 있었다.
월요일 (6/23) – 주말을 푹 쉬고 온 아이
월요일 아침은 그래도 가벼웠다. 주말 이틀을 집에서 푹 쉬어서인지, 현관을 나설 때까지 기분이 좋아 보였다. 출근 버스 정류장에 서서 문득 지금쯤 선생님 품에 안겨 방긋 웃고 있겠다 싶었다. 평소에도 아침잠에서 막 깬 얼굴로 누군가를 보면 일단 웃고 보는 아이라, 그 장면이 어렵지 않게 그려졌다.
그날은 손으로 무언가를 한참 만지작거리며 논 모양이었다. 블록을 양손에 하나씩 쥐고 툭툭 부딪쳐 소리를 내고, 옆에서 친구들이 하는 걸 곁눈질로 보다가 슬그머니 따라 해 봤다고 한다. 저녁에 안아 들었을 때 손바닥이 유난히 발그레했던 걸 보면, 하루 종일 무언가를 쥐었다 놓았다 하며 손끝으로 세상을 시험해 본 하루였구나 짐작이 갔다. 낮잠도 토닥토닥 다독여 주니 잘 자고 일어났다는 소식에, 월요일치고는 순한 하루였다며 마음을 놓았다.
화요일 (6/24) – 땡땡, 컵으로 만든 첫 리듬
화요일 점심을 먹다 말고 휴대폰을 들여다봤다. 오전 내내 컵을 양손에 들고 흔들며 놀았다는 소식이었다. 컵 두 개를 맞부딪혀 ‘땡땡’ 소리가 나자 그게 신기했는지 까르르 웃으며 같은 동작을 몇 번이고 반복했다고 한다. 사무실 의자에 앉아 그 장면을 떠올리니 나도 모르게 입꼬리가 올라갔다.
며칠 사이 손 조절이 부쩍 능숙해진 게 느껴진다. 처음엔 그저 쥐는 것만으로도 벅차 보였는데, 이제는 두 손에 든 물건을 부딪쳐 박자를 맞춰 보기까지 한다니. 쿵짝쿵짝, 제 손으로 만든 첫 리듬이었던 셈이다. 퇴근길 지하철에서 그 소리를 상상하며 한참을 갔다. 별것 아닌 컵 두 개가 아이에게는 훌륭한 악기였을 것이다.
수요일 (6/25) – 처음 올라탄 흔들 말, 그리고 시작된 콧물
수요일은 두 얼굴의 하루였다. 낮에는 처음으로 흔들 말에 올라탄 날이었고, 밤에는 콧물이 본격적으로 도진 날이었다.
흔들 말을 보자마자 얼른 기어가서 매달렸다고 한다. 흔들흔들 움직이기 시작하자 깜짝 놀란 표정을 짓다가도, 잠시 뒤엔 재미있다는 듯 웃었고, 한 번 맛을 보더니 그다음엔 스스로 손을 내밀어 또 타려 했다는 것이다. 짧은 영상 한 편이 남아 있었는데, 말 위에서 균형을 잡고 있는 표정이 제법 의젓했다. 어른들 눈에는 작은 놀이기구일 뿐이지만, 아이에게는 처음 올라타 본 ‘탈것’이었을 테니 그 자체로 큰 도전이었을 것이다.
그런데 그날 낮잠 때부터 신호가 왔다. 분유를 평소와 달리 다 비우지 못하고 새근새근 잠들어 버렸고, 맑은 콧물이 비치고 자면서 기침도 살짝 했다고 한다. 저녁에 집에 들어와 안아 보니 코가 막혀 숨소리가 답답했다. 그날 밤 아내가 늦게 알림을 한 통 더 남겼다. 어제부터 콧물기침이 심해졌고, 아침엔 노란 콧물이 나왔으며, 잘 때 코가 차서 뒤척이긴 했어도 잠은 그래도 잤다고. 아침에 살짝 열감이 있나 싶어 재 보니 37.1도, 미열이라 부르기도 애매한 숫자였지만 부모 마음엔 그 0.1도가 묵직했다. 투약을 부탁드리고, 혹시 열이 오르면 연락 달라는 말로 그날 밤을 닫았다.
목요일 (6/26) – 딸랑이를 쥐고도 잊지 않은 걱정
목요일은 온종일 휴대폰을 곁에 두고 일했다. 열이 오르면 연락이 올지도 모른다는 생각에, 회의 중에도 화면을 흘끔거렸다. 다행히 체온은 수시로 확인했는데 큰 탈은 없었다는 소식에 한숨을 돌렸다. 다만 낮잠 들기 전 잠투정이 평소와 달랐던 모양이다. 안아 달래고 분유를 먹이고 나서야 곤히 잠들었고, 자는 동안에는 기침 때문에 푹 자지는 못했다고 한다.
그 와중에도 노는 건 노는 거라고, 좋아하는 딸랑이를 손에 쥐고 신나게 놀았다는 이야기엔 슬며시 웃음이 났다. 딸랑이를 쥐고 바닥을 콩콩 두드리거나 손을 흔들어 소리를 내며, 짧은 시간에도 움직임이 점점 다양해졌다고. 아픈 와중에도 손은 쉬지 않는구나 싶어, 안쓰러우면서도 대견했다. 퇴근 버스에서 약을 잊지 않고 먹였는지 아내에게 메시지를 보내고, 오늘은 부디 밤에 덜 깨기를 속으로 빌었다.
금요일 (6/27) – 코막힘에 울다 다시 잠든 한 주의 끝
금요일 아침, 가방에 수건과 턱받이를 넉넉히 챙겨 넣었다. 콧물이며 침이며 닦아 줄 일이 많을 듯해서였다. 컨디션 자체는 괜찮았다지만 맑은 콧물은 여전했고, 낮잠 때는 코가 막혀 콧소리를 내며 잤다고 한다. 한 시간쯤 곤하게 자다가 코막힘이 답답했는지 울며 깨 버렸고, 한참을 안아 다독여 주고 나서야 다시 잠이 들었다는 대목에서는, 그 장면이 눈앞에 선해 마음이 한 번 내려앉았다.
여담이지만 그날 저녁엔 단지 일로 잠깐 회의가 있어 평소보다 늦게 들어왔다. 동대표를 맡고부터 금요일 저녁이 종종 이렇게 길어진다. 그래도 현관문을 열면 매트 위에서 고개를 들어 나를 보는 그 얼굴 하나로 하루가 정리됐다. 코맹맹이 소리로 칭얼대는 아이를 한참 안고 있다가, 빨리 이 감기가 떨어져야 할 텐데 하고 아내와 같은 말을 또 주고받았다.
한 주를 마치며
이번 주는 한 손에 성장, 다른 한 손에 감기를 쥐고 지나간 한 주였다. 월요일엔 블록을 부딪쳐 소리를 냈고, 화요일엔 컵으로 첫 리듬을 만들었고, 수요일엔 흔들 말에 처음 올라탔다. 그리고 같은 수요일 밤부터 콧물이 도져, 목요일과 금요일은 기침과 코막힘과 미열 사이에서 아이도 우리도 잠을 설쳤다.
곁에서 하루 종일 지켜보지는 못했지만, 사진 몇 장과 짧은 영상 한 편으로 한 주의 결을 더듬어 볼 수 있었다. 아픈 와중에도 흔들 말에 손을 내밀고 딸랑이를 흔들던 그 손이, 결국 이번 주를 버티게 한 힘이었던 것 같다. 다음 한 주에는 부디 이 콧물이 말끔히 떨어지기를, 코막힘에 울다 깨는 밤이 더는 없기를, 그래서 월요일 아침엔 다시 방긋 웃으며 등원하기를. 코맹맹이 소리로 잠든 아이 옆에 누워, 6월의 넷째 주를 천천히 닫았다.

At the end of last week’s entry, I wrote that I hoped the last of her runny nose would finally clear up. This week went the opposite way. Like rain seeping in during the monsoon season, the runny nose came creeping back, and by midweek a cough and a low fever had joined it. Even while I was at my desk at work, the back of my mind kept drifting to her little face, sniffling somewhere right about now. Every morning I tucked an extra packet of medicine and a handkerchief into her bag, checked the day’s news on my phone on the commuter bus, and wiped her nose while holding her when I got home in the evening — that became the fixed order of this week. My wife and I took turns tossing and turning, worried our younger one might catch it too. And yet, on Wednesday, one line — that she’d climbed onto a rocking horse for the very first time — lit up a corner of my chest. Even while under the weather, WooRin was still moving forward, one step at a time, at her own pace.
Monday (6/23) – A Child Who Rested Well Over the Weekend
Monday morning felt light, at least. Maybe because she’d rested at home for two full days over the weekend, she seemed to be in good spirits right up until we walked out the door. Standing at the bus stop, I suddenly pictured her snuggled in her teacher’s arms about now, beaming. She’s the kind of child who, the moment she sees someone after waking, simply smiles first — so that image came to me easily.
That day, it seems she spent a long while fiddling with things in her hands. She held a block in each hand, knocked them together to make a sound, and after watching the other children out of the corner of her eye, quietly tried it herself. When I lifted her up that evening and noticed how flushed her little palms were, I could guess it had been a day of gripping and letting go, testing the world with her fingertips. And hearing that she fell asleep and woke up well from her nap after a few gentle pats, I let myself relax — a mild day, as Mondays go.
Tuesday (6/24) – Clink-Clink, Her First Rhythm Made with Cups
On Tuesday I glanced at my phone in the middle of lunch. The news was that she’d spent the whole morning playing, holding cups in both hands and shaking them. When the two cups clinked together and made a “clink-clink” sound, she found it so fascinating that she burst into giggles and repeated the motion over and over. Sitting there in my office chair, I felt the corners of my mouth lift without realizing it.
I can feel how much more skillful her hands have become over just a few days. At first, simply grasping something seemed to take all her effort, and now she can knock two objects together and keep a beat. Clink-clink — her very first rhythm, made with her own hands. On the subway ride home I rode along imagining that sound. Two ordinary cups must have been a fine instrument to her.
Wednesday (6/25) – Her First Rocking Horse, and the Runny Nose Begins
Wednesday was a day with two faces. By day, it was the first time she rode a rocking horse; by night, it was the day her runny nose set in for real.
The moment she spotted the rocking horse, it seems she crawled right over and clung to it. When it began to sway, she made a startled face — but only for a moment, then laughed as if she found it fun, and once she’d had a taste, she reached out with her own hands to ride it again. There was a short video left behind, and the look on her face as she kept her balance on top of the horse was quite dignified. To grown-up eyes it’s just a small playground ride, but to her it was the first “vehicle” she’d ever climbed onto, so it was a real challenge in its own right.
But starting from that day’s nap, the signs came. Unlike usual, she couldn’t finish her bottle and drifted off to sleep, a clear runny nose appeared, and she coughed lightly in her sleep. When I got home that evening and held her, her nose was so stuffed that her breathing sounded labored. Late that night my wife left one more message: the runny nose and cough had worsened since the day before, yellow mucus had come out in the morning, and although she’d tossed about with a stuffy nose at night, she’d still managed to sleep. When she thought she felt a touch of warmth in the morning and took her temperature, it read 37.1°C — a number too borderline to even call a fever, yet to a parent’s heart that 0.1 degree weighed heavy. We asked for medicine to be given, and closed out the night with a note: please call us if the fever climbs.
Thursday (6/26) – A Worry Not Forgotten, Even While Holding a Rattle
On Thursday I kept my phone beside me all day as I worked. Thinking a call might come if her fever rose, I kept stealing glances at the screen even during meetings. Thankfully, her temperature was checked often and there was no real trouble, which let me breathe out. Her fussing before her nap, though, seems to have been different from other days. Only after being held and soothed and fed her bottle did she finally fall into a deep sleep, and even then she couldn’t sleep soundly because of the coughing.
And yet — play is play, as they say — the story that she’d happily played holding her favorite rattle brought a quiet smile to my face. Gripping the rattle, she tapped the floor, “tap tap,” and shook her hand to make sounds, her movements growing more varied even in that short time. Her hands don’t rest even when she’s sick, I thought, both aching for her and proud of her at once. On the commuter bus home, I texted my wife to check whether she’d remembered the medicine, and silently prayed she’d wake less in the night this time.
Friday (6/27) – The Week Ends with Her Crying from a Stuffy Nose, Then Sleeping Again
Friday morning, I packed plenty of towels and bibs into her bag, figuring there’d be a lot of runny nose and drool to wipe. Her condition itself was said to be fine, but the clear runny nose lingered, and during her nap she slept with a stuffy, snuffly sound. After sleeping deeply for about an hour, it seems the congestion grew too uncomfortable and she woke up crying — and only fell back asleep after a long while of being held and soothed. At that passage, the scene was so vivid in my mind that my heart sank for a moment.
On a side note, that evening I had a brief meeting on building matters, so I came home later than usual. Ever since I took on the role of resident representative, Friday evenings sometimes stretch out like this. Still, the moment I open the front door and she lifts her head from the mat to look at me, that one face puts the whole day in order. I held her for a long while as she whined in a stuffed-up voice, and my wife and I traded the same words once more: this cold really needs to pass soon.
Closing the Week
This was a week spent holding growth in one hand and a cold in the other. On Monday she knocked blocks together to make a sound, on Tuesday she made her first rhythm with cups, and on Wednesday she climbed onto a rocking horse for the first time. And from that same Wednesday night, the runny nose came back, so Thursday and Friday passed with all of us — her included — losing sleep somewhere between cough, congestion, and a low fever.
I couldn’t watch over her all day from her side, but with a few photos and one short video I was able to trace the texture of the week. The same hands that reached out for the rocking horse and shook the rattle even while she was sick were, in the end, what carried her through. For the coming week, I hope this runny nose clears up for good, that there are no more nights of waking in tears from a stuffy nose, and that come Monday morning she heads off to daycare beaming once again. Lying beside her as she slept in her stuffed-up little voice, I slowly closed out the fourth week of June.
