The end of March and the beginning of April both ended up on the same page this week. There was a small wish I had written at the end of last week’s entry — that the pharmacy bag would get a little lighter, that her nose wouldn’t get blocked at night. That sentence followed me around for seven days. To say it plainly first: the bag got heavier. A new antibiotic was added, and a new medicine to thin out her mucus was started. And yet, somewhere in the middle of the week, WooRin began to smile again. There were mornings on the commuter bus when my hands trembled opening the daycare notebook, lunch hours when I couldn’t put my phone down, and evenings when I measured her day by how heavy she felt the moment I picked her up at the front door. The baby and her little sister cried together on a couple of late nights. Still, by Wednesday evening, my wife and I were finally laughing across the dinner table again. Babbling sounds had grown. She could turn 360 degrees while sitting. By the end of the week, more had been gained than lost.
Monday (3/31) — The Last Day of March, A Heavier Bag
Monday morning started a little earlier than usual. My wife told me WooRin had not been able to fall asleep until very late on Sunday night. She seemed to drop off around 7, but woke up after thirty minutes and showed no sign of going back to sleep until 9. In the end, my wife gave up and changed her diaper, which woke her up completely. She had not slept well because of her stuffy nose. I watched my wife packing one extra of everything into the daycare bag — diapers, wipes, formula — and then I noticed the clock. I was late.
The notification arrived on the commuter bus. The daycare note. “Maybe she’s a little tired coming back from the weekend; her condition was a bit off today.” I paused at that line. Then the next: runny nose, lots of coughing. Then a short note that the pacifier had helped settle her. A tiny detail — they had trimmed her nails for us. That little line warmed something inside me. The stuffy nose was severe, and the mucus running down into her throat was causing the cough. They prescribed a new medicine to thin out the mucus, plus a different antibiotic to be given only once at night. We had started the dose the night before. On the bus I read my wife’s message again and again, picturing her hands sorting the new medicine bottles. Maybe the whole week would just be measured in the weight of the pharmacy bag.
At lunch the daycare note arrived. I opened the photos first. Her hair was gently tied up. The teacher had tried tying WooRin’s hair for the first time. Wasn’t it adorable, the note asked. I couldn’t close the photo for a while. A coworker had to call my name twice before I could put down my phone and take my tray. Her babbling had been especially active that day — “uh uh, eu eu, eum-ppa, eum-ppa.” I tried pronouncing those sounds quietly to myself. That small mouth that I had handed over at the 7:10 bus stop was making eum-ppa eum-ppa sounds somewhere right now. Wednesday (4/2) — Spraying Formula While Laughing
Wednesday was the middle of the week. On the bus, I tried to guess which line of the daycare note would make my chest tighten today. But this time the very first sentence felt different. WooRin’s condition seemed to have recovered, and she smiled all day, the teacher wrote. My shoulders dropped a notch right there. Before her nap, she had been drinking formula while laughing — laughing, drinking, then spraying the formula in a tiny burst, then doing it all again. The teacher wrote “kekeke” — she laughed out loud — and I caught myself smiling on the bus. The person next to me looked over briefly, so I half-covered my phone.
After lunch I opened the note again. She seemed to be having dreams during her nap — sometimes whimpering, then suddenly bursting into a small cry. She had been coughing in her sleep too. My chest dropped again at that line. The antibiotic was making her poop loose, and the mucus-thinning medicine had been pulling the mucus out all day; the coughing had been heavy. Thursday morning I left a little later than usual. My meeting had ended late the night before, and since WooRin was doing better, I decided to eat breakfast with the family first. My wife packed a fresh formula container into the bag and said she wanted to try a new baby food brand. She had left a note for the teacher asking them to watch how well WooRin took to it. Sometimes she frowned and cried when we offered formula, but then eventually drank it. Since WooRin was a good eater for baby food, my wife was planning to expand to three solid meals a day once she settled in. Another small stage was beginning.
The note that arrived at lunch was a long one. The teacher began with a beautiful line — that a child’s heart grows a little more slowly than the seasons, but more solidly. I paused on that sentence. WooRin had learned to share with a friend during play, and had been practicing her belly-crawl. I stared at the word “belly-crawl” for a long time. That little body, pulling itself forward with one arm, then again. While I pictured it, my lunch went cold. Back home that evening, I placed WooRin gently on the living room mat. I wanted to see her belly-crawl with my own eyes. She really did pull her arm forward — her small body advanced a little less than a hand-span. That little hand-span was the longest distance she had traveled all week.
Friday (4/4) — A Tiny Succulent and Arbor Day
Friday morning was short. So was the daycare note. A short greeting wishing us a peaceful, love-filled weekend. A short line saying that for Korean Arbor Day, the daycare was sending each child home with a small succulent. And one more line: she had been sneezing and coughing often today.
That short note felt like a small gift, arrived at the end of a long week of antibiotics, mucus-thinning medicine, loose poop, and runny nose. I read those few lines twice on the bus. The photo showed a tiny succulent pot, smaller than WooRin’s palm. I had completely missed that Korean Arbor Day was approaching.
When I came home, I opened the daycare bag and found the little pot. I sat WooRin down, and placed it on the dining table. My wife and I leaned in and looked at it for a long time. Each tiny leaf was so distinct. I quietly wished that next week this little plant would be touched by our daughter’s small fingertips at this very table.
Wrapping Up the Week
The last week of March and the first week of April ended up written on the same page. The pharmacy bag got heavier this week. A new antibiotic was added, and a mucus-thinning medicine was started. Her nose ran constantly, her coughing came and went, and her poop bounced between loose and normal. And yet, inside all of that, WooRin learned to babble “eum-ppa eum-ppa” for the first time, spun 360 degrees while sitting, belly-crawled a hand-span forward, started learning to share with a friend, had her hair tied up for the very first time in a photo, and came home on Friday holding a tiny succulent pot for Korean Arbor Day. More had been gained than lost. I quietly wish that next week her runny nose will calm down a little more, that the antibiotic course will end soon, and that the three solid meals will settle in naturally. With my eyes on that small succulent on the dining table, I gathered another tiny wish.
