12월의 두 번째 주가 시작됐다. 지난주 마지막 페이지에 약 시간이 한 번도 적히지 않길 적었는데, 이번 주는 그 한 줄이 절반쯤만 답을 받은 한 주였다. 월요일과 화요일 알림장 마지막에 약 시간이 한 번씩 더 적혀 있었고, 수요일부터는 그 자리가 한 칸씩 다시 비어 있었다. 감기는 한 주 끝자락에 가까워질수록 한 칸씩 옅어졌다. 다만 같은 한 주 안에 다른 자리에서 큰 줄이 한두 칸 들어왔다. 수요일에 처음 적힌 역할 놀이 한 줄과, 목요일에 처음 등장한 크리스마스트리 한 줄이었다. 한 주의 첫 절반이 회복으로 흘러갔고, 두 번째 절반은 12월이라는 계절의 색이 한 칸씩 들어오고 있었다. 잠든 옆에 누워, 거실 한쪽 약 봉투 자리에 크리스마스 작은 장식이 들어올 차례인가 잠깐 헤아려봤다.
월요일 (12/8) – 겨울 그림 카드와 약 한 번 더
월요일 출근버스 정류장에 7시 10분쯤 도착했다. 알림장은 7시 57분쯤 들어왔다. 평소보다 늦은 시간이었다. 첫 줄에서 ‘코가 계속 나와 수시로 닦아주며 컨디션을 살펴보았다’는 한 줄을 봤다. 한 주 전 마지막에 적혀 있던 ‘여러 번 닦아주었다’는 한 줄이, 이번 주 첫 줄로 옮겨와 있었다.
겨울날씨에 대한 이야기도 나누고 겨울에 할 수 있는 놀이 종류에 대해 알아보며 관련된 그림 카드를 살펴보고, 같은 그림의 카드를 골라보는 활동도 해보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘겨울날씨에 대한 이야기’라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 알림장에 ‘겨울’이라는 단어가 처음으로 한 칸 자리 잡았다.
아직은 교사의 도움이 필요해 손을 잡고 함께 천천히 참여했지만, 활동에 관심을 보이며 잘 따라와 주는 모습이 기특했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘교사의 도움이 필요해’라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 한 주 전 ‘스스로’라는 단어가 첫 줄에 자리하던 자리에, 이번 주는 한 칸 더 부드러운 표현이 들어와 있었다. 마지막 줄에 ‘약 1시 10분에 먹였다’는 짧은 한 줄. 알림장 마지막 줄 자리에 약 시간이 다시 자리하고 있었다.
화요일 (12/9) – 익숙한 그림을 가리킨 손가락
화요일 알림장은 7시 24분쯤 들어왔다. 병풍 그림책을 펼쳐 동물과 과일 그림을 찾아보며 집중해 놀이했다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. ‘병풍 그림책’이라는 다섯 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다.
가장 길게 멈췄던 줄은 그 다음이었다. ‘익숙한 그림을 보면 손가락으로 가리키며 표현하기도 했다’는 한 줄이었다. 한 주 전 사자와 기린을 가리키던 그 손가락이, 이번 주는 ‘익숙한 그림’이라는 더 큰 단위로 한 칸 더 자리하고 있었다. ‘익숙한’이라는 세 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다.
콧물이 계속 나와 수시로 닦아주었고 전반적으로 잘 놀이하다가도 몸상태가 안 좋은지 가끔 짜증을 보이기도 했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘짜증을 보이기도 했다’라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 알림장에 ‘짜증’이라는 두 글자가 처음 등장했다. 몸이 회복으로 가는 한 칸 사이에, 표정이 한 박자 다른 자리로 새 적혀 있었다.
교사와 함께 차분히 놀잇감을 탐색하며 하루를 잘 보냈다는 다음 줄에서, ‘차분히’라는 세 글자가 따라왔다. 평소엔 ‘신나게’ 같은 부사로 적히던 자리에, 이번 주는 ‘차분히’라는 한 칸 다른 부사가 들어와 있었다. 마지막에 ‘약 1시 10분에 먹였다’는 짧은 한 줄이 어제와 같은 자리에 한 번 더 적혀 있었다.
수요일 (12/10) – 딩동과 첫 역할 놀이
수요일 알림장은 7시 21분쯤 들어왔다. 오감 선생님과 함께 택배 기사가 되어 놀이에 참여했다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. ‘택배 기사’라는 네 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 처음 보는 역할 놀이가 한 줄에 자리하고 있었다.
작은 수레에 상자를 싣고 옮겨보며 집중해서 활동에 참여했고, 초인종을 누르는 순간 ‘딩동’ 소리가 울리자 신이 나서 더욱 즐겁게 배달을 이어갔다는 다음 줄에서, ‘딩동’이라는 두 글자가 따옴표 안에 들어와 있었다. 한 주 전 같은 따옴표 자리에 있던 ‘아빠’ 두 글자가, 이번 주는 ‘딩동’이라는 두 글자로 한 칸 옮겨와 있었다.
처음 해보는 역할 놀이였지만 호기심을 가지고 잘 따라오며 상자를 싣고 이동하는 모습이 귀여웠다는 다음 줄에서, ‘역할 놀이’라는 네 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 손이 도구를 잡고, 손이 그림을 가리키던 데에서, 이번 주는 그 손이 한 사람의 역할을 잠깐 입어보는 자리로 한 칸 더 들어가 있었다.
마지막 부분에 ‘2차 상담 기간입니다. 영아의 감기예방을 위해 전화상담으로 진행합니다. 상담가능 시간을 알려주세요’라는 안내가 따라왔다. 학기 끝자락이 가까워졌다는 작은 표시였다. 알림장 마지막 줄 자리에 약 시간 대신 상담 안내가 한 칸 들어와 있었다.
목요일 (12/11) – 크리스마스트리 꾸미기
목요일 알림장은 7시 20분쯤 들어왔다. 첫 줄에 ‘크리스마스트리 꾸미기 미술활동을 했다’는 한 줄이 들어왔다. ‘크리스마스트리’라는 다섯 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 12월의 색이 알림장 첫 줄로 한 칸 들어와 있었다.
도화지에 그린 트리를 색연필로 천천히 색칠하고 풀을 발라 반짝이는 색모래를 뿌리며 즐겁게 표현해 보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘색모래’라는 세 글자가 처음 등장했다. 가을 끝자락에서 시작된 색의 흐름이, 이번 주는 트리 위로 한 칸 옮겨와 있었다.
풀 바르기까지 잘했는데 처음 보는 색모래는 낯설었는지 손을 뺐다는 다음 줄에서, ‘손을 뺐다’라는 짧은 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 두 주 전 촉감판 위에서 ‘엉덩이를 쏙 빼며 망설였다’는 표현이 있었는데, 이번 주는 그 망설임이 손으로 한 칸 옮겨와 있었다. 선생님과 손을 잡고 작품을 완성했다는 마지막 줄에서, ‘선생님과 손을 잡고’라는 표현이 따라왔다.

금요일 (12/12) – 좋아지는 듯해서 다행
금요일 알림장은 짧았다. 감기로 고생한 한 주였는데 좋아지는 듯해서 다행이라는 한 줄, 주말 잘 보내라는 짧은 한 줄. 두 줄이었다. ‘좋아지는 듯해서 다행’이라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 두 주 전 ‘거뜬히 이겨내리라 믿습니다’와 같은 자리에, 이번 주는 ‘다행’이라는 두 글자가 한 칸 더 부드럽게 자리하고 있었다.
퇴근하고 집에 돌아가 가방 안을 비웠다. 도시락통 하나, 수건 한 장, 그리고 신발 끝에 묻은 작은 자국. 한 주 사이에 거실 한쪽 약 봉투에 더 추가된 봉투는 없었다. 한 주의 마지막 평일을 그렇게 한 칸씩 정리하면서, 다음 주 어딘가에 작은 트리 한 칸이 자리할 자리를 잠깐 헤아려봤다.
한 주를 마치며

The second week of December began. On the last page of the previous week I had wished that no medicine time would have to sit at the bottom of any note again. This week, that wish was answered only halfway. Medicine times still showed up at the bottom of Monday’s and Tuesday’s notes, but from Wednesday onward, that small spot was empty again. The cold quietly faded one notch at a time as the week moved toward its end. Inside the same week, though, a couple of big new lines walked in elsewhere — Wednesday’s first role-play activity, and Thursday’s first Christmas tree. The first half of the week flowed through recovery, and the second half slowly opened into the colors of December. Lying down beside her, I wondered if the small spot in the corner of our living room — where the medicine pouch had sat — might soon be replaced by a tiny Christmas decoration.
Monday (12/8) – Winter picture cards and one more medicine line
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Monday. The note came in around 7:57 — later than usual. The first line said: “Her nose kept running all day, so we wiped it often and kept an eye on her.” Last week’s “wiped it many times” had walked up to this Monday’s first line.
The next line said they had talked about winter weather, looked through picture cards of winter activities, and tried picking matching pairs. I paused on “talked about winter weather.” The word “winter” had now taken its first spot inside a note.
The next line said she still needed the teacher’s hand, so they had walked her through the activity slowly together, but it had been touching to see her follow along with interest. I paused on “still needed the teacher’s hand.” Where the first line had always read “on her own” recently, this week, a softer phrase had taken that place. The last line: “Gave her medicine at 1:10 PM.” A medicine time was sitting at the bottom of the note again.
Tuesday (12/9) – A finger pointing at familiar pictures
Tuesday’s note arrived around 7:24. The first line said she had opened a folded picture book and stayed focused, looking through pictures of animals and fruits. “Folded picture book” — a new phrase in the notes.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “When she saw familiar pictures, she pointed at them with her finger to express herself.” Last week the same finger had pointed at a lion and a giraffe. This week, “familiar pictures” had become a bigger, broader unit. “Familiar” — a new word in the notes.
The next line said her nose had kept running, so they had wiped it often, and that although she had played well overall, she had been a little fussy sometimes when she wasn’t feeling great. I paused on “a little fussy sometimes.” “Fussy” was appearing in a note for the first time. While her body was moving along the curve of recovery, her expressions were quietly being written down in a different rhythm.
The next line said she had calmly explored toys with the teacher and finished the day well. The word “calmly” stayed with me. Where lines like “energetically” had often filled this spot, this week a different adverb had taken its place. The last line: “Gave her medicine at 1:10 PM,” in the same spot as yesterday’s last line.
Wednesday (12/10) – “Ding-dong” and her first role-play
Wednesday’s note arrived around 7:21. The first line said she had joined an activity as a “delivery driver” with the sensory teacher. “Delivery driver” — new in the notes. Her first role-play sat inside a single line.
The next line said she had loaded boxes onto a small cart and moved them around, focused on the task, and that when she pressed the doorbell and a “ding-dong” rang out, she had grown even more excited and continued the deliveries gleefully. “Ding-dong” was in quotation marks. Last week the quotation marks had held “appa.” This week, “ding-dong” had stepped into that same little spot.
The next line said even though this was her first role-play, she had followed along with curiosity, and that loading the boxes and moving them had been adorable. “Role-play” was new in the notes. Her hand, which had been holding tools and pointing at pictures, had taken one more step in — slipping briefly into the role of another person.
At the bottom, instead of a medicine line, there was a small announcement. “This is the second conference week. To protect the infants from colds, we will hold the meetings over the phone — please let us know when you’d be available.” The end of the term was quietly drawing closer. The bottom-of-note slot had been replaced this time, not by a medicine time, but by a small piece of school news.
Thursday (12/11) – Decorating a Christmas tree
Thursday’s note arrived around 7:20. The first line said they had done an art activity, decorating a Christmas tree. “Christmas tree” — five characters appearing in a note for the first time. The color of December had moved into the first line.
The next line said she had slowly colored a drawn tree with crayons, applied glue, and sprinkled shimmering colored sand on it as a way of expressing herself. “Colored sand” was new in the notes. The flow of color that had begun at the edge of autumn had moved, this week, up onto the tree.
The next line said she had done the glue part well, but the unfamiliar colored sand had made her pull her hand back. I paused on “pulled her hand back.” Two weeks earlier, on the textured board, the phrase had been “pulled her bottom back and hesitated.” This week, that hesitation had moved up — to her hand. The last line said the teacher had held her hand and finished the artwork together with her. “Held her hand and finished it together” had a softness to it.
And for the first time this week, the bottom line of the note had no medicine time at all.
Friday (12/12) – “Glad she’s getting better”
Friday’s note was short. One line said it had been a rough week with the cold, but thankfully she seemed to be getting better. Another wished us a good weekend. Just two lines. I paused on “glad she seems to be getting better.” Two weeks ago, “I trust she will get through this cold easily” had been the same kind of line. This week, it had softened one more notch — into the simple word “glad.”
After work I came home and emptied her bag. A lunchbox, a single towel, and one or two more tiny scuff marks on the toe of her sneakers. No new medicine packet had been added to the small spot in the corner of the living room. As I tidied the last weekday of the week one piece at a time, I quietly tried to imagine the spot a small tree might take inside our home next week.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where medicine times, role-play, and a Christmas tree all sat inside the same seven days, in turn. On Monday and Tuesday, a medicine time appeared at the bottom of each note. From Wednesday on, that spot stayed empty. On Tuesday, “the finger pointing at familiar pictures” arrived in a line. On Wednesday, the quotation marks “ding-dong” entered the notes for the first time. On Thursday, “Christmas tree” — five characters new to the notes — took the very first line. The first half of the week was the tail end of a cold; the second half was the colors of December walking in, one small step at a time.
The wish from last week — “let no medicine time appear at the bottom of any note” — was answered only halfway. Lying down beside her, I wished, quietly again, that next week no medicine time would have to appear at all, and that the first line might carry an even warmer color from on top of a tree.
