12월의 첫 주가 시작됐다. 지난주 마지막 페이지에 다음 주에는 체온이 알림장에 숫자로 더 적히지 않길 적었는데, 이번 주 월요일 알림장에 그 반대 답이 정확히 들어와 있었다. ‘체온이 38.1도로 열이 있었다’는 한 줄이었다. 지난주 37.7도였던 숫자가, 한 주 사이에 한 칸 더 올라가 있었다. 같은 주 화요일에는 가정보육 결정이 한 줄 더 따라왔고, 수요일은 통째로 결석이었다. 알림장의 마지막 줄에는 한 주 내내 약을 먹인 시간이 차례로 적혀 있었다. 한 칸의 사건이 한 주 전체를 덮은 한 주였다. 잠든 옆에 누워, 한 주가 그렇게 한 칸 다른 자리에 머물러 있을 때 부모가 할 수 있는 한두 가지가 어디까지인지 잠깐 헤아려봤다.
월요일 (12/1) – 38.1도가 적힌 첫 줄
월요일 출근버스 정류장에 7시 10분쯤 도착했다. 알림장은 6시 21분쯤 들어왔다. 평소보다 한참 이른 시간이었다. 처음 두 시간 동안 기분 좋게 여러 활동에 참여하며 즐겁게 놀았다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. 스스로 하고 싶은 놀이를 찾아 탐색하는 모습이 밝고 활기찼다는 다음 줄에서, ‘스스로 탐색하는’이라는 표현이 또 한 번 적혀 있었다. 한 주 전 ‘동물을 손가락으로 가리키는’ 줄과 같은 자리에서 이번 주 첫 줄로 옮겨와 있었다.
하지만 그 다음 줄에서 한 박자 다른 흐름이 들어왔다. ‘놀이 중간중간 자꾸 바닥에 누워 쉬려는 모습이 보여 혹시나 해서 체온을 확인해 보니 38.1도로 열이 있었다’는 한 줄이었다. 38.1도라는 숫자가 알림장에 적힌 게 처음이었다. 한 주 전 37.7도가 한 칸 위로 올라간 자리에 38.1도가 들어와 있었다.
평소와 다르게 힘이 조금 없어 보이고 편안한 자세를 찾으려는 모습에 마음이 많이 쓰였다는 다음 줄에서, ‘편안한 자세를 찾으려는’이라는 표현에 한참 멈췄다. ‘얼마나 힘들까 생각하니 선생님 마음도 함께 아프네요’라는 마지막 줄에서, ‘선생님 마음도 함께 아프네요’라는 표현이 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 그 한 줄에서, 어린이집 안에 같이 마음 써주는 사람이 있다는 게 한 칸 또렷해졌다.
점심을 먹다 그 한 줄을 다시 읽었다. 퇴근 시간에 한 번 더 읽었다. 그 사이에 회사 회의실 한쪽에서, 지금쯤 어떤 자세로 누워 있을지 짧게 그려봤다.
화요일 (12/2) – 약 시간과 가정보육 결정
화요일은 자정이 막 지난 새벽 0시 12분쯤 부모 메시지 칸에 한 줄을 짧게 남겼다. 약 시간을 1시 반 이후로 부탁드린다는 줄, 컨디션이 또 좋지 않거나 열이 있으면 바로 연락 달라는 짧은 한 줄이었다. 새벽에 적는 메시지가 한 달 만에 다시 같은 자리에 자리해 있었다.
알림장은 7시 26분쯤 들어왔다. 실내를 천천히 돌아다니며 놀잇감을 만져보거나 미끄럼틀을 타며 놀이 시간을 보냈다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. 평소와 달리 환하게 웃는 모습은 많이 보이지 않았고 전반적으로 활력이 조금 떨어져 보였다는 다음 줄에서, ‘환하게 웃는 모습은 많이 보이지 않았다’는 표현에 한참 멈췄다. 평소 알림장의 첫 줄 자리에 항상 등장하던 ‘환하게 웃는’이, 이번 주는 그 반대 박자로 들어와 있었다.
기침이 종종 있었고 콧물이 계속 흘러 코를 여러 번 닦아주었다는 다음 줄에서, ‘여러 번’이라는 세 글자가 평소보다 또렷하게 읽혔다. 열은 없었지만 컨디션이 좋지 않은 듯해 상태를 수시로 살펴보며 편안하게 지낼 수 있도록 도왔다는 줄, 점심은 비교적 잘 먹어주어 다행이었다는 줄, 마지막에 ‘약 2시 20분에 먹였다’는 짧은 한 줄. 그날 밤 11시 45분쯤 부모 메시지 칸에 한 줄을 더 남겼다. ‘내일 가정보육 하겠다’는 짧은 한 줄이었다. 두 줄로 결정되는 한 주의 한 칸이 그렇게 자리했다.
수요일 (12/3) – 가정보육
수요일은 어린이집을 쉬는 날이었다. 회사에 휴가를 짧게 쓰고 집에서 한쪽 거실에 작은 매트를 펴 두었다. 약을 시간 맞춰 한 번 먹였고, 그 뒤로 한 번 더 같은 자리에서 먹였다. 평소엔 알림장이 적던 자리에, 이번엔 거실 한쪽 매트 위 작은 어깨가 들숨과 날숨을 한 박자씩 쉬는 모습이 그대로 들어와 있었다.
오후가 되어서야 작은 입에서 짧게 ‘아빠’라는 두 글자가 한 번 들렸다. 한 주 전 알림장에 ‘표현’이라는 단어가 처음 들어왔는데, 이번 주는 그 표현이 집 거실 한쪽에서 두 글자로 한 번 더 자리했다.
목요일 (12/4) – 풍선과 매직과 약 한 번 더
목요일 알림장은 7시 31분쯤 들어왔다. 날씨가 많이 추워 오늘은 따뜻한 실내에서 즐겁게 놀이했다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. ‘많이 추워’라는 네 글자가 처음 등장했다. 가을 끝자락에서 시작된 ‘쌀쌀’이 한 달 사이에 ‘많이 추워’로 한 칸 더 깊어져 있었다.
허리에 풍선을 묶고 풍선을 치며 신나게 몸을 흔들어 보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘허리에 풍선을 묶고’라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 평소엔 손에 잡히던 놀잇감이 이번 주는 허리에 묶여 있는 자리로 한 칸 옮겨가 있었다. 풍선 위에 매직으로 끼적이기도 하고 스티커도 하나하나 붙이며 소근육을 사용하는 놀이도 함께 즐겼다는 다음 줄에서, ‘매직’이라는 두 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 두 주 전 뿅뿅이 붓이 들어온 자리에, 이번 주는 매직이 한 칸 더 자리하고 있었다.
몸을 움직이며 놀이하는 시간에도 앉아서 집중하는 놀이 시간에도 편안하게 참여했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘편안하게 참여했다’라는 표현이 따라왔다. 마지막 줄에 ‘약은 2시 30분에 먹였다’는 짧은 한 줄이 또 적혀 있었다. 알림장 마지막 줄 자리에 약 시간이 세 번째 자리하고 있었다.
금요일 (12/5) – 어제보다 밝은 한 줄
금요일 알림장은 7시 22분쯤 들어왔다. 어제보다는 밝은 표정으로 즐겁게 생활했다는 한 줄에 이어, 주말 잘 쉬고 아프지 않고 건강한 모습으로 만나길 바란다는 한 줄, 그리고 ‘약 1시 5분에 먹였다’는 짧은 한 줄. 세 줄이었다. ‘어제보다는’이라는 네 글자에 잠시 멈췄다. 한 주 전까지 비교 대상이 한 주 전 알림장이었는데, 이번 주는 그 비교 대상이 어제 한 줄로 한 칸 가까워져 있었다.
퇴근하고 집에 돌아가 가방 안을 비웠다. 도시락통 하나, 수건 한 장, 그리고 약 봉투 한 개. 거실 한쪽 약 봉투 자리에 같은 봉투가 또 한 개 더 자리해 있었다. 한 주 사이에 약 봉투가 한 칸씩 늘어가는 게 어른 입장에서 한구석 무거웠다.
한 주를 마치며
이번 주는 약 시간이 알림장 마지막 줄에 네 번 적힌 한 주였다. 월요일에는 38.1도라는 숫자가 알림장에 처음 적혔고, 화요일에는 콧물과 기침이 한 줄 안에 같이 들어왔고, 수요일은 가정보육으로 평일 한 칸이 통째로 비었고, 목요일에는 풍선과 매직이 같은 줄에 들어왔지만 마지막 줄에 약 시간이 한 번 더 적혔고, 금요일에는 ‘어제보다는’이라는 네 글자로 한 주가 닫혔다. 평일 다섯 칸 중 알림장이 들어온 자리가 네 칸이었는데, 그 네 칸 마지막에는 모두 약 시간이 적혀 있었다.
지난주 마지막 페이지에 빌었던 두 줄 중 한쪽은 한 칸 더 진해졌다. 잠든 옆에 누워, 다음 주에는 알림장 마지막 줄에 약 시간이 한 번도 적히지 않길, 그 자리에 평소 같은 한 줄 부탁이 다시 들어오길 잠깐 빌었다.

The first week of December began. On the last page of the previous week, I had wished that no more temperature numbers would have to appear inside a daycare note. This Monday, the opposite of that wish arrived in the very first line. “Her temperature was 38.1°C — she had a fever.” The 37.7°C from last week had stepped up one more notch. Inside the same week, a “we’ll keep her home” decision arrived as a separate line on Tuesday, and Wednesday was missed entirely. The last line of the note kept arriving, day after day, as the time at which she had been given her medicine. A single small event quietly covered the whole shape of the week. Lying down beside her, I tried to think through what exactly two parents can do, when the week stays in this kind of quiet corner.
Monday (12/1) – The first line with “38.1°C” in it
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Monday. The note came in around 6:21 — much earlier than usual. The first line said she had spent the first two hours happily, joining various activities. The next line said she had been bright and lively, exploring the play she wanted on her own. “Exploring on her own” was sitting where “pointing at the animals with her finger” had been in last week’s first line.
But the next line broke the rhythm. “In the middle of play, she kept lying down to rest, so the teachers checked her temperature just in case — 38.1°C, she had a fever.” A temperature of 38.1°C had never been written in a note before. Where 37.7°C had stepped up by one notch last week, now 38.1°C sat in its place.
The next line said she looked unusually low on energy, and that the way she kept trying to find a comfortable position was hard to watch. I stopped for a long time on “trying to find a comfortable position.” The last line read: “Thinking about how hard it must be on her, our hearts ache too.” A line where the teacher writes that her heart aches along with us had never appeared in the notes before. Reading that line, the fact that there is someone inside the daycare quietly caring with us became one notch more visible.
I read that line again over lunch. I read it once more on the way home. In the meantime, in a corner of an office meeting room, I quietly tried to picture what kind of small posture she might be lying in just then.
Tuesday (12/2) – Medicine times, and a “we’ll keep her home tomorrow”
Tuesday started with a short note I left in the parent message box at 12:12 AM. One line asked the teacher to please give the medicine after 1:30. Another asked to please contact us right away if her condition turned again, or if she had a fever. A late-night message had settled back into the same spot, one month after the last one.
The note arrived around 7:26. The first line said she had spent the play time slowly walking around indoors, touching toys and sliding down the slide. The next line said unlike usual, she hadn’t shown her bright laugh much, and that overall she had looked a little low on energy. I stayed long on “hadn’t shown her bright laugh much.” Where “bright laugh” usually sat in the first line of a note, this week the opposite rhythm had quietly taken its place.
The next line said she had been coughing here and there, and her nose had run continuously, so they had wiped it many times. The phrase “many times” stood out more clearly than usual. The line after — that her fever was gone but her condition still seemed off, so they had watched her closely and helped her stay comfortable. Another line — that she had eaten lunch relatively well, which was a relief. The last line: “Gave her medicine at 2:20 PM.” Later that night, around 11:45 PM, I left another short line in the parent message box: “We’ll keep her home tomorrow.” A small piece of the week was being decided in two short messages.
Wednesday (12/3) – Keeping her home
Wednesday was a day at home. I took a short half day from work, laid out a small mat in one corner of the living room. I gave her the medicine on time, and then once more at the next interval. In the place where the daycare note usually arrived, what arrived this time was the slow, steady rhythm of her small shoulders breathing in and out on the mat.
It wasn’t until the afternoon that a small voice said the two syllables, just once: “Appa.” A week ago, the word “express” had walked into the notes for the first time. This week, that same expressing had quietly settled into one corner of our living room as two short syllables.
Thursday (12/4) – A balloon, a marker, and one more medicine line
Thursday’s note arrived around 7:31. The first line said the weather was very cold today, so they had played warmly indoors. “Very cold” — new in the notes. The “chilly” that had first appeared at the edge of autumn had deepened, in a month, into “very cold.”
The next line said she had a balloon tied to her waist and had played by hitting it, shaking her body happily. I paused on “tied a balloon to her waist.” A toy that usually sat in her hand had moved this week to her waist instead. The line after said she had also scribbled on the balloon with a marker and pressed stickers on, using her fine motor skills. “Marker” — new in the notes. Where “ppyong-ppyong brush” had landed two weeks earlier, this week “marker” took one step further in.
The next line said she had calmly joined both the physical play and the seated, focused play. “Joined calmly” was new. The last line: “Gave her medicine at 2:30 PM.” A medicine time was sitting at the bottom of the note for the third time this week.
Friday (12/5) – “Brighter than yesterday”
Friday’s note arrived around 7:22. The first line said she had spent the day happily, with a brighter expression than yesterday. The next line wished us a restful weekend and hoped to see her back without illness on Monday. The last line: “Gave her medicine at 1:05 PM.” Three lines in total. I stayed on the phrase “than yesterday.” Until last week, the comparison in these notes had been “last week vs. this week.” This week, the comparison had moved one step closer — yesterday vs. today.
After work I came home and emptied her bag. A lunchbox, a single towel, and one medicine packet. The medicine pouch in the corner of the living room had one more packet next to it now. The fact that the small pouch was growing by one packet a week sat heavily in one corner of my chest as a parent.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where a medicine time appeared at the bottom of a daycare note four separate times. On Monday, “38.1°C” was written for the first time. On Tuesday, “runny nose” and “coughing” sat inside the same line. On Wednesday, the whole weekday was missing — kept home. On Thursday, “balloon” and “marker” shared a line, but a medicine time still sat at the bottom. On Friday, the week closed with “brighter than yesterday.” Out of five possible weekday lines, four arrived — and every one of them ended with a recorded medicine time.
Of the two wishes I had carried in from last week, one had quietly deepened by another notch. Lying down beside her, I wished, quietly again, that next week no medicine time would have to sit at the bottom of any note, and that the usual kind of small request would settle back into that spot instead.
