월요일 출근버스 정류장에 7시 10분쯤 도착했다. 알림장은 7시 13분쯤 들어왔다. 스크래치 끼적이기 활동을 했다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. ‘스크래치’라는 네 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 까만 종이를 긁자 알록달록한 선들이 나타나는 것을 보며 신기해하고 즐거워했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘알록달록한 선들이 나타나는’이라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 한 칸 안에서 시작된 동작이 색이 펼쳐지는 결과로 바뀌어 나오는 흐름이, 한 줄 안에 두 박자로 적혀 있었다. 한 주 전 로션 위에서의 두 박자가, 이번 주는 까만 종이 위로 한 칸 옮겨가 있었다.

화요일 알림장은 7시 29분쯤 들어왔다. 동물 모형 놀이를 하며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. 다음 줄에서 ‘선생님이 사자, 기린 등 동물 이름을 하나씩 알려주자, 알아듣는 듯한 표정으로 해당 동물을 손가락으로 가리키며 반응했다’는 한 줄을 봤다. 출근버스에서 그 한 줄을 두 번 읽었다.
‘알아듣는 듯한’이라는 표현이 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 두 주 전 ‘선생님의 말을 이해하고’에서, 이번 주는 그 이해의 대상이 사물 이름으로 한 칸 더 구체화되어 있었다. 사자라는 이름을 듣고 사자를 손가락으로 가리키는 동작이 같은 한 줄 안에 같이 들어와 있다는 게, 한 칸 큰 변화처럼 읽혔다. ‘손가락으로 가리키며’라는 표현도 알림장에 처음이었다.

수요일 (11/26) – 촉감판 위 한 발
수요일 알림장은 7시 27분쯤 들어왔다. 오감 선생님과 함께 귀로를 두드리며 동요의 리듬에 맞춰 박자를 세어보았다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. ‘귀로’라는 두 글자에 잠시 멈췄다. 한 주 전 작은북, 두 주 전 마라카스, 그 앞 핸드벨. 손에 잡히는 악기가 한 주에 한 칸씩 다른 도구로 옮겨오고 있었다.
선생님이 귀로를 치는 모습을 따라 하려는 듯 바라보는 표정만으로도 즐거움이 느껴졌다는 다음 줄에서, ‘따라 하려는 듯’이라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 두 주 전 ‘복습하듯이’에 이어, 이번 주는 ‘따라 하려는 듯’이라는 한 칸 더 구체적인 의도가 적혀 있었다.
가장 길게 멈췄던 줄은 그 다음이었다. ‘촉감판 위를 걸어보기에도 도전했어요. 처음엔 낯설었는지 엉덩이를 쏙 빼며 올라가기를 망설였지만, 조금 시간을 주자 살짝 한 발 올려보며 용기 있게 시도하더라고요’라는 한 줄이었다. ‘망설였지만’과 ‘용기 있게 시도’라는 두 표현이 같은 한 줄 안에 들어와 있는 게 처음이었다.

스스로 마음에 드는 색을 고르고 판 위에 톡톡 묻혀 번지는 물감을 바라보며 신기해했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘스스로 마음에 드는 색을 고르고’라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. ‘마음에 드는’이라는 다섯 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 한 칸의 색 자체에 선호가 생긴다는 표현이 알림장에 처음 적힌 줄이었다. 색이 퍼지는 순간마다 눈을 반짝이며 집중하는 모습이 예뻤다는 다음 줄에서, ‘색이 퍼지는 순간마다’라는 표현이 따라왔다.
이후에는 베이비 마사지 시간을 가졌다는 다음 줄에서, ‘베이비 마사지’라는 다섯 글자에 잠시 멈췄다. 세 달 전 베이비오일 마사지로 낮잠을 잘 잤다는 한 줄이 있었는데, 이번 주는 그 마사지가 정식 일정으로 한 칸 들어와 있었다. 천연 오일을 살짝 손에 덜어 향도 맡아보고, 팔다리와 배를 부드럽게 마사지해 주자 한층 더 편안해하며 몸을 맡겨주었다는 다음 줄에서, ‘몸을 맡겨주었다’라는 표현이 알림장에 처음 등장했다.
금요일 (11/28) – 차가운 바람과 짧은 인사
금요일 알림장은 7시 38분쯤 들어왔다. 밝고 열정 넘치는 에너지로 한 주도 즐겁고 행복하게 지나갔다는 한 줄에 이어, ‘바람이 차갑습니다. 감기 조심하시고 즐거운 주말 보내세요’라는 한 줄이 따라왔다. ‘감기 조심’이라는 네 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 한 주 전 ‘감기도 이겨내리라 믿습니다’와 같은 자리에, 이번 주는 어른들에게 한 줄 더 향한 표현이 적혀 있었다.
퇴근하고 집에 돌아가 가방 안을 비웠다. 도시락통 하나, 수건 한 장, 그리고 신발 끝에 묻은 작은 자국이 또 한두 개. 거실 한쪽 약 봉투는 한 주 더 같은 자리에 있었다. 다음 주에는 그 봉투 자리가 한 칸 다시 비어 있길, 잠시 그렇게 생각했다.
한 주를 마치며

The fourth week of November began. On the last page of the previous week I had wished the barley sprout would grow another notch taller, and that the medicine pouch in the corner of the living room would stay empty for one more week. This week, those two lines did not receive their answer in the same direction. On Monday, the last line of the note said her temperature was 37.7°C and 37.4°C — a little high, and they were watching her. The medicine pouch in the living room took its spot again. But inside the same week, another kind of line walked in on Tuesday. The note said when the teacher named animals one by one, WooRin had looked as if she understood, and pointed at the matching animal with her finger. The fact that a heard word and a pointing finger were sitting inside the same line felt like a real, larger shift in one week. Lying down beside her, it became clearer once more: this was a week that had carried both a medicine line and a pointing-finger line, side by side.
Monday (11/24) – Scratch art and a slightly high temperature
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Monday. The note arrived around 7:13. The first line said she had tried a scratch-art doodling activity. “Scratch art” — a new word in the notes. The next line said she had been amazed and delighted to watch colorful lines appear as she scratched the black paper. I paused on “colorful lines appearing.” A motion that started on a single dark square turned into a result that spread into colors, all written into one line in two beats. A week ago that same two-beat motion had been on a layer of lotion; this week it had moved across to a sheet of black paper.
The line I stopped at the longest came next. “Before nap time, her temperature was 37.7°C and 37.4°C — a little high, so we are keeping a close watch.” A temperature had never been written as a number inside a note before. I read it again over lunch. The next line — that she had still eaten well, played happily, and looked lively — did cover that line with a small layer of relief, but on the commuter bus the two numbers came back to me one more time.
The medicine pouch that had taken a spot in the living room last week was being told, in this line, that it needed to stay in the same spot for one more week.
Tuesday (11/25) – A small finger pointing at a lion and a giraffe
Tuesday’s note arrived around 7:29. The first line said she had spent a fun time with an animal figurine activity. The next line said: “When the teacher named animals one by one — lion, giraffe, and so on — WooRin looked as if she understood, and pointed at the matching animal with her finger.” I read that line twice on the bus.
“Looked as if she understood” — a new phrase in the notes. Two weeks ago the line had been “understood the teacher’s words.” This week, the object of that understanding had moved one notch further, into the names of specific things. The fact that a heard name and a pointing motion now sat inside the same line felt like a real, bigger shift in one week. “Pointing with her finger” was also new on the page.
The next line said her ability to understand and to express was steadily growing, and how impressive it was. The phrase “ability to express” stayed with me. The word “express” had not been in a note before. The last line said the teachers would continue to guide her well. That single sentence carried the small, quiet sign of the daycare moving one notch closer to teaching with intent.
Wednesday (11/26) – One small foot on the textured board
Wednesday’s note arrived around 7:27. The first line said she had spent time with the sensory teacher tapping a guiro to count beats along to a children’s song. The word “guiro” stopped me. A week ago — small drum; two weeks ago — maraca; before that — handbell. The instrument in her hand was moving from one tool to another, week after week.
The next line said the joy in her face — even just while she watched the teacher tap the guiro, as if she wanted to imitate it — had been clearly felt. I paused on “as if she wanted to imitate it.” Two weeks earlier the phrase had been “as if she were reviewing.” This week, that same direction had moved one step closer into “wanted to imitate.”
The line I stopped at the longest came next. “She also tried walking on top of a textured sensory board. At first the surface seemed unfamiliar to her, so she pulled her bottom back and hesitated to step on. After a little time, she lifted one foot up — bravely tried it.” The phrases “hesitated” and “bravely tried” sitting inside the same single line was new.
A short video was attached below. I watched it once at lunch, and once more before going into a meeting. It was a brief clip — her small foot paused at the edge of the textured board, then quietly stepped one notch up. The way the moment of hesitation sat inside the video as a clear beat of its own was a different rhythm than last week’s “climbing the stairs on her own.”
Thursday (11/27) – Stencil play and a baby massage
Thursday’s note arrived around 7:26. The first line said she had tried a stencil activity, dabbing paint onto cutouts of animal shapes. “Stencil” — a new word in the notes.
The next line said she had chosen the colors she liked herself and dabbed them onto the cutouts, then watched the paint bleed across the page with amazement. I paused on “chose the colors she liked herself.” “She liked” — a phrase appearing in a note for the first time. The idea that a single color could carry her own preference now had a line of its own. The line after said the way she lit up at every moment the color spread had been beautiful.
The next line said they had also had a baby massage session. “Baby massage” stopped me. Three months ago, the line had been a single baby-oil massage that had helped her fall asleep before nap time. This week, that same massage had become a scheduled part of the day. The next line said she had touched the natural oil to smell it, and as her arms, legs, and belly were gently massaged, she had relaxed even more and let her body be held. “Let her body be held” — also new in the notes.
Friday (11/28) – A cold wind and a short greeting
Friday’s note arrived around 7:38. One line said another bright, energetic week had passed happily. The next line said: “The wind is cold today. Please take care not to catch a cold, and have a nice weekend.” “Take care not to catch a cold” was a new phrase in the notes. Where last week the same spot had read “I trust she will get through this cold easily too,” this week the note pointed one line outward toward the grown-ups.
After work I came home and emptied the bag. A lunchbox, a single towel, and one or two more tiny scuff marks on the toe of her sneakers. The medicine pouch was still in the same corner of the living room, one week longer. Maybe next week, I thought, that small spot will sit empty again.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where a medicine line and a finger-pointing line lived inside the same seven days. On Monday, a temperature was written as a number in a note for the first time. On Tuesday, the names “lion” and “giraffe” and the finger that pointed at them sat inside the same line. On Wednesday, “hesitated” and “bravely tried” sat together inside the same line. On Thursday, “chose the colors she liked herself” and “baby massage” arrived in turn. On Friday, “take care not to catch a cold” closed the week.
Last week’s wish — “let the barley sprout grow another notch, let the medicine pouch sit empty one more week” — was only half answered. The barley sprout’s spot did not appear in this week’s notes, and the medicine pouch settled back into its corner of the living room. Lying down beside her, I quietly wished that next week no temperature numbers would have to be written inside a daycare note, and that her small finger would point at one more new kind of animal after the lion and the giraffe.
