10월의 두 번째 주가 시작됐다. 지난주 마지막 페이지에 알림장이 한 주 평일 다섯 번 다시 차곡차곡 채워지길 적었는데, 이번 주는 그 다섯 줄이 정확히 차례로 들어온 한 주였다. 그리고 그 다섯 줄 중 한 줄에, 이전까지 알림장에서 한 번도 본 적 없는 작은 부탁 한 줄이 함께 들어와 있었다. ‘신발이 필요해 보입니다’라는 한 줄이었다. 그 한 줄을 출근버스 안에서 본 순간, 이번 주가 알림장 다섯 줄을 채우는 것 이상의 한 주라는 게 한 번에 들어왔다. 토요일 마트 카트에 작은 도시락통을 담은 게 두 달 전이었는데, 이번 주말에는 그 옆에 작은 신발 한 켤레가 함께 담길 차례였다. 잠든 옆에 누워, 다음 주말 마트 카트 안 풍경을 한 번 그려봤다.
월요일 (10/13) – 한층 더 자란 걸음과 가을 열매
월요일 출근버스 정류장에 7시 10분쯤 도착했다. 알림장은 7시 45분쯤 들어왔다. 첫 줄에서 ‘한층 더 자란 모습으로 등원했다’는 표현이 다시 등장했다. 지난주 금요일 첫 줄에 처음 등장했던 그 표현이, 한 주 만에 다시 한 줄 더 자리하고 있었다.
이제 걷는 모습이 훨씬 더 안정적이고 자연스러워졌다는 다음 줄에서, ‘안정적이고 자연스럽다’는 두 표현이 한 줄에 같이 들어와 있는 게 처음이었다. 한 주 전 ‘한층 더 자란 모습’이 다소 추상적인 표현이었다면, 이번 주는 그 표현이 ‘안정적’, ‘자연스럽다’라는 두 구체 단어로 한 칸 더 내려와 있었다. 넘어지고 일어나 걷기를 반복하면서 교실 이곳저곳을 열심히 탐색했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘이곳저곳’이라는 네 글자에 잠시 멈췄다. 걸음이 한 자리에 머물지 않고 공간 전체를 횡단하는 단위로 늘어나 있었다.
가을 열매에 대해 알아보고, 다양한 열매 이름을 말로 들어보고 끼적이기도 해 보았다는 다음 줄에 이어, 사과 배 감 솔방울 그림을 보며 색연필을 쥐고 종이에 끼적이면서 열매를 표현해 보는 시간을 가졌다는 줄이 따라왔다. 사과, 배, 감, 솔방울. 단어 네 개가 한 줄 안에 차례로 들어와 있는 게, 알림장에서 흔치 않은 박자였다. 색연필을 손에 꼭 쥐고 선을 그리거나 콩콩 점을 찍으며 집중하는 모습이 예뻤다는 마지막 줄에서, ‘꼭 쥐고’라는 세 글자가 길게 따라왔다. 한 달 전 ‘슥슥’이었던 동작이 한 달 사이에 ‘꼭 쥐고 콩콩 점을 찍는’ 두 박자로 펼쳐져 있었다.
화요일 (10/14) – 보자기 뒤집어쓴 까꿍놀이
화요일 알림장은 7시 29분쯤 들어왔다. 까꿍놀이에 푹 빠졌다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. ‘푹 빠졌다’는 표현은 알림장에 자주 등장하던 표현이긴 했는데, 그 뒤로 따라온 줄이 평소와 박자가 달랐다. 보자기를 머리에 쏙 뒤집어쓰고 먼저 다가와 놀자고 했다는 한 줄이었다. ‘먼저 다가와’라는 네 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다.
한 주 전 사회성이라는 단어가 알림장에 처음 들어왔는데, 이번 주는 그 사회성이 ‘먼저 다가와’라는 더 구체적인 동작으로 한 칸 더 내려와 있었다. 친구와 함께 까꿍놀이를 하며 웃는 모습이 사랑스러웠다는 다음 줄에 이어, 요즘 친구에게 관심이 많아졌고 장난감을 하나하나 가져다주며 친구를 챙기는 모습이 다정하다는 줄이 따라왔다. ‘친구를 챙기는’이라는 표현이 알림장에 처음이었다.
점심을 먹다 사진을 잠깐 넘기다, 작은 보자기 끝이 어깨까지 내려와 있는 한 장에서 한참 머물렀다. 출근버스에서 한 번 더 그 줄을 읽었다. ‘먼저 다가와’와 ‘친구를 챙기는’이 같은 한 주 안에 들어와 있다는 게, 한 칸씩 두 번 옮겨간 큰 변화처럼 읽혔다.
수요일 (10/15) – “신발이 필요해 보입니다”
수요일 알림장은 7시 20분쯤 들어왔다. 바깥놀이 시간에 정말 신이 났다는 첫 줄에 이어, 밖으로 나가자마자 즐거운 듯 소리를 내며 웃고 활짝 웃는 얼굴이 예뻤다는 줄이 따라왔다. 말 모형도 타보고 열심히 걸어 다니며 활동적인 시간을 보냈다는 다음 줄에서, ‘활동적’이라는 세 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다.
가장 길게 멈췄던 줄은 그 다음이었다. ‘바깥활동을 할 때 좀 더 안전하고 편하게 놀 수 있도록 신발이 필요해 보입니다’라는 한 줄이었다. 그 줄을 두 번 읽었다. 알림장에서 ‘필요해 보입니다’라는 표현이 등장한 게 처음이었다. 두 달 전까지 가방 안에 도시락통이 새로 한 칸 들어왔는데, 이번 주에는 가방 옆에 작은 신발 한 켤레가 한 칸 더 자리할 차례였다.
영상 한 개가 그 아래 첨부돼 있었다. 점심시간에 한 번, 회의 들어가기 전 자리에서 한 번 더 봤다. 양말 신은 발이 풀밭 위에서 한 발씩 옮겨가는 짧은 컷이었다. 그 발에 다음 주부터 작은 운동화가 한 켤레 신겨질 거라는 한 줄이, 그 영상 위에 한 칸 더 올라와 있는 듯한 느낌이었다. 퇴근 후 집에 돌아가 잠든 옆에 앉아 그 영상을 한 번 더 봤다. 토요일 마트 카트 안에 두 켤레쯤 들고 비교해 봐야겠다고 잠깐 생각했다.
목요일 (10/16) – 앞치마와 햄버거, 그리고 미끄럼
목요일 알림장은 7시 32분쯤 들어왔다. 귀여운 앞치마를 입고 햄버거 만들기에 도전했다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. ‘앞치마’와 ‘햄버거 만들기’라는 두 단어가 같은 한 줄에 들어와 있는 게 처음이었다. 어린이집에서 햄버거를 만드는 활동을 한다는 자체가 어색하면서도 다행스러운 한 줄이기도 했다.
재료들을 하나하나 만져보며 살펴보다가 치즈를 들고는 정말 맛있다는 듯이 냠냠 열심히 먹는 모습이 사랑스러웠다는 다음 줄에서 짧게 웃었다. 화요일에 ‘먼저 다가와’ 보자기를 뒤집어쓰던 그 손이, 이번 줄에는 치즈를 들고 입으로 가져가는 손으로 적혀 있었다. 같은 손이 한 주 사이에 사회성과 식욕이라는 두 방향으로 따로따로 자라고 있었다.
바깥놀이 시간에는 놀이터로 나가 또박또박 걸어보기도 하고 미끄럼도 올라가서 타보며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다는 다음 줄에서, ‘미끄럼도 올라가서 타보며’라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 두 주 전 ‘미끄럼틀을 혼자서 올라가려는 시도’라는 표현이 있었는데, 이번 주는 그 시도가 ‘올라가서 타보며’라는 완성된 동작으로 한 칸 더 들어와 있었다. 시도라는 단어가 한 주 사이에 동작 자체로 옷을 갈아입고 있었다. 마지막 줄에 ‘점점 더 큰아이 같아지는 하린이’라는 표현이 들어와 있었다. ‘큰아이’라는 세 글자가 알림장에 등장한 게 처음이었다.
금요일 (10/17) – 가을 나들이와 짧은 인사
금요일 알림장은 짧았다. 솔솔 부는 바람에 가을 나들이 하기 좋은 날씨라는 한 줄, 주말 잘 보내라는 한 줄, 그리고 수건 보내달라는 한 줄. 세 줄이었다. 세 줄밖에 안 되는데도, ‘가을 나들이’라는 네 글자가 따로 또렷하게 읽혔다. 한복으로 시작했던 한 달 전 가을이, 이번 주는 나들이라는 단어로 한 칸 더 가까이 와 있었다.
퇴근하고 집에 돌아가 가방 안을 비웠다. 도시락통 하나, 빈 수건 한 장, 그리고 양말 한 켤레가 나왔다. 한 주의 마지막 평일을 그렇게 한 칸씩 정리하면서, 이번 주 수요일의 그 한 줄을 한 번 더 떠올렸다. 양말 옆에 신발 한 켤레가 들어올 자리가 비어 있었다.
한 주를 마치며

한 주 사이에 새 단어들이 차곡차곡 들어왔고, 그 중 한 줄은 다음 주말 마트 카트 안 풍경을 한 칸 바꿔놓을 한 줄이었다. 잠든 옆에 누워, 다음 주에는 작은 운동화 한 켤레가 가방 옆에 한 칸 자리하길, 그 신발 안에서 미끄럼 위로 한 칸 더 올라가는 줄이 들어오길 잠깐 빌었다.

The second week of October began. On the last page of the previous week I had wished that the daycare notes would fill back in across all five weekdays. This week the lines arrived exactly that way, one per day. And inside one of those five lines, a small request showed up — a kind of line I had never seen in a note before. “It looks like she needs shoes.” Reading that single sentence on the commuter bus made it clear at once that this was more than just a week of five-line notes. Two months ago, a tiny lunchbox had landed inside the grocery cart for the first time. This weekend, a small pair of shoes was scheduled to land next to it. Lying next to her, I quietly pictured what the Saturday grocery cart was about to look like.
Monday (10/13) – Steadier steps and autumn fruits
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Monday morning. The note arrived around 7:45. The first line had the phrase “she came in looking visibly more grown up” — the same phrase that had first appeared in last Friday’s opening line. In one week, that phrase had taken its place inside the page a second time.
The next line said her walking had now become much more stable and natural. Having both “stable” and “natural” sit inside the same line was new. A week earlier, “visibly more grown up” had been a more abstract phrase; this week the same idea had stepped down into two more concrete words. The next line said she had fallen and gotten up over and over, exploring “this corner and that corner” of the classroom. “This corner and that corner” stayed with me. Her walking had stopped being a small spot in one place and become a unit that crossed an entire room.
The next line said the class had explored autumn fruits, listened to their names spoken aloud, and tried doodling them out. The line after said she had looked at pictures of apples, pears, persimmons, and pinecones, held a crayon, and traced fruits onto paper. Four words in a row — apple, pear, persimmon, pinecone — sitting inside one line was a beat I hadn’t seen in the notes before. The last line said she had held the crayon firmly, drawing lines and tapping small dots, and looked beautiful in her focus. “Holding it firmly” stayed with me. The “quick little strokes” from a month ago had grown, in a month, into “holding it firmly” plus “tapping small dots” — two beats inside the same hand.
Tuesday (10/14) – Peekaboo under a small cloth
Tuesday’s note arrived around 7:29. The first line said she had become absorbed in peekaboo today. “Absorbed in” was a phrase that had appeared often in the notes before, but the line that followed had a different rhythm. It said she had pulled a small cloth over her head and then come over to invite a friend to play. “Come over [first]” was new in the notes.
A week ago, “sociability” had appeared in the notes for the first time. This week, that sociability had stepped down into the much more concrete motion of “coming over first.” The next line said she and the friend had laughed together as they played peekaboo, and how lovely it had been. The line after said she had grown more interested in friends lately, that she would carry toys over one by one to look after them — how sweet she had been. “Looking after a friend” was also new.
Over lunch I flipped through the photos, and stayed for a long time on one picture where the edge of a small cloth was slipping down to her shoulder. On the bus home I read that line again. “Coming over first” and “looking after a friend” appearing inside the same week felt like two small but real steps in the same direction.
Wednesday (10/15) – “It looks like she needs shoes.”
Wednesday’s note arrived around 7:20. The first line said outdoor play time had really lifted her up that day. The next line said she had laughed and made happy little sounds the moment she went outside, that her broad smile had been beautiful. The line after said she had ridden a horse-shaped toy and walked around energetically, spending a very active time. “Active” was a new word in the notes.
The line I stayed with the longest came next. “It looks like she could use a pair of shoes so she can play more safely and comfortably outdoors.” I read it twice. A phrase like “she could use” had never appeared in a daycare note before. Two months ago, a lunchbox had taken a new spot inside the bag. This week, a small pair of shoes was about to take a new spot next to the bag.
A short video was attached below. I watched it once at lunch, and once more before going into a meeting. It was a brief clip of her feet, in their socks, stepping one at a time on the grass. The line that those feet would be inside their first little sneakers from the coming week sat almost on top of the video. Back home, I watched it once more sitting next to her while she slept. I made a small note in my head to bring two pairs into the cart on Saturday to compare.
Thursday (10/16) – An apron, a hamburger, and the slide
Thursday’s note arrived around 7:32. The first line said she had put on a cute little apron and tried making a hamburger. “Apron” and “making a hamburger” sitting in the same line was new. The fact that they were even doing a hamburger activity at daycare felt both a little surprising and a little reassuring.
The next line said she had touched all the ingredients one by one to inspect them, then held up the cheese as if it tasted truly delicious and gone “yum-yum,” eating it eagerly, how lovely it had been. I smiled. The same hand that had pulled a cloth over her head on Tuesday and “come over first” was now, in this line, holding up cheese and bringing it to her mouth. The same hand was quietly growing in two different directions in one week — sociability on one side and appetite on the other.
The next line said during outdoor play she had walked steadily on the playground and even climbed up to ride down the slide. I paused on “climbed up and rode down.” Two weeks earlier, the line had been “trying to climb the slide on her own.” This week, the “trying” had quietly grown into the completed action of climbing up and riding down. The last line said she was becoming more and more like a “big kid” every day. “Big kid” was a phrase appearing in a note for the first time.
Friday (10/17) – An autumn outing greeting
Friday’s note was short. One line said the gently blowing wind made it good weather for an autumn outing. Another wished us a good weekend. The last asked us to send a towel. Three lines in total. Even so, the phrase “autumn outing” stood out very clearly. The autumn that had started a month ago in a hanbok now sat one notch closer in a line about an outing.
After work I came home and emptied her bag. A lunchbox, an empty towel, and a single pair of socks came out one at a time. As I tidied up the last weekday of the week, I went back once more to Wednesday’s line. Next to the socks, the spot where a pair of shoes would soon settle was still quietly empty.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where five daycare lines arrived in turn. On Monday her walking stepped down into “stable” and “natural.” On Tuesday her sociability moved another step into “coming over first” and “looking after a friend.” On Wednesday the line “It looks like she needs shoes” appeared in the notes for the first time. On Thursday the slide moved from “trying to climb on her own” into the completed action of “climbing up and riding down.” On Friday the words “autumn outing” sat quietly inside a short three-line note.
Through the week, new words settled in one after another, and one of those lines was about to change the picture inside the Saturday grocery cart. Lying next to her, I wished that next week a small pair of sneakers would find its place beside her bag, and that another line — about climbing one step higher up the slide inside those shoes — would arrive in the notes.
