10월의 첫 주가 시작됐다. 지난주 마지막 페이지에 회복이 한 칸 더 또렷해지길, 한복 사진 옆에 새 한 줄이 한 칸 더 들어오길 적었는데, 이번 주는 그 두 바람이 같은 한 줄 안에서 답을 받은 한 주였다. 단, 그 답은 금요일 한 줄로 한 번에 들어왔다. 월요일부터 목요일까지는 추석 연휴와 한글날로 어린이집이 닫혀 있었고, 나흘 가까이 가족들과 함께 보낸 시간을 안고 등원한 금요일이 그 답이 적힌 자리였다. 연휴 동안 부모님 댁에 다녀왔고, 거실에서 한복을 한 번 더 입어 보여드렸고, 평일에 같이 살지 않는 설이와 우리도 짧게 한 번씩 만났다. 잠든 옆에 누워, 연휴 동안 작은 어깨가 한 칸 더 자랐는지 한 번 더 더듬어봤다.
월요일 ~ 목요일 (10/6~10/9) – 추석 연휴와 한글날
이 네 평일은 어린이집이 닫힌 날이었다. 월요일 정류장에 가지 않은 아침은 오랜만이었다. 알림장 칸을 한 번 열어봤다가, 추석 연휴라는 걸 다시 떠올리며 닫았다. 가방을 메지 않고 거실에 앉아 한복 사진을 한 번 더 들여다본 아침이었다.
연휴 동안 부모님 댁 거실에서 작은 발이 한 칸 더 익숙해진 자리가 있었다. 처음엔 익숙하지 않은 바닥에서 두세 걸음만 떼다가 손을 한 번씩 잡았는데, 둘째 날부터는 부모님 옆에 가까이 가서 손을 내밀면 그 손을 잡고 거실 한 바퀴를 천천히 도는 모습이 보였다. 한 주 전 가정에서 다섯 발자국이 일곱 발자국으로 늘어났다는 한 줄이 있었는데, 연휴 동안 그 줄이 부모님 댁 거실 한 바퀴라는 단위로 한 칸 더 늘어나 있었다.
저녁에는 한복을 한 번 더 입어 보여드렸다. 한 번도 본 적 없는 작은 한복 모습에 부모님 두 분 모두 한참 사진을 찍어 가셨다. 그 사이에 강아지 설이와 고양이 우리가 거실 한쪽에서 천천히 다가왔다 멀어졌다 하기를 몇 번 반복했다. 평일에 같이 살지 않는 두 친구를 짧게 한 번씩 쓰다듬고 온 게, 한 주의 한 칸을 따뜻하게 덮어 주었다.
금요일 (10/10) – 흔들흔들과 한층 더 자란 모습
금요일 출근버스 정류장에 7시 10분쯤 도착했다. 알림장은 7시 21분쯤 들어왔다. 한 주 만에 처음 받는 한 줄이었다. 첫 줄에서 ‘추석 연휴를 잘 보내고 온 하린이는 한층 더 자란 모습으로 등원했다’는 한 줄을 봤다. ‘한층 더 자란 모습’이라는 표현이 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 한 주 전 ‘천천히 회복 중’이라는 다섯 글자가 적혀 있던 자리에, 이번 주는 ‘한층 더 자란 모습’이 한 칸 더 위로 올라가 있었다.
가족들의 사랑을 듬뿍 받고 단단해지고 똑똑해진 모습을 보여준다는 다음 줄에서, ‘단단해지고’라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 한 단어 안에 회복이라는 호와 성장이라는 호가 같이 들어와 있는 표현이었다. 지난주 마지막 페이지에 빌었던 ‘회복이 한 칸 더 또렷해지길’이 이번 주 첫 줄에서 답을 받았다는 게, 출근버스 안에서 한 번 더 또렷해졌다.
스스로 흔들 말에 올라타고 내리는 모습을 보여주며 놀라운 성장과 자신감을 보여주었다는 줄이 따라왔다. ‘스스로 올라타고 내린다’는 표현이 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 한 주 전 흔들 말 위에 ‘혼자’라는 단어가 한 칸 들어와 있었는데, 이번 주는 그 위에 올라타는 동작과 내리는 동작이 한 줄 안에 같이 들어와 있었다. 한 줄 안에 동작이 두 박자로 적혀 있다는 게, 평소 같은 알림장과는 다른 호흡이었다.
흔들 말을 능숙하게 다루며 즐겁게 ‘흔들흔들’ 놀이를 이어간다는 다음 줄에서, ‘흔들흔들’이라는 의성어가 한 번 더 따옴표 안에 들어와 있었다. 두 주 전 따옴표가 두 번 들어왔던 그 박자가, 이번 주에 한 번 더 살아 있었다. 마지막 줄에 균형감각과 대근육 발달이 눈에 띄게 향상되었다는 줄에서, ‘눈에 띄게’라는 다섯 글자가 길게 따라왔다. 평소 알림장에서 잘 쓰이지 않는 강도였다.
한 주의 첫 평일이자 마지막 평일이었던 그 한 줄을, 점심을 먹다 한 번 더 읽고, 퇴근하는 지하철에서 한 번 더 읽었다.
한 주를 마치며
이번 주는 평일 한 번이 한 주 전체를 덮은 한 주였다. 월요일부터 목요일까지는 추석 연휴와 한글날로 어린이집이 닫혀 있었고, 금요일 한 줄에 ‘한층 더 자란 모습’, ‘단단해지고 똑똑해진 모습’, ‘스스로 올라타고 내린다’는 세 표현이 차례로 들어와 있었다. 지난주 빌었던 두 줄 — 회복이 또렷해지길, 한복 사진 옆에 새 한 줄이 들어오길 — 이 한 줄 안에 같이 답을 했다.

The first week of October began. On the last page of the previous week I had wished that her recovery would feel a little clearer, and that another small line would settle next to the hanbok photo. This week, both wishes received their answer inside the same single line. The answer came on Friday, all at once. From Monday through Thursday, daycare was closed for the long Chuseok weekend and Hangul Day, and Friday was the day she returned after nearly four full days at home with the family. Over the holiday we visited my parents’ house. She wore the little hanbok again in their living room, and she briefly met our dog Seori and our cat Wuri — the two who don’t live with us during the weekdays. Lying next to her at night, I quietly checked, one more time, whether her small shoulders had grown another notch over the long weekend.
Monday through Thursday (10/6–10/9) – The Chuseok holiday and Hangul Day
These four weekdays were closed days at daycare. It had been a while since I had a Monday morning where I didn’t head to the bus stop. I opened the notes tab once, remembered again that we were inside the Chuseok holiday, and closed it. Without my work bag, I sat in the living room for a while and looked at the hanbok photos again.
During the holiday, her little feet found one more space inside my parents’ living room floor to grow used to. On the first day, she had only taken two or three steps on the unfamiliar floor before reaching for a hand. From the second day on, when she would walk close to my parents and stretch out her hand, they would hold it and walk her around the whole living room, slowly, in a single quiet loop. A week earlier, the line had been “from five steps at home to seven.” Over the holiday, that line had stretched into “one slow lap around grandma and grandpa’s living room.”
In the evening, she wore her hanbok again, just for them. Seeing her in the small hanbok for the first time, both of my parents stayed on her for a long time, taking photo after photo. While that was happening, Seori and Wuri came close, stepped away, and came close again from one corner of the living room, more than once. The chance to gently pet our two pets — the two who don’t live with us during the weekdays — softly covered one corner of the week.
Friday (10/10) – “Swing-swing” and a noticeably more grown-up self
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Friday morning. The note arrived around 7:21. It was the first line in a full week. The first sentence said she had spent the Chuseok holiday well and had come back to daycare “looking visibly more grown up.” “Visibly more grown up” was a new phrase in the notes. Where last week the line had read “slowly recovering,” this week the same place had been replaced with “visibly more grown up,” one notch higher on the page.
The next line said that, thanks to all the love from her family, she looked sturdier and quicker, and I paused on “sturdier.” It was a word that held both the arc of recovery and the arc of growth inside one short adjective. Reading it on the bus made it clearer that last week’s wish — “please let her recovery feel a little clearer” — had been answered in this Friday’s first line.
The next line said she had shown impressive growth and confidence by getting onto the rocking horse and getting off, all by herself. “Getting on and getting off, all by herself” was new in the notes. A week ago “alone” had moved onto the rocking horse. This week, the motions of climbing on and stepping off were both sitting inside the same line — the line had broken into two small beats.
The next line said she now handled the rocking horse so comfortably that she would happily keep playing it, going “swing, swing.” The onomatopoeia “swing-swing” appeared in quotation marks. The same playful rhythm from two weeks ago — when quotation marks had appeared twice — was alive again this week. The last line said her sense of balance and her gross-motor development had “noticeably improved.” “Noticeably” was an emphasis the daycare notes rarely used.
I read that line — the first and the only weekday line of the week — once again over lunch, and once more on the subway home.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where a single weekday line covered the whole week. From Monday through Thursday, daycare was closed for Chuseok and Hangul Day. Friday’s single line carried three new phrases one after another: “visibly more grown up,” “sturdier and quicker,” and “getting on and off, all by herself.” The two wishes from the previous week — that her recovery would feel clearer, and that another line would sit next to the hanbok photo — were answered together inside the same line.
Over the holiday, she wore her hanbok again at my parents’ house. She took a slow lap around the living room, holding their hands. She also got to pet Seori and Wuri briefly — the two who don’t share the weekdays with us. Lying next to her, I quietly wished that next week the notes would fill back in across all five weekdays again, and that one more line on the rocking horse — one notch closer than this — would appear inside them.
