처음에 다가가는 것이 조금 무서웠는지 뒷걸음 하였지만 잡으면서 위로 던지며 떨어지는 것을 보고 웃으면서 팔을 벌리고 다가와서 비닐 공을 잡아 위로 던지고 굴려보는 신체놀이를 해보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘뒷걸음’에서 ‘팔을 벌리고 다가와서’까지 한 줄 안에 두 박자가 차례로 자리하고 있었다. 한 달 전 로션 앞에서 비켜서 있던 동작이, 이번 주는 봄의 공 앞에서 비슷한 흐름으로 한 번 더 적혀 있었다.

목요일 알림장은 새벽 6시 32분쯤 들어왔다. 어제에 이어서 기차 만들기 놀이를 했다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. 등원하여 친구가 기차 만드는 것을 보고 함께 블록으로 만들어보다가 친구들이 한 명씩 오게 되어 놀이가 더 커지면서 더 활발해지는 모습을 볼 수 있었다는 다음 줄에서, ‘놀이가 더 커지면서’라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 작은 어깨가 시작한 놀이가 다른 친구들로 한 칸 더 펼쳐지는 자리가 알림장에 처음 자리한 줄이었다.

The fifth week of March 2026 began. On the last page of the previous week I had wished that the two pacifier slots would stay empty all the way through, and that “Where are your eyes? Right here~” might be heard once more, beside the rabbit doll. This week, both wishes were answered in the same direction. The mother’s early-morning message said WooRin had played and eaten well over the weekend without her pacifier, and the daycare lines were full of spring flowers. The pacifier slot stayed empty for a week, and spring quietly walked into that empty space. Inside the same week, two new little callings entered her small mouth. Monday’s note said she had called the teacher “ni-ni-ni~” and gestured with her finger to come closer. Thursday’s note said she had said “jeo-yo~” (me!) and raised her hand. A self-made way of calling someone else, and the two syllables that point at herself, walked inside the same week, one after another. A quiet sign that the new homeroom teacher had now moved one step closer into her world had taken its place inside the lines.
Monday (3/30) – “Ni-ni-ni~”
Around 4:24 AM on Monday, her mother left a long note to the new teacher. After seeing the March monthly write-up, it already felt like a month had passed. Thank you for helping WooRin adjust through this month. “One month” — two characters appearing in the parent message for the first time. A unit of one month at the new daycare had now been quietly written down.
In the same message, the weekend was written out one line at a time. Saturday at the cultural center, sensory play with macaroni snacks (and tasting them well). A fun time with Hayeon’s family — she had been starting to play with the older kids lately. Where she used to watch quietly and play alone, now at the playground she would chase along, joining in. I paused on “starting to know the fun of playing together with older kids.” Sunday, our youngest’s 50-day photoshoot — the first family outing as a family of four. “The first family outing as a family of four” — a phrase that took its place inside the mother’s message for the first time.
The teacher’s note arrived around 7:52 AM. The first line said today, welcoming spring, they had talked about the flowers one could see in spring. Last week’s “felt spring” had now moved one notch deeper in — into a conversation about specific spring flowers. The next line said they had talked about the cherry blossoms and forsythia they had seen on their walks, recalling what colors they were and what scents they had carried. “Cherry blossoms” and “forsythia” sat inside the same line. “Recalling” — a new word in the notes.
The next line said when the teacher had said the names of the flowers slowly, WooRin had tried saying them back.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “WooRin seems comfortable with me now — she says ‘ni-ni-ni~’ and gestures with her finger for me to come. It seems to be her way of calling me. When I say ‘Teacher~,’ she says ‘ni-ni-ni~’ back — how cute.” “Ni-ni-ni~” — three small beats sat inside quotation marks. A small slot where the small shoulders called the new teacher in their own way had taken its first place inside a daycare line. A month ago, the small shoulders had been standing in front of a new place holding “mother’s hand tightly.” This week, those same shoulders had taken a small step closer to the new teacher with a calling of their own.
The next line said as her friends walked along a path of paper flower-footprints, she had watched for a while, become interested, walked over, placed her feet on top, and then quietly walked forward in a body-play game. “Walking along a path of flower-footprints” — new in the notes. A small spot where each step was placed exactly on one flower had taken its place. The last line said today they had also measured her — height and weight. A month-unit was now being marked in numbers.
Tuesday (3/31) – Spring colors and “umma~”
Tuesday’s note arrived around 7:20 AM. The first line said they had played a “find the colors of spring” activity today. The next line said balloons and balls in the pretty colors of spring flowers had been placed inside white and blue envelopes. The line after said when she saw balloons larger than herself, she had said “wow~” with her eyes opening round and shining. “Wow~” sat inside quotation marks.
The next line said at first she had stepped back, a little frightened, but when the teacher caught and tossed it gently, watching it fall had brought a laugh, and she had opened her arms and come closer, grabbing a vinyl ball to throw and roll. “Stepping back” and “opened her arms and came closer” sat as two beats inside one line. A month ago, she had been stepping aside from lotion. This week, that same flow had been written again, in front of the spring balloon.
The next line said they had then made a train with cross-shaped blocks. They had laid them out long and long, then discovered today that the blocks could also be assembled — the first time. “Assembly” — a new word in the notes. Two weeks ago she had been linking blocks lengthwise; this week, that same activity had moved one notch over — into actual assembly.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “While listening to a lively song and riding the train, when I said ‘Where shall the train go?’ the cute Dasol-ban kids all answered as one heart: ‘umma~.'” “Umma~” sat inside one line, alongside the Dasol-ban friends, in one shared chorus. A month ago, “umma~” had first come out of her small mouth inside quotation marks. This week, that same calling had moved one step wider — into a chorus of many small voices saying it together.
Wednesday (4/1) – “Kkakka~” and a rain of spring petals
Wednesday’s note arrived around 7:34 AM. The first line said today they had played another “find the colors of spring.” Red, yellow, and light green had been piped onto crackers and placed inside envelopes. The next line said when the teacher had asked “What color is this?” and looked at the cracker color, WooRin had come over, sat down, and said “ee~.” When the teacher said “yellow~,” she had tried to repeat. “Yellow~” sat inside quotation marks. After last week’s “ee~” on a photo, this week the same syllable had moved one step further — into following along an actual color name.
The next line said she had felt the cracker with her palm and her fingertips. When she heard the cracking sound, she had said “kkakka~” and smiled — and a little drool had pooled, too. “Kkakka~” sat inside quotation marks. The same “snack” word that had appeared often in the mother’s messages had now moved into a quoted line inside a daycare note. I smiled a little at “a little drool had pooled.”
The next line said they had then used a toy hammer to explore how the cracker changed. The line after said as friends had played with petal materials, scattering them, WooRin had come over and played too. “Rain of spring petals” — a new phrase in the notes. The words “spring” and “rain” had met to make a third word inside one line. The last line said walking together to find spring flowers on the way to and from daycare would make a nice continuation.
Thursday (4/2) – “Jeo-yo~” and a sprout that puffed up
Thursday’s note arrived around 6:32 AM. The first line said they had continued the train-making play from yesterday. The next line said when she had seen a friend making a train, she had come over and built one with the teacher, with one friend after another joining until the play had grown bigger and more lively. I paused on “the play had grown bigger.” A small spot where one child’s play spreads outward into other children had taken its first place inside a daycare line.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “When I asked ‘Who wants to go to umma?’ WooRin raised her hand high. Now after hearing me say ‘jeo-yo~’ (me!) a few times, she also tries saying ‘jeo-yo~’ herself.” “Jeo-yo~” sat inside quotation marks twice. A second small calling that points at herself had walked into a daycare note for the first time. After “annyeong~” in the mirror two weeks ago and “aga~” in front of the photo last week, this week “jeo-yo~” — pointing at herself with a raised hand — had stepped one more notch in.
The next line said they had explored sprouts on a “coin tissue.” When the teacher had touched a sprout made of pipe cleaners, she had hesitated at first, then touched it and talked about the feel. The line after said she had repeated “ssaek-a~” (sprout) after the teacher and felt the preciousness of life. “Preciousness of life” — five characters new in the notes.
The next line said when the teacher had said “It’s raining from the sky~” and used a dropper to add water, she had watched the coin tissue get bigger with her eyes wide in surprise. Adding more water, she could indirectly experience a sprout growing as the coin tissue puffed up. I paused on “a sprout growing as the coin tissue puffed up.” Five months ago, growing barley sprouts had filled one daycare line. This week, the same growing had walked back in, inside a puffing-up coin tissue.
The next line said during outdoor play she had found fallen cherry blossoms. “Fallen cherry blossoms” — five characters new in the notes. She had smelled them, held them up close in her hand to explore. The last line said WooRin gets so excited the moment she steps outside that she walks straight forward, enjoying the wind the most. I paused on “walking straight forward.” Two months ago, she had been taking one step forward; this week, that same direction had become a more confident walk, one notch firmer.
Friday (4/3) – Arbor Day soil play and planting sprouts
Friday’s note arrived around 6:32 AM. The first line said welcoming Arbor Day, they had briefly talked about what Arbor Day is with the Dasol-ban friends, then played with soil. “Arbor Day” — three characters new in the notes.
The next line said they had brought soil into the classroom, scooped it with spoons, poured it into bowls and emptied it back — a playful exercise of hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. I paused on “scooping with a spoon, pouring into a bowl, and emptying it.” Two weeks ago, in food-play, that same motion had been happening with food pieces; this week, the same motion had moved over onto soil, a new material.
The next line said they had explored the feel of the soil, smelled it, pressed it with their fingertips, and rubbed it. “The smell of soil” — a new phrase in the notes. Five months ago, “smelling and putting it in her mouth” had been a line about a piece of radish. This week, that same beat had moved over to soil.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “Anticipating planting cherry tomatoes with mom, we also planted little sprouts in our own bowls. Surely the pretty sprouts will grow up, healthy and tall, just like WooRin.” I stayed long on “planting cherry tomatoes with mom.” A small slot where home and daycare were quietly linked through a growing sprout took its place inside one line.
After work, I came home and emptied her bag. A lunchbox, a sleep blanket, a rabbit doll, and one or two more tiny scuff marks on the toe of her sneakers. The pacifier slots had stayed empty for one full week. The medicine pouch corner in the living room held another new packet.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where spring flowers and two new little callings walked together inside the same seven days. On Monday, “ni-ni-ni~” — her own way of calling the new teacher — turned toward her for the first time. On Tuesday, the Dasol-ban friends together answered “umma~” with one heart. On Wednesday, “kkakka~” and “yellow~” took turns inside small spots of repeating. On Thursday, “jeo-yo~” — pointing at herself with a raised hand — took its place inside quotation marks. On Friday, the line “planting cherry tomatoes with mom” closed the week, quietly linking home and daycare through a growing sprout.
Both wishes from last week were answered, one quiet notch each. The two pacifier slots stayed empty for another week, and inside those empty places, spring flowers and small sprouts had walked in. Lying down beside her, I wished, quietly, that next week “jeo-yo~” might be heard once at home too, and that the “cherry tomatoes with mom” might find a spot of their own by the living-room window.
