여전히 예쁜 미소를 보여주었다는 다음 줄에서, ‘여전히’라는 세 글자가 길게 따라왔다. 예전처럼 큰소리로 웃거나 활기찬 모습은 다소 줄었지만 기분은 좋아 보였고 점심도 잘 먹었다는 다음 줄에서, ‘다소 줄었지만’이라는 표현이 알림장에서 처음 보였다. 평소엔 항상 활기찬 모습이라고 적히던 자리에, 이번엔 한 칸 다른 형용사가 들어와 있었다.
천천히 회복 중인 모습이 보여서 참 다행이라는 줄에서, ‘천천히 회복 중’이라는 다섯 글자에 잠시 멈췄다. 점심을 먹다 사진을 잠깐 넘기면서, 평소보다 한 칸 작아 보이는 얼굴 한 장에서 한참 머물렀다. 마지막 줄에 적힌 물티슈 보내달라는 짧은 한 줄이, 평소보다 더 또렷하게 읽혔다.

화요일 알림장은 7시 32분쯤 들어왔다. 밝은 미소로 등원했고, 선생님에게 안기며 인사도 고개를 끄덕끄덕 잘했다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. 두 주 전 인사가 고개를 한 번 숙이는 동작이었는데, 이번 주는 ‘끄덕끄덕’으로 두 번 움직이는 동작이 한 칸 더 들어와 있었다.
친구들에게도 관심을 보이며 부쩍 자란 모습이라는 다음 줄에 이어, 친구에게 장난감을 건네주기도 하며 사회성이 자라 가는 모습을 보여준다는 줄이 따라왔다. 두 주 전 선생님에게 공을 건네주던 손이, 이번 주는 친구라는 단어 옆에서 같은 동작을 하고 있었다. ‘사회성’이라는 세 글자가 알림장에 등장한 게 처음이었다.
자기주장이 강해져서 장난감을 던지거나 머리를 흔들며 거부하기도 한다는 다음 줄에서 짧게 웃었다. ‘자기주장’이라는 세 글자가 알림장에 또 처음 등장했다. 한 주 안에 사회성과 자기주장이 같이 들어와 있는 게, 같은 손이 두 방향으로 동시에 자라고 있다는 뜻 같았다.
오늘은 추석맞이로 송편 만들기를 해 보았는데 촉감이 낯설었던지 반죽을 집어던져버렸다는 줄에서 또 짧게 웃었다. ‘집어던져버렸다’라는 표현이 알림장에 들어온 게 처음이었다. 적극적으로 참여는 안 했지만 그래도 작은 경험으로 즐거운 시간이었다는 마지막 줄에서, ‘작은 경험’이라는 네 글자가 따라왔다. 첫 추석을 송편 반죽으로 시작했다는 한 줄이, 한 주의 첫 추석 표지였다.
수요일 (10/1) – 흔들 말 위 혼자와 가을나무
수요일 알림장은 평소보다 조금 이른 7시 10분쯤 들어왔다. 요즘 흔들 말 타는 실력이 부쩍 늘어 혼자서도 능숙하게 즐긴다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. 한 주 전 흔들리는 말 위에서 균형을 잡고 한 번도 떨어지지 않았다는 줄이 있었는데, 이번 주는 그 위에 ‘혼자’라는 단어가 한 칸 더 들어와 있었다.
가을을 맞이해 애그톡 물감을 이용해 가을나무를 색칠해 보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘가을나무’라는 세 글자에 잠시 멈췄다. 가을이라는 단어가 알림장에 들어온 게 세 주 전이었는데, 이번 주는 그 가을이 나무로 한 칸 옮겨 들어와 있었다. 단어 두 개가 만나 다른 한 단어를 만든 한 줄이었다.
처음엔 선생님이 손을 잡고 톡톡 물감을 찍어 보여주자 금세 흥미를 보이며 따라 해보았다는 줄에 이어, 작은 손으로 콩콩 두드리다 자기 손에도 톡톡 쳐보고 물감이 신기한지 활동하면서 즐거워했다는 줄이 따라왔다. ‘톡톡’과 ‘콩콩’이라는 의성어가 한 줄 안에 같이 들어와 있는 게, 평소 알림장과는 다른 박자였다. 손이 도구를 잡았다가, 손이 다른 손을 두드리는 자리까지 한 칸 더 옮겨가 있었다.
목요일 (10/2) – 한복 입은 첫 추석 직전
목요일 알림장은 7시 26분쯤 들어왔다. 첫 줄에서 ‘오늘 아침 엄마에게 눈물을 보이며 등원했다’는 한 줄을 봤다. 그 다음 줄에 ‘하지만 들어서자마자 금세 환한 웃음을 되찾고 흔들 말을 타며 즐겁게 하루를 시작했다’는 줄이 따라왔다. ‘눈물’이라는 두 글자가 알림장에 등장한 게 이번이 처음이었다. 분리할 때 처음으로 의식적으로 눈물을 보였다는 뜻이었다. 점심을 먹다 그 한 줄을 한 번 더 읽었다.
오전 내내 밝은 표정으로 잘 놀았다는 줄에 이어, 12시쯤부터 피곤한 기색이 보이며 떼를 쓰기도 했다는 다음 줄이 따라왔다. 평소보다 조금 이른 시간에 재워주었더니 편안하게 낮잠에 들었다는 줄에서, ‘떼’라는 한 글자가 처음 적혔다. 자기주장에 이어 떼라는 단어가 같은 주에 함께 들어와 있는 게, 회복 중이라는 첫 줄과 같은 자리에 있다는 게 좀 어색하면서도 어쩌면 자연스러운 일이기도 했다.
오늘은 추석을 맞아 전통놀이 활동도 함께 했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘전통놀이’라는 세 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 제기를 만져보며 즐거워하고, 투호놀이에서는 열심히 던지려는 모습을 보였다는 줄이 따라왔다. 화요일에 반죽을 집어던졌던 그 손이, 같은 주에 제기를 만지고 투호를 던지려는 손으로 옮겨와 있는 게 흥미로웠다.
가장 길게 멈췄던 줄은 그 다음이었다. 하린이의 한복 입은 모습이 너무 귀여워서 선생님이 더 즐거워했다는 한 줄이었다. ‘한복’이라는 두 글자가 알림장에 등장한 게 처음이었다. 점심시간에 사진을 두 번 넘겼다. 색이 곱게 어우러진 한 장에 한참 머물렀고, 작은 손이 옷고름을 한 번 잡아본 한 장에 한참 더 머물렀다.
마지막 줄에 즐거운 추석 보내라는 짧은 한 줄과 함께, 수건과 물티슈, 그리고 10월 행사비 입금 부탁이 차례로 적혀 있었다. 가방 안 구조가 다시 한 칸 짜여야 한다는 뜻이었다.
금요일 (10/3) – 알림장이 없는 개천절
이 날은 개천절로 어린이집이 쉬는 날이었다. 가방을 비워두고 거실에서 한복 사진을 한 번 더 들여다봤다. 어제 한복을 입었던 작은 어깨가 거실에서 잠든 옆에 그대로 있었다. 가을 아침의 차가운 바람이 거실 창 너머로 들어와 있었고, 한복 위에 추석을 맞이한 작은 어깨가 그 아래에서 천천히 숨 쉬고 있었다.
한 주를 마치며

The last week of September began. On the last page of the previous week, I had wished that a line would return to the notes. This week, the line did return on Monday — and the reason why the previous week had stayed empty for four straight weekdays also revealed itself in the same line. Those four empty days had not been a daycare closure. WooRin had been sick the whole week. The first line said her face looked a little thinner from the illness, “almost like half the face we knew.” Reading that, the lunchbox and the empty side of the bag from last week suddenly came back at a different weight. I stayed at the bus stop and read that line a few more times. This week was a quiet, step-by-step move from that thinner face into a small Korean hanbok worn for her first Chuseok. The arc of recovery and the arc of the holiday were sitting inside the same week.
Monday (9/29) – The first line of recovery, and a thinner face
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Monday morning. The note arrived later than usual, around 7:57. The first line said WooRin had gotten a little thinner after being sick, that her face looked like only half of itself. The reason the previous week’s notes had been empty for four weekdays was sitting in that single sentence. I stayed there a while, reading the line again.
The next line said she was still showing her pretty smile. “Still” was a small word that stayed with me. The line after said her usual loud laughs and lively moments had been a bit reduced, but she had seemed in a good mood and had eaten lunch well. “A bit reduced” was a phrase new to the notes. Where the writing had always reached for “lively,” this week it had reached for a quieter adjective instead.
The next line said it was a relief to see her slowly recovering. I paused on “slowly recovering.” Over lunch I flipped through the photos and stayed on one image where her face looked, just barely, one size smaller than usual. The very last line — a short request to send wet wipes — was clearer than usual.
Tuesday (9/30) – A nodding hello and a piece of songpyeon dough
Tuesday’s note arrived around 7:32. The first line said she had come in with a bright smile, hugged the teacher, and greeted them with little nods of her head. Two weeks ago, “hello” had been answered with a single small bow. This week, the same hello had stretched into a double “nod, nod.”
The next line said she had also been showing interest in the other children — visibly more grown up — and had even handed a toy to a friend, showing how her social side was beginning to grow. Two weeks earlier, her hand had been giving a ball to a teacher. This week, the same hand was doing the same motion next to the word “friend.” “Sociability” was new in the notes.
The next line said her self-assertion had grown stronger too: sometimes she would throw a toy, or shake her head to refuse. I smiled a little at that. “Self-assertion” was another new word. Having both “sociability” and “self-assertion” inside the same week felt like the same little hand growing in two directions at once.
The next line said today they had tried making songpyeon (Korean half-moon rice cakes) for Chuseok, and that the dough had felt unfamiliar, so she had ended up tossing it away. I laughed again. “Tossed it away” was a phrase that hadn’t been in a note before. The last line said she hadn’t actively participated, but it had still been a fun little experience. “Little experience” stayed with me. Her very first Chuseok had begun, on the page, with a piece of songpyeon dough.
Wednesday (10/1) – Alone on the rocking horse, and an autumn tree
Wednesday’s note came earlier than usual, around 7:10. The first line said her skill on the rocking horse had grown noticeably, that she could now enjoy it on her own. A week ago, the note had said she had held her balance on a wobbling horse and never fallen. This week, the word “alone” had moved into that same horse.
The next line said they had celebrated autumn by using “egg-tok” paints to color an autumn tree, and I paused on “autumn tree.” “Autumn” had first entered the notes three weeks ago. This week, that autumn had shifted into a tree — two words meeting and making a third one inside a single line.
The next line said the teacher had first guided her hand to dab the paint, “tok, tok,” and that she had quickly become interested and tried it herself. The line after said she had patted with her small hand — “kong, kong” — and even tapped the back of her own hand a little. Two onomatopoeic words sitting inside the same line gave the page a different rhythm than usual. Her hand had moved from holding a tool to tapping another hand of her own, one notch further in.
Thursday (10/2) – Just before her first hanbok Chuseok
Thursday’s note arrived around 7:26. The first line said WooRin had cried a little leaving her mom this morning. The next line said but as soon as she had stepped inside, she had quickly found her bright laugh again and started the day on the rocking horse. “Tears” was a word appearing in the notes for the first time. It meant she had now, consciously, cried at separation for the first time. I read that line again over lunch.
The next line said she had played brightly through the whole morning. The line after said that around noon, she had looked tired and started to fuss a little, so they had laid her down to nap slightly earlier than usual and she had fallen asleep comfortably. The word “fussing” appeared for the first time. Self-assertion last week, fussing this week, and “recovering” in the same week’s first line — three little shifts living together in one week, both odd and somehow natural.
The next line said they had done traditional Korean play activities for Chuseok. “Traditional play” was new in the notes. The line after said she had touched the jegi (a small Korean kicking token) with delight, and at the tuho throwing game she had eagerly tried to throw the arrows. The same hand that had tossed away the songpyeon dough on Tuesday was, by Thursday, gently holding a jegi and trying to throw a tuho arrow.
The line I stayed at the longest came next. It said WooRin in her little hanbok had been so cute that the teacher had had even more fun because of it. The word “hanbok” was appearing in a note for the first time. At lunch I flipped through the photos twice. I stayed long on one picture where the colors of the hanbok softly came together, and even longer on one where her small hand was touching the otgoreum — the long front ribbon — just once.
The last lines wished us a happy Chuseok, asked us to send a towel and wet wipes, and reminded us about the October event fee. The bag’s geometry was going to be rearranged one more time.
Friday (10/3) – A national holiday with no note
This was Gaecheonjeol (National Foundation Day), so daycare was closed. I left the bag empty and looked at the hanbok photos once more in the living room. The small shoulders that had worn the hanbok the day before were now sleeping quietly next to me. The cold autumn morning air came in through the window, and under it, the small shoulders that had met her first Chuseok went on breathing slowly and softly.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week that began with a thinner face and ended with a hanbok. On Monday, “slowly recovering” appeared in a note for the first time. On Tuesday, “hello” stretched into a double nod, and a piece of songpyeon dough was tossed away. On Wednesday, the word “alone” stepped onto the rocking horse, and autumn became an autumn tree. On Thursday, “tears,” “fussing,” “traditional play,” and “hanbok” all settled into the same week one after another. The arc of recovery and the arc of the holiday lived inside the same seven days.
The wish from last week — “please let a line come back into the notes” — was answered on Monday’s first line. The fact that the answer arrived as a line about recovery sat heavily in one corner of my chest, but the hanbok, the songpyeon, and the autumn tree that followed gave the week a quiet balance. Lying next to her, I wished that next week her recovery would feel a little clearer, and that another small line would come settle next to the hanbok photo.
