2026년 5월의 첫 주가 시작됐다. 지난주 마지막 페이지에 약 봉투 한 칸이 다시 한 주 비어 있길, 작은 입에서 어른의 질문 한 줄이 또 한 번 따라 나오길 적었는데, 이번 주는 두 줄이 직접 답을 받지는 않았지만, 한 칸 다른 자리에서 작은 어깨가 자기 몸의 이름을 한 줄에 처음 또렷이 부른 한 주였다. 5월 첫째 주는 어린이날 연휴와 어버이날 사이에 끼인 주여서, 알림장은 두 줄만 들어왔다. 화요일 어린이날을 끼고 평일 다섯 칸 중 세 칸이 휴원이거나 가정 자리로 자리하고 있었다. 어린이집 알림장은 수요일과 목요일 한 번씩 들어왔지만, 그 두 줄 안에 작은 입이 자기 몸의 이름을 부른 자리, 친구의 손톱에 반짝이 스티커를 붙여준 자리가 한 줄에 자리하고 있었다. ‘눈~~~ 코~~~ 입~~ 귀~~~’라는 네 글자가 따옴표 안에 차례로 들어왔다. 작년 3월 첫 등원 자리에서 시작된 한 칸 한 칸이, 한 해를 돌고 새 다솔반에서 두 달을 지나, 이번 주는 자기 몸의 이름을 한 줄에 같이 부르는 자리로 한 칸 더 올라와 있었다. 잠든 옆에 누워, 그 한 줄이 지나온 자리를 한 번 더 짚어봤다.

이 두 평일은 어린이집이 쉬는 날들이었다. 5월 5일이 어린이날이었고, 5월 4일이 그 앞에 자리한 연휴 평일이었다.
어린이날 아침은 거실에서 작은 어깨가 평소보다 한 칸 늦게 일어났다. 가족 네 명이 평일 한 칸을 같이 보내는 자리가 한 주 만에 두 번째로 자리하고 있었다. 부모 양손이 작은 손에 한 손씩 잡혀, 작은 동물원 한 칸을 한 바퀴 도는 자리가 그 평일에 자리해 있었다. 동생은 작은 카시트 한쪽에 자리해 있었고, 작은 어깨가 동생의 작은 손을 한 번 톡톡 친 자리도 그 한 시간 안에 들어와 있었다.

수요일 알림장은 키노 오류로 그날 들어오지 않았고, 다음 날 새벽 6시 30분쯤 두 줄이 한꺼번에 들어왔다. 첫 줄에서 ‘‘여기 여기~’ 노래에 맞추어서 눈, 코, 입, 귀를 찾아보았다’는 한 줄을 봤다. ‘여기 여기~’라는 네 글자가 따옴표 안에 들어와 있었다. 한 달 전 ‘눈은 어디 있나? 여기~’ 노래가 처음 들어왔던 자리에서, 이번 주는 그 노래가 한 칸 더 줄어든 ‘여기 여기~’로 한 박자 가까워져 있었다.
노래에 맞추어 신나게 엉덩이를 흔들흔들 하며 눈, 코, 입을 찾아보았다는 다음 줄에 이어, ‘머리, 어깨 무릎 발~’ 노래에 맞추어서 율동을 하며 나의 신체 기관에 대해서 알아보았다는 줄이 따라왔다. ‘머리, 어깨 무릎 발~’이라는 일곱 글자가 따옴표 안에 들어와 있었다. 한 달 전 ‘산토끼’와 ‘나비야’와 ‘개구리’ 노래에 이어, 이번 주는 신체를 노래하는 첫 동요가 한 칸 더 자리하고 있었다.
가장 길게 멈췄던 줄은 그 다음이었다. ‘하린이는 자신의 신체 기관을 찾으며 즐거운지 ‘눈~~~ 코~~~ 입~~ 귀~~~’라고 반복하여 말하며 손가락으로 짚어보고 발을 들고 ‘발~’이라고 이야기하며 즐겁게 참여하였다’는 한 줄이었다. ‘눈~~~ 코~~~ 입~~ 귀~~~’라는 네 글자가 따옴표 안에 같이 들어와 있었다. 자기 신체의 다섯 부위를 작은 입에서 한 줄로 차례로 부르는 자리가 알림장에 처음 적힌 줄이었다. 두 주 전 ‘엄마~ 아빠~’라는 두 사람의 이름을 두 음절씩 부른 자리에서, 이번 주는 자기 몸 다섯 부위를 한 글자씩 한 줄에 같이 부르는 자리로 한 칸 더 들어가 있었다.

목요일 (5/7) – 내 손을 그리고 친구의 손톱에
목요일 알림장은 새벽 6시 31분쯤 들어왔다. ‘어제에 이어서 나의 몸에 대해서 알아보았다’는 첫 줄에 이어, ‘눈은 어디 있나?’라고 물어보며 찾아보기 놀이를 한 뒤 눈, 코, 입 순으로 찾아보고 손가락으로 짚어보며 놀이를 해보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘눈은 어디 있나?’라는 표현이 두 달 전과 똑같은 자리에 다시 자리하고 있었다.
가장 길게 멈췄던 줄은 그 다음이었다. ‘다양한 기관을 손으로 짚어보고 신나하면서 친구에게 자기가 손가락으로 짚은 곳을 보라고 베이비사인으로 표현하는 모습’이라는 한 줄이었다. ‘베이비사인’이라는 다섯 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 친구에게 자기가 가리키는 곳을 같이 보자고 손짓으로 표시하는 자리가 알림장에 처음 자리한 줄이었다. 손가락이 자기 몸을 짚는 자리에서, 그 손가락이 가리키는 자리를 친구에게도 같이 보자고 한 박자 더 펼쳐지는 자리였다.
친구와 마주 앉아서 친구의 얼굴을 가만히 탐색을 한 뒤 친구의 눈, 코, 입을 찾아보며 친구와 함께 애정을 쌓아보는 시간을 가져보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘애정을 쌓아보는 시간’이라는 다섯 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다.
오늘은 내 손을 그려보는 놀이를 해보았다는 다음 줄, 평소에 끼적이기 판에 자주 하린이의 손을 그려달라고 할 때가 있어 도화지 위에 작은 손을 그려보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘하린이의 손을 그려달라고 할 때가 있다’는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 거실에서도 같은 자리가 한 칸 자리하고 있다는 것을 알림장이 한 번 더 확인해주는 줄이었다. 그림을 그리고 작은 손톱을 그려 보고 손톱 위에 예쁜 반짝이 스티커를 붙여보기를 했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘반짝이 스티커’라는 다섯 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다.
한참을 붙이고 이제는 실제 친구의 손톱에 하린이가 붙여보기를 하였고, 다 붙이고 기분이 좋은지 친구가 하린이에게 자신의 손을 붙여주자 하린이도 웃어주며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다는 다음 줄에서, ‘친구의 손톱에 하린이가 붙여보기’와 ‘친구가 하린이의 손톱에 스티커를 붙여주며’라는 두 박자가 같은 한 줄 안에 들어와 있었다. 한 달 전 친구에게 음식을 건네던 그 손이, 이번 주는 친구의 작은 손톱 한 칸에 작은 반짝이를 한 칸 자리하게 해주는 자리로 한 칸 더 들어가 있었다. 받는 자리도 한 줄 안에 같이 들어와, 한 박자 옆에서 같은 동작이 한 번 더 자리하고 있었다.
금요일 (5/8) – 어버이날의 평일

아침 등원 전 작은 손이 거실에서 작은 카네이션 한 송이를 한 번 들어보았다. 두 사람의 가슴에 작은 손이 카네이션을 한 송이씩 달아주는 자리가 거실에서 한 시간쯤 머물렀다. 두 주 전 가족사진 위에 꽃을 한 송이 한 송이 붙이던 그 손이, 이번 주는 사람의 가슴에 직접 한 송이를 달아주는 자리로 한 칸 더 들어와 있었다. ‘엄마~ 아빠~’라는 네 글자가 따옴표 안에서 한 번 더 자리하지는 않았지만, 작은 손 한 칸이 그 두 사람의 가슴 한 칸에 직접 자리한 한 시간이 그 평일에 들어와 있었다.
저녁에 가방 안을 비웠다. 도시락통 하나, 이불 한 장, 토끼인형 하나, 그리고 신발 끝에 묻은 작은 자국. 거실 한쪽 약 봉투 자리에는 새 봉투가 추가로 들어오지 않은 자리에 있었다. 한 주 사이에 약 봉투 한 칸이 또 한 번 비어 있는 흐름으로 자리하고 있었다.
한 주를 마치며

The first week of May 2026 began. On the last page of the previous week I had wished that the medicine pouch corner would stay empty for another week, and that one more line of a grown-up’s question would walk out of her small mouth. Those two wishes did not get direct answers, but in slightly different places, a small mouth called the names of her own body together inside one line for the first time. The first week of May sat between the Children’s Day holidays and Parents’ Day, so only two daycare notes arrived. With Children’s Day on Tuesday, three of five weekday slots were closed or at home. The daycare notes came once each on Wednesday and Thursday, but inside those two short notes, a slot for a small mouth calling out the names of her own body, and a slot for placing sparkly stickers on a friend’s fingernails, took their place inside one line each. “Nun~~~ ko~~~ ip~~ gwi~~~” (eyes~ nose~ mouth~ ears~) — four small words walked inside quotation marks. The single small step that had begun on her first drop-off in March of last year had, after one full year and two months in the new Dasol-ban, now stepped up one more notch — into a single line where the names of her own body were called together. Lying down beside her, I traced once more the path that this single line had walked through.
Monday and Tuesday (5/4–5/5) – Children’s Day holiday
These two weekdays were closed at daycare. May 5 was Children’s Day, and May 4 was a holiday weekday sitting in front of it.
On the morning of Children’s Day, her small shoulders woke one notch later than usual from the living-room corner. A slot where all four family members spent one weekday together took its place for the second time inside one week. With both parents’ hands holding her small hand, one on each side, they walked one slow loop around a small zoo. Her sibling sat in a small car seat to the side, and her small shoulders tapped the sibling’s little hand once — that slot too sat inside the hour.
Back home, lying down beside her, it became one notch clearer that her first Children’s Day had taken its small place that way.
Wednesday (5/6) – “Nun~~~ ko~~~ ip~~ gwi~~~”
Wednesday’s note didn’t come in that day because of a Kino (notebook) error; the next morning, around 6:30, two notes arrived together. The first line said: “We sang ‘yeogi yeogi~’ (here here~) and found our eyes, nose, mouth, and ears.” “Yeogi yeogi~” sat inside quotation marks. A month ago, “Where are your eyes? Right here~” had first appeared as a song; this week, that song had moved one notch closer, shortened into “yeogi yeogi~.”
The next line said they had shaken their bottoms cheerfully to the song, finding their eyes, nose, mouth. The line after said they had also done movements to “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes~” and learned about the parts of the body. “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes~” sat inside quotation marks. After last month’s “Mountain Bunny” and “Butterfly” and “Frog” songs, this week, the first song about the body had taken its place too.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “Searching for the parts of her own body and clearly enjoying it, WooRin repeated ‘nun~~~ ko~~~ ip~~ gwi~~~’ (eyes~ nose~ mouth~ ears~), pointed with her fingers, lifted her foot up and said ‘bal~’ (foot~).” “Nun~~~ ko~~~ ip~~ gwi~~~” — four small words — sat together inside quotation marks. The slot where five parts of her own body were called from her own small mouth, one after another inside one line, had appeared inside a daycare note for the first time. Two weeks ago, “umma~ appa~” had been the names of two people called in two-syllable bursts; this week, that same flow had stepped one notch deeper — into calling five parts of her own body together inside one line.
The next line said she had sat facing a friend, looked at the friend’s face, and joyfully searched for the friend’s pretty eyes, nose, and mouth. The same fingers that had called the names of her own body had quietly moved across, in the same line, onto a friend’s face.
The last lines said the weather had been so good that during outdoor play they had blown “hoo~” on dandelion seeds, gathered azaleas to throw high in the sky, and walked happily feeling the cool spring wind. Two months ago, dandelion seeds had first arrived; this week, the same “hoo~” had taken its place again. The same single syllable had walked through several different places over two months.
Thursday (5/7) – Drawing my own hand and a friend’s fingernails
Thursday’s note arrived around 6:31 AM. The first line said following yesterday, they had continued learning about the body. The line after said when the teacher had asked “Where are your eyes?” and played the finding game, they had found eyes, nose, mouth in order, and pointed with their fingers. “Where are your eyes?” was sitting in the exact same kind of spot as it had two months earlier.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “Pointing at various parts of the body with her hand and clearly enjoying it, she also showed her friends the part she was pointing at, using a baby sign to express it.” “Baby sign” — five characters new in the notes. A slot where she signaled to a friend to also look at where she was pointing had walked into a daycare line for the first time. Where her finger had been pointing at her own body, that same finger had now spread one notch further — into inviting a friend to look at the same place.
The next line said she had sat facing a friend, gently explored the friend’s face, found the friend’s eyes, nose, mouth, and spent time building affection together. “Building affection” — five characters new in the notes.
The next line said today they had played at drawing her own hand. The line after said because she had often asked us to draw her hand on her scribbling pad at home, the teacher had drawn her small hand on the paper. I paused on “she has often asked us to draw her hand at home.” A line in the daycare note quietly confirming that the same little slot also sat inside our living room. The line after said they had drawn the picture, drawn her small fingernails on top, and placed pretty sparkly stickers onto the fingernails. “Sparkly stickers” — five characters new in the notes.
The next line said after a long time of sticking them on, WooRin had then placed stickers onto an actual friend’s fingernails. After she finished and looked happy, the friend had stuck her own onto WooRin’s hand, and WooRin had smiled, sharing a joyful time. The two beats — “WooRin placing stickers on her friend’s fingernails” and “the friend placing stickers on WooRin’s fingernails” — sat together inside one line. A month ago, the same little hand had been offering food to a friend. This week, that same hand had moved one notch further — placing one tiny sparkle onto a friend’s tiny fingernail, one notch at a time. The receiving side took its place inside the same line too, the same motion sitting again one beat over.
Friday (5/8) – Parents’ Day, an ordinary weekday
This was Parents’ Day, sitting on a regular weekday. The daycare ran normally, but inside the family, one slot of the weekday held a slightly different beat.
Before drop-off in the morning, a small hand briefly picked up a small carnation in the living room. A slot where the small hand pinned a single carnation onto each of two people’s chests stayed inside our living room for about an hour. Two weeks ago, the same hand had been placing flowers, one by one, onto a family photo. This week, that same hand had moved one notch further — pinning a single flower directly onto a person’s chest. “Umma~ appa~” did not appear inside quotation marks one more time, but an hour where one small hand took its place directly on those two people’s chests sat inside that weekday.
In the evening I emptied her bag. A lunchbox, a sleep blanket, a rabbit doll, and one or two more tiny scuff marks on the toe of her sneakers. The medicine pouch corner in the living room did not have a new packet added. Inside one week, the small spot stayed empty in its own quiet flow once more.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where the names of her own body were called together inside one line, out of her small mouth. On Monday and Tuesday, Children’s Day holidays kept two weekday slots at home. On Wednesday, “yeogi yeogi~,” “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes~,” and “nun~~~ ko~~~ ip~~ gwi~~~” sat in turn inside the same single line. On Thursday, “Where are your eyes?” was followed by a baby sign to a friend, inviting them to look at the same place, and by placing sparkly stickers onto a friend’s fingernails. On Friday, on Parents’ Day, in the living room, a small hand pinned a single carnation onto each of two people’s chests.
The single drop-off photo from March of last year still sits on one corner of our living-room bookshelf. On top of that small first photo, the small shoulders that had grown one more notch over one full year and a few months had now, in one line, settled the names of her own body and the small fingernails of a friend, side by side. Lying down beside her, the next week was already taking its turn — beginning, one more time, from the very same small spot.
