책 속의 동물 그림을 가리키며 ‘하마’, ‘악어’라고 또렷하게 말하는 모습이 인상적이었다는 다음 줄에서, ‘하마’와 ‘악어’가 다시 따옴표 안에 들어와 있었다. 한 달 전 같은 두 단어가 따옴표 안에 들어왔던 자리에, 이번 주는 그 위에 ‘또렷하게’와 ‘발음도 한층 더 정확해졌다’는 두 표현이 한 칸 더 덧붙어 있었다. 같은 단어가 한 달 사이에 발음의 또렷함으로 한 칸 더 올라와 있었다.

화요일은 새벽 1시 26분쯤 부모 메시지 칸에 한 줄을 짧게 남겼다. 아침에 밥을 거의 안 먹고 갔다는 줄, 약은 10시 10분에 먹였고 15시 10분 이후에 먹여달라는 한 줄. 짧은 두 줄이 같은 자리에 다시 들어와 있었다.
알림장은 7시 28분쯤 들어왔다. 등원하자마자 흔들 말을 타며 신나게 놀이를 시작했고, 기분 좋은 웃음이 교실 가득 퍼졌다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. ‘교실 가득 퍼졌다’는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 평소 작은 어깨 안에 머물던 웃음이, 이번 주는 한 줄 더 넓은 공간으로 한 칸 퍼져 있었다.
전등에 불이 켜지는 모습을 노란 색종이를 붙여 표현해 보는 활동에도 즐겁게 참여했다는 다음 줄에서, ‘전등에 불이 켜지는 모습’이라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 한 줄 안에 색종이라는 단어와 전등이라는 단어가 같이 들어와 있었다. 색을 한 가지 사물에 비유하는 자리가 알림장에 처음 적힌 줄이었다.

수요일 알림장은 7시 38분쯤 들어왔다. 사진이 37장 첨부돼 있었다. 한 주의 평일 한 칸으로는 평소보다 많은 사진 수였다. 첫 줄에 ‘투호놀이, 제기차기, 윷놀이 등 다양한 전통놀이를 해보았다’는 한 줄을 봤다. ‘투호’와 ‘제기’와 ‘윷놀이’가 한 줄에 세 단어로 차례로 들어와 있었다. 넉 달 전 추석 때 제기와 투호가 한 줄에 적혔던 그 자리에, 이번 주는 윷놀이까지 더해진 세 단어로 한 칸 더 두툼해져 있었다.
한복을 입은 고운 모습으로 놀이에 참여하는 모습이 예뻐서 절로 웃음이 나는 시간이었다는 다음 줄에서, ‘한복을 입은 고운 모습’이라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 추석 한복이 한 번 들어왔던 자리에, 이번 주는 설 한복이 한 번 더 자리하고 있었다. 한 해 안에 한복을 두 번 입은 자리가 알림장 안에 두 번째로 적힌 줄이었다.

목요일 (2/12) – ‘치장하는 까마귀’와 날개
목요일 알림장은 7시 28분쯤 들어왔다. 오감 선생님과 함께 ‘치장하는 까마귀’ 인형극을 보며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다는 첫 줄이 들어왔다. ‘치장하는 까마귀’라는 일곱 글자가 따옴표 안에 들어와 있었다. 알림장에 인형극 제목이 따옴표 안에 들어온 게 처음이었다. 두 주 전 ‘산토끼’ 동요가 따옴표 안에 들어왔던 자리에, 이번 주는 인형극이 한 칸 더 자리하고 있었다.
이야기에 집중하며 감상한 뒤, 새가 된 것처럼 날개를 달고 날아다니며 몸으로 표현해 보았다는 다음 줄에서, ‘새가 된 것처럼’이라는 표현에 잠시 멈췄다. 두 달 전 택배 기사로 변신하던 그 첫 역할 놀이가, 이번 주는 새로 한 칸 더 자유로운 자리로 옮겨와 있었다. 첫 역할 놀이가 두 달 사이에 동물이 되는 자리까지 한 박자 더 들어와 있었다.

금요일 알림장은 7시 41분쯤 들어왔다. 2026년이 시작된 지도 얼마 되지 않은 것 같은데 어느새 입춘도 지나고 설 명절이 성큼 다가왔다는 한 줄에 이어, 행복하고 즐거운 명절 보내라는 한 줄, ‘새해 복 많이 받으세요’라는 한 줄, 그리고 ‘약은 낮잠 자고 일어나 1시 50분에 먹였다’는 짧은 한 줄. 네 줄이었다. ‘입춘’이라는 두 글자가 알림장에 처음 등장했다. 절기 단어가 알림장 안에 한 칸 자리한 게 처음이었다.
퇴근하고 집에 돌아가 가방 안을 비웠다. 도시락통 하나, 그리고 신발 끝에 묻은 작은 자국. 거실 한쪽 약 봉투 자리에 화요일과 금요일에 받아온 봉투가 한 칸 더 자리해 있었다. 한 주 사이에 약 봉투가 두 칸씩 들어왔다 자리해 있긴 했지만, 한 주 전체가 같은 흐름은 아니었다. 다음 주는 설 명절 때문에 평일 자리가 몇 칸 비어 있을 차례였다.
한 주를 마치며

The second week of February 2026 began. On the last page of the previous week I had wished that the lightening flow of the medicine pouch corner would extend across the whole week, and that one more new animal name might come clearly out of that small mouth. This week, both wishes were answered from one notch over. Medicine times appeared at the bottom of Tuesday’s and Friday’s notes; no new animal name walked in by itself. But in their place, a line of a different texture arrived. “She expressed her own thoughts in two-word sentences — ‘gimme,’ ‘me too,’ ‘read it’ — and communicated happily.” A small mouth was shifting from one-word to two-word, one notch over. Inside the same week, the Lunar New Year (Seol) walked in alongside the hanbok. Wednesday’s note carried three traditional games — tuho throwing, jegi kicking, yutnori — together with the rice-cake soup that adds another year, plus practice for the traditional bow. Thirty-seven photos arrived in that one note. The closing edge of one year and the opening of another new holiday sat inside the same week’s quiet space. Lying down beside her, it became clear once more that two-word sentences and a hanbok had both been growing inside these same seven days.
Monday (2/9) – “Gimme,” “me too,” “read it”
I got to the bus stop around 7:10 on Monday. The note arrived around 7:49. The first line said “WooRin has grown so much more expressive lately, her ways of letting us know what she means have really filled out.” “Filled out” — new in the notes. A month ago, “her language is growing rapidly” had been the line. This week, that same thread had taken one notch further in.
The next line said she had pointed at animal pictures in the book and clearly said “hippo” and “crocodile.” “Hippo” and “crocodile” were back inside quotation marks, the same way they had been a month ago. But this week, on top of those same words, two extra phrases had been added: “clearly” and “her pronunciation has grown noticeably more accurate.” The same words had risen one notch — from being there at all to being there clearly.
The line I stayed at longest came next. “She expressed her own thoughts in two-word sentences — ‘gimme,’ ‘me too,’ ‘read it’ — and communicated happily.” “Two-word sentences” — new in the notes. I read that line twice on the bus. One word being bound to one more word, inside her mouth, had stepped one notch deeper in. Reading the three quoted phrases back, “gimme” → “me too” → “read it,” the beat moved across three small steps inside a single line.
The last line said this had been a day where her language expression had grown noticeably. “Grown noticeably” — a small phrase that followed quietly.
Tuesday (2/10) – Glue and colored paper, and an announcement
Tuesday started with a short note in the parent message box around 1:26 AM. That she had barely eaten breakfast before coming in today. That the morning medicine had been given at 10:10, and the next dose should be given after 15:10. A small two-line note had taken its place there again.
The teacher’s note arrived around 7:28. The first line said the moment she had come in, she had jumped onto the rocking horse and started playing energetically, and her happy laughter had “spread through the whole classroom.” I paused on “spread through the whole classroom.” The laughter that usually sat inside the small space of her own shoulders had moved, this week, one notch wider — into a bigger room.
The next line said they had also joined an activity where they used yellow paper to express the look of a lamp being turned on. I paused on “the look of a lamp being turned on.” Inside one line, “colored paper” and “lamp” sat together. The act of using one color to stand in for one object had appeared in a daycare line for the first time.
The next line said WooRin really loves glue, so she had eagerly rubbed it and stuck the pre-cut paper pieces on, one by one. I smiled at “really loves glue.” A preference for a particular tool had now made its way into the notes.
The last lines said tomorrow there would be several events, and asked us to send a hanbok and a small apron if we had them. “Hanbok” — the word’s second appearance in the notes.
Wednesday (2/11) – A hanbok, tuho, and yutnori
Wednesday’s note arrived around 7:38, with thirty-seven photos attached. For a single weekday note, that was more than usual. The first line said they had played various traditional Korean games — tuho throwing, jegi kicking, and yutnori. Three words — “tuho,” “jegi,” “yutnori” — sat in one line, in turn. Four months ago, at Chuseok, “jegi” and “tuho” had appeared together. This week, “yutnori” had been added to that pair, one notch fuller.
The next line said how pretty she had looked in her little hanbok, joining the games — it had been the kind of scene that made the teacher smile without thinking. I paused on “how pretty she looked in her little hanbok.” The fall hanbok had once walked into the notes. This week, the Lunar New Year hanbok had walked in again. A hanbok appearing twice inside the same school year was new in the notes.
The next line said they had cut rice-cake pieces and talked about how eating tteokguk means adding another year. I stayed long on “adding another year.” “Another year” — new in the notes. The simple fact that her small shoulders would grow one year had now been quietly placed in a daycare line for the first time. It was the line I stayed at the longest.
The next line said they had also practiced “how to do the New Year’s bow,” and how she had followed along well, bowing prettily. “How to do the New Year’s bow” — new in the notes. One motion being separated out as a method, written down as a noun, was one notch more deliberate than before.
The last line said she had spent a joyful and meaningful day feeling Korean tradition through her body. “Feeling tradition through the body” — a phrase that followed softly.
Thursday (2/12) – “The Dressing Crow” and a pair of wings
Thursday’s note arrived around 7:28. The first line said they had spent a fun time with the sensory teacher watching a puppet play called “The Dressing Crow.” “The Dressing Crow” sat inside quotation marks. A puppet play title appearing inside quotation marks was new in the notes. Two weeks ago, “Mountain Bunny” had appeared this way as a song title. This week, a puppet play had stepped into that same kind of small spot.
The next line said after watching the story, she had pretended to be a bird, put on wings and flown around, expressing it with her body. I paused on “pretended to be a bird.” Two months ago, the first role-play had been “delivery driver.” This week, the same role-play had moved one notch further — into being an animal. A first role-play had grown, in two months, into becoming an animal.
The next line said when a lively children’s song came on, she had shaken an instrument to the beat and performed along — feeling the rhythm naturally with the music. “Performing” — new in the notes. Two months ago, a wrist rattle had been shaken; this week, that same shaking had been written as “performing,” one notch more formal.
Friday (2/13) – Ipchun and a Lunar New Year greeting
Friday’s note arrived around 7:41. One line said 2026 had barely started, and yet ipchun (the beginning of spring) had already passed and Seol was right around the corner. Another wished us a happy holiday. Another said “Happy New Year.” And the last said: “Gave her medicine after her nap, at 1:50 PM.” Four lines. “Ipchun” — the first time a solar-term name had appeared in the notes.
After work I came home and emptied her bag. A lunchbox, and one or two more tiny scuff marks on the toe of her sneakers. The medicine pouch corner in the living room held a Tuesday packet and a Friday packet. Two notches had walked into the corner this week, even if the whole week hadn’t carried the same flow. Next week would have a few empty weekday slots, because of the Lunar New Year holiday.
Wrapping up the week
This was a week where two-word sentences, a hanbok, and a puppet play all walked inside the same seven days. On Monday, three two-word phrases — “gimme,” “me too,” “read it” — sat inside quotation marks. On Tuesday, “really loves glue” entered the notes as her first stated tool preference. On Wednesday, “tuho, jegi, yutnori,” “the New Year’s bow,” and “another year” appeared one after another inside the same line. On Thursday, “The Dressing Crow” and “performing” followed. On Friday, the solar term “ipchun” closed the week.
The two wishes from last week were answered from places one notch over. That one word had moved into two — that single shift was, in itself, the biggest line of the week. Lying down beside her, I wished, quietly again, that next week, after the Lunar New Year, one weekday would carry its usual line again, and that two-word sentences would settle inside one more line, in quotation marks.
