지난주 막 본격적인 여름이 시작됐다 싶었는데, 둘째 주는 그 더위가 더 짙어졌다. 출근길 버스에서 손등을 닦는 일이 잦아졌고, 어린이집 가방 안의 손수건도 한 장 더 들어갔다. 이번 주는 알림장을 열어 볼 때마다 마음 한쪽이 자꾸 기울었다. 화요일 점심 무렵 도착한 알림장에 ‘토했다’는 단어가 보이는 순간, 회의실 의자에 앉아 있던 어깨가 한 번 굳었다가 천천히 풀렸다. 다음 날도 그다음 날도 약을 먹였다는 한 줄이 끝에 붙어 있었다. 그러는 사이 같은 아이가, 목요일에는 망설이던 터널 안으로 자기 발로 쑥 들어갔다는 사진을 보내 주셨다. 여벌옷 두 벌과 약 봉투를 챙기는 마음과, 처음으로 어딘가 안으로 들어가 보는 작은 등을 지켜보는 마음이 한 주 안에 같이 있었다. 그 두 마음을 같이 안고 한 주를 보냈다.
월요일 (7/14) – 에그톡톡과 손끝의 첫 감각
월요일 출근 버스에서 알림장을 열어 봤다. 사진 속 하린이가 작은 손가락 끝을 동그란 도구에 살짝 올린 자세로 굳어 있었다. 처음 만져 보는 감각이 낯설어 보이는 표정이었다. 처음엔 손에 묻는 느낌이 어색했는지, 손가락 한두 개를 살짝 가져다 댔다가 다시 빼는 사진이 이어지더니, 몇 장 뒤부터는 손바닥 전체로 색을 묻혀 보는 모습이 보였다. 누군가의 손을 꼭 잡고 한 발씩 도전하는 그 자세가 사진 속에서도 그대로 전해졌다. 그 사진을 회의실 들어가기 전에 한 번 더 보고 휴대폰을 엎어 놓았다. 무엇 하나 처음이 아닌 게 없는 이 시기에, 하루에 하나씩 손끝의 감각을 늘려 가는 작은 모습이 자꾸 머리에 남았다. 저녁에 안아 들어보니 손등에 옅게 분홍빛이 남아 있었다. 손을 씻고도 다 빠지지 않은 색을, 욕조 옆에서 한 번 더 들여다봤다.
화요일 (7/15) – 토하던 점심과 여벌옷 두 벌
화요일 점심을 먹다 말고 휴대폰을 봤다. 식사 후 기침을 하다 두 차례 토했다는 한 줄이 화면 위로 올라왔다. 사무실 의자에서 잠깐 멈췄다가, 다음 줄을 천천히 읽었다. 바로 갈아입혔고, 이후엔 안정을 찾았고, 분유 먹고 낮잠도 편안히 잤다는 한 줄이 뒤따랐다. 열은 없다고 했고, 세심히 관찰 중이라고 했다. 그 두 줄로 마음이 다 풀린 건 아니었지만, 적어도 그 순간엔 손에서 휴대폰을 내려놓을 수 있었다. 퇴근하고 가방을 열어 보니 사용한 옷이 비닐에 잘 묶여 있었다. 그 비닐을 손에 쥐고 한참 들여다봤다. 안아 들어보니 평소보다 조금 가벼운 것 같았고, 그 가벼움이 마음에 한 번 더 걸렸다. 잠든 옆에 앉아 여벌옷 상하 두 벌을 따로 챙겨 가방 옆 칸에 넣었다. 다음 날에는 입을 일이 없기를 바라면서.
수요일 (7/16) – 스카프 까꿍과 첫 국밥
수요일은 다행히 짧고 환한 메모로 시작했다. 분유 먹고 오전 잠 20분만 자고 일어났는데, 그 짧은 잠으로 충분히 기분이 좋아진 모양이었다. 사진 속 하린이는 스카프를 자기 머리에 살짝 덮었다 빼며 까르르 웃고 있었다. 한 번 재미를 붙이니 계속 반복했다는 말이, 사진 여러 장 속에서 그대로 보였다. 까꿍이라는 단어를 누가 가르쳐 준 것도 아닌데, 어느 순간부터 그 놀이 자체를 본인이 끌어가는 모습이 신기했다. 점심에는 이유식에 국을 살짝 말아 밥을 조금씩 시작했다는 메모도 있었다. 한 끼씩 음식이 늘어 가는 게 어른 가족 식탁과 한 발씩 가까워지는 일이라, 점심시간 책상에서 그 한 줄을 한 번 더 읽었다. 퇴근길에 보육료를 결제하면서, 약은 낮잠 전에 먹였다는 마지막 줄을 한 번 더 확인했다.
목요일 (7/17) – 처음 들어간 터널
목요일 알림장에는 사진이 한참 이어졌다. 처음엔 터널 입구에서 망설이다, 어느 순간 자기 발로 안으로 쏙 들어갔다는 한 줄이 사진들 사이에 박혀 있었다. 한 번 들어간 뒤에는 다른 놀이를 하다가도 다시 터널 쪽으로 다가갔다고 했다. 점심을 먹다 그 사진들을 차례로 넘기는데, 어딘가 안으로 들어가 본 적이 없을 그 아이가, 어떻게 한 번 들어가 봤다고 두 번째부터는 망설임 없이 가는 건지 자꾸 생각하게 됐다. 점검 다니던 시절에 어떤 회의실 문 앞에서 한참을 망설이던 기억도 같이 떠올랐다. 회사도 그런 식으로 한 번씩 ‘처음’을 통과하면 다음부터는 한결 가벼워지더라는 걸, 작은 등이 사진으로 가르쳐 줬다. 퇴근하고 안아 들었을 때 평소보다 조금 더 어깨를 펴고 있는 것 같다는 느낌은 아마 내 착각이었겠지만, 그날 저녁만큼은 그렇게 믿고 싶었다.
금요일 (7/18) – 한 주의 약 봉투를 닫으며
금요일 메모는 짧았다. 한 주가 벌써 끝났다는 인사, 다음 주도 잘 보내겠다는 한 줄, 그리고 약을 낮잠 전에 먹였다는 마지막 보고. 수건과 턱받이를 보내 달라는 부탁이 그 뒤에 붙어 있었다. 출근 버스에서 그 짧은 글을 두 번 읽었다. 사진은 평일치고 적은 편이었지만, 한 장 한 장이 한 주의 끝답게 차분했다. 점심을 천천히 먹다 보니, 이번 주는 매일 마지막 줄에 ‘약 먹였다’가 적혀 있었구나 싶어 한 번 멈췄다. 화요일의 그 메모로 시작해, 다행히 큰일 없이 한 주가 닫혔다. 퇴근 후 가방을 정리하면서 약 봉투가 남아 있는지 한 번 더 확인하고, 다음 주 가방에 수건 두 장과 턱받이 두 장을 새로 넣었다. 잠든 옆에 누워, 별일 없이 한 주가 지나간 게 얼마나 다행한 일인지 새삼 생각했다.
한 주를 마치며
이번 주는 약 봉투 다섯 번과 도전 두 번이 한 주머니에 같이 들어 있는 주였다. 월요일에는 손끝으로 색을 만나고, 화요일에는 작은 몸이 한 번 출렁였고, 수요일에는 스카프를 머리에 직접 올렸고, 목요일에는 처음으로 안으로 들어가 봤고, 금요일에는 그 모든 게 무사히 지나갔다. 한 주 내내 가방에 여벌옷과 손수건과 약 봉투가 빼곡히 들어 있었지만, 그 가방 무게가 무겁다고 느껴지지는 않았다. 작은 등이 한 주 동안 안으로 한 번 들어가 보고, 입에 새 음식이 한 숟갈 들어가 보고, 손에 새로운 색이 묻어 본 흔적이 그 가방 안에 같이 들어 있다고 생각했다. 다음 주에는 수건과 턱받이 두 장을, 그리고 가능하면 더 적은 약 봉투를 함께 보내고 싶다. 잠든 아이 옆에 누워, 한여름의 두 번째 주를 천천히 닫았다.

Last week was when the real summer began, and the second week made the heat even heavier. I started wiping the back of my hands more often on the bus to work, and one extra handkerchief found its way into her daycare bag. This week, every time I opened the daily report, something in my chest leaned a little. Around lunch on Tuesday, when the words “threw up” appeared on my screen, my shoulders froze for a second in the meeting room chair before slowly loosening. The next day and the day after, the last line of every report mentioned that medicine had been given. And somewhere in between those lines, the same little child walked into a play tunnel on her own two feet on Thursday, after standing in front of it unsure for a long while. Packing two changes of clothes and a few medicine pouches, and watching her tiny back step into something new for the first time — those two kinds of feelings lived in the same week. I carried both of them through it.
Monday (7/14) — Egg-Tok-Tok and a Fingertip Meeting Color
I opened the daily report on the bus to work on Monday. In the photo, WooRin had her small fingertip resting on a round dot of paint, frozen mid-motion. You could see in her face that the texture was something her hand had never met before. At first the feeling of paint on her skin seemed unfamiliar — she touched it with just one or two fingers and pulled back — but a few photos later, her whole palm was pressing into the color. The careful way she held someone’s hand and tried one step at a time came through, even in a still image. I looked at the photo once more before walking into a meeting, then flipped my phone face down. Almost everything is a “first” at this age, and the slow, steady way she adds one new sensation a day stayed in my head all morning. That evening when I picked her up, a faint pink still tinted the back of her hand. I looked at that color one more time next to the bathtub, the bit that hadn’t quite washed away.
Tuesday (7/15) — A Tossed Lunch and Two Spare Outfits
I was halfway through lunch on Tuesday when I checked my phone. A line rose up on the screen saying she had coughed after eating and thrown up twice. I paused in my chair, then slowly read the next line. They had changed her clothes right away, she had settled down after, drank her formula, and slept comfortably through naptime. No fever, and they were watching closely. Those two lines didn’t undo the worry, but at least for that moment I could put the phone down. After work, I opened her bag and found the used clothes tied neatly inside a plastic bag. I held that little bundle in my hand for a while. When I picked her up, she felt a little lighter than usual, and that lightness caught my chest one more time. I sat next to her after she fell asleep and packed two more spare tops and bottoms into the side pocket of her bag — hoping she wouldn’t need them the next day.
Wednesday (7/16) — Peekaboo Scarves and First Rice in Soup
Wednesday’s note started, thankfully, short and bright. She had her formula, slept just twenty minutes in the morning, and that brief nap was apparently enough to set her in a good mood for the whole day. In the photos, WooRin was lifting a scarf onto her own head, pulling it back off, and bursting into laughter. Once she found the joy in it, she kept repeating it on her own — you could see it across several photos in a row. Nobody had really taught her the word for peekaboo, but somehow, at some point, she was leading the game herself. The note also mentioned that they had started mixing a bit of soup into her rice porridge at lunch. Each new bite is a step closer to the same table the rest of the family eats at, so I read that single line one more time at my desk before finishing my own lunch. On the way home, while paying her monthly tuition, I checked the last line one more time — medicine before naptime.
Thursday (7/17) — Stepping Into Her First Tunnel
Thursday’s report had a long stream of photos. A single line was tucked among them: she had hesitated at the tunnel entrance for a while, and then, at some point, walked right in on her own. After that, even while playing with other toys, she kept coming back to the tunnel on her own. I flipped through the pictures one by one during lunch, and I kept thinking — how does a child who has never gone “inside” something quite like this go in once, and then on the second try, walk straight up to it without pausing? It reminded me of standing in front of a meeting room door, hesitating, somewhere in my career years ago. Offices work the same way: cross a first “first time” once, and the next time always feels lighter. Her tiny back taught me that with a row of photos. When I picked her up that evening, it might have been my imagination that her shoulders sat a little wider — but at least for that night, I wanted to believe it.
Friday (7/18) — Closing the Week’s Medicine Pouch
Friday’s note was short. A line saying the week had already ended, another promising another good week ahead, and finally, a quiet report that medicine had been given before naptime. A small request — to send a hand towel and a bib — sat at the end. I read that short note twice on the bus to work. The photos were fewer than other weekdays, but each one carried the quietness of a week’s ending. As I ate lunch slowly, I noticed that every report this week had ended with “gave her medicine,” and I paused. Starting from that Tuesday note, the week had closed without anything bigger happening. After work I cleaned out her bag, made sure no medicine pouches were left behind, and put two new towels and two new bibs in for the following week. I lay down next to her after she fell asleep, thinking once more how lucky a week is when nothing major happens in it.
Closing the Week
This was a week with five small medicine pouches and two small acts of courage in the same pocket. On Monday her fingertips met color, on Tuesday her tiny body wobbled once, on Wednesday she pulled a scarf over her own head, on Thursday she stepped inside something for the very first time, and on Friday all of it passed by without incident. The bag was packed all week with spare clothes, towels, and medicine pouches, but it never really felt heavy. Inside it were the marks of a tiny back going inside for the first time, a new bite of food going in, and a new color settling on her hand. Next week I want to send two more towels and two more bibs — and, if possible, fewer medicine pouches alongside them. I lay down next to her, and quietly closed the second week of midsummer.
