지난주 끝에 아이가 직접 고른 색으로 작은 변기를 사 오겠다고 썼다. 토요일 오전 이마트 유아용품 코너에서 아이는 초록 변기를 그냥 지나치더니 분홍 변기 앞에 멈춰 섰다. 초록이라고 하면 초록으로 사 주겠다던 다짐은 그렇게 싱겁게 끝났다. 그리고 월요일, 달력이 9월로 넘어갔다. 달이 바뀌면 어린이집은 새 놀이를 꺼내는데, 나는 늘 그걸 한 박자 늦게 안다. 그게 은근히 마음에 걸렸다. 그래서 이번 주는 출근 버스에서부터 사진첩을 열었고, 점심 짬마다 사진을 넘겼고, 퇴근 지하철에서는 동물 울음소리 동요를 이어폰으로 미리 들어 두었다. 저녁에 아이와 놀 거리를 하나라도 들고 들어가고 싶었다. 그런데 막상 한 주를 지나고 보니, 내가 준비한 것보다 아이가 들고 온 것이 훨씬 많았다. 멍멍 한마디로 시작해 따그닥 소리로 끝난, 유난히 시끄럽고 즐거운 한 주였다.
월요일 (8/31) – 사자를 보고 호랑이
출근 버스 정류장 7시 10분. 버스가 오기 전에 휴대폰을 열었더니, 보라색 티셔츠를 입은 아이가 교실 벽에 붙은 커다란 동물 그림판에 손을 쭉 뻗고 있었다. 양 갈래로 묶은 머리 위에 작은 토끼 핀이 꽂혀 있었다. 아침에 아내가 묶어 준 그 머리였다. 손끝이 닿은 자리는 기린 근처였는데, 눈은 위쪽 하얀 강아지 사진에 가 있었다. 이번 달은 아무래도 동물이구나 싶었다.
다음 사진에서는 바닥에 줄지어 붙은 발바닥 스티커 위에 맨발로 서서 카메라를 보고 있었다. 사자 얼굴 스티커 바로 옆이었다. 출발 신호만 기다리는 사람처럼 두 팔을 몸에 붙이고 서 있는 모습이 꼭 육상 선수 같아서, 버스에 올라타고도 한참 그 사진만 보고 있었다.
여덟 시 조금 넘어 집에 들어와 그림책을 펼쳤다. 강아지를 가리키자 아이는 망설임 없이 멍멍, 했다. 기세가 좋아서 다음 장의 사자를 짚었더니 이번에도 자신 있게 호랑이, 했다. 아내와 나는 눈만 마주치고 웃었다. 갈기 달린 커다란 고양이는 아직 다 호랑이인 모양이다. 고쳐 주려다 그만두었다. 대신 거실 바닥에 엎드려 엉금엉금 기어 다니며 어흥 소리를 냈더니, 아이가 등에 올라타서 깔깔 웃었다. 허리가 먼저 비명을 질렀지만, 그 웃음값이라면 파스 한 장쯤은 아깝지 않았다.
화요일 (9/1) – 9월의 첫날
이 날은 알림장이 없는 날이었어요. 잠든 아이 이불을 덮어 주다가 발바닥이 유난히 까매서, 오늘도 어디를 그렇게 맨발로 뛰어다녔나 혼자 웃었다.
수요일 (9/2) – 도와줘, 하는 목소리
점심시간, 회사 근처 국밥집에서 고기 건더기를 건져 먹으며 사진을 넘겼다. 별이 잔뜩 박힌 검은 옷을 입은 아이가 바닥에 앉아 길쭉한 블록을 두 손으로 붙잡고 있었다. 빨간 벽돌 무늬가 그려진 블록이었다. 예전 같으면 높이 쌓자마자 손바닥으로 와르르 무너뜨리고 박수를 쳤을 텐데, 사진 속 아이는 블록 끝을 맞추느라 입을 꾹 다물고 있었다. 무너뜨리는 재미에서 만드는 재미로 넘어가는 중인가 싶어서, 국밥이 식는 줄도 몰랐다.
몇 장 뒤에는 나비 그림 위에 빨간 크레파스로 빙글빙글 낙서가 가득했다. 아이는 손가락 끝에 파란 하트 스티커를 하나 붙인 채 그걸 한참 들여다보고 있었다. 어디에 붙일지 고르는 얼굴이었다.
저녁에 집에서 스티커 북을 꺼내 주었다. 아이는 신이 나서 첫 장을 잡았는데, 작은 손톱으로 스티커 가장자리를 아무리 긁어도 종이가 떨어지지 않았다. 몇 번 씨름하더니 스티커 북을 통째로 내 무릎에 올려놓고 도와줘, 했다. 처음 듣는 말은 아니었는데 이번엔 이상하게 또렷하게 들렸다. 귀퉁이만 살짝 들어 주었더니 나머지는 혼자 떼어 내 손등에 붙였다. 다 해 주는 것과 반만 해 주는 것의 차이를, 이 나이엔 아이가 먼저 가르쳐 준다.
목요일 (9/3) – 크게, 더 크게 동그라미
오후 네 시 회의가 끝나고 자리로 돌아와 갤럭시 화면을 손가락으로 벌렸다. 노란 꽃무늬 티셔츠에 분홍 깃이 달린 옷을 입은 아이가, 토끼 얼굴 사진 위에 빨간 크레파스로 커다란 동그라미를 그리고 있었다. 토끼 눈만 빼고 얼굴 전체가 빨간 소용돌이에 덮여 있었다. 처음엔 작게 돌던 선이 점점 바깥으로 커져 나가는 게 보였다. 짧은 영상도 하나 있었는데, 강아지 풍선을 손에 쥐고 줄을 끌듯 교실을 걸어 다니는 장면이었다. 산책이라도 시키는 줄 아는지 걸음이 제법 의젓했다.
그날 저녁엔 동대표 회의가 있어서 아홉 시 반이 넘어서야 현관을 열었다. 아이는 잠옷 차림으로 아내 품에서 반쯤 졸고 있었다. 미안한 마음에 옆에 누워 손바닥에 손가락으로 하트를 그려 주었더니, 감기던 눈을 번쩍 뜨고 하트, 사랑해, 했다. 그러고는 내 손바닥을 끌어다 자기도 뭔가를 그렸다. 하트라기보다는 동그라미에 가까웠는데, 나는 그걸 하트라고 믿기로 했다. 회의에서 들은 관리비 이야기가 그 한마디에 머릿속에서 다 지워졌다.
금요일 (9/4) – 따그닥 따그닥
퇴근 지하철에서 연 사진 속 아이는 분홍 티셔츠를 입고 책상 앞에 앉아 있었다. 종이 위에 코끼리, 사자, 돼지 얼굴이 그려져 있고, 코 자리마다 페트병 입구가 하나씩 박혀 있었다. 아이는 파란 뚜껑을 손에 쥐고 돼지 코를 노려보고 있었다. 돌려 잠그는 건 아직 손힘이 모자랄 텐데, 표정만큼은 금고를 여는 사람처럼 진지했다. 그리고 바로 다음 사진. 빨간 뚜껑을 높이 들고 이가 다 보이게 웃는 얼굴이었다. 하나는 해낸 거다. 지하철 손잡이를 잡은 채로 나도 모르게 따라 웃었다.
집에 오자마자 다 마신 생수병을 하나 헹궈 뚜껑과 함께 건네주었다. 아이는 뚜껑을 병 입구에 올려놓고 손바닥으로 꾹꾹 눌렀다. 돌리는 건 아직 아니었다. 손을 겹쳐 같이 두 번 돌려 주었더니 그다음엔 혼자 반 바퀴를 돌리고는 나를 올려다봤다. 박수를 쳐 주자 다시 뚜껑을 열어 달라고 내밀었다. 그날 밤 우리는 같은 생수병을 스무 번쯤 열고 닫았다.
잠들기 전에는 말 놀이가 시작됐다. 내가 엎드리자 아이가 냉큼 등에 올라타 내 티셔츠를 고삐처럼 움켜쥐고 따그닥, 따그닥, 하고 소리를 냈다. 달려, 소리에 맞춰 거실을 두 바퀴 돌았다. 해병대 시절 완전군장보다 이 십몇 킬로그램이 더 무겁게 느껴지는 건 아마 허리 탓이겠지만, 내려오라는 말은 끝내 하지 못했다.
한 주를 마치며
동물을 배우는 한 주였다. 사자는 아직 호랑이고, 코끼리는 조금 헷갈리고, 강아지만큼은 언제나 정확하게 멍멍이다. 이름보다 소리가 먼저 나오는 걸 보면, 아이에게 세상은 아직 눈보다 귀로 먼저 들어오는 모양이다. 그래도 이번 주에는 그 소리들 사이로 새로운 말이 끼어들었다. 도와줘, 사랑해, 그리고 따그닥. 도와달라는 말과 사랑한다는 말을 같은 주에 듣고 나니, 둘이 생각보다 가까운 말이라는 걸 알게 됐다. 다음 주말에는 아이 손을 잡고 진짜 동물을 보러 가 볼 생각이다. 사자 앞에서 아이가 또 호랑이라고 외치면, 이번엔 옆에서 작게 어흥 대신 사자, 하고 한 번만 말해 줘야겠다.

At the end of last week’s entry, I promised to buy a little potty in whatever color WooRin picked herself. On Saturday morning, in the baby aisle at E-Mart, she walked right past the green one and stopped in front of the pink one. So much for “if she says green, it’s green.” Then Monday came, and the calendar flipped to September. Whenever the month changes, daycare brings out a new theme, and I always find out a beat too late. That quietly bothers me. So this week I opened her photo album on the bus to work, flipped through photos every spare minute at lunch, and on the subway home I listened to animal-sound nursery songs through my earbuds, just to have something ready. I wanted to walk in the door with at least one game to play with her. But looking back, she brought home far more than I ever prepared. It was a loud, happy week that started with a “woof woof” and ended with a “giddy-up.”
Monday (8/31) – A lion called tiger
7:10 a.m. at the bus stop. Before the bus came, I opened my phone and found WooRin in a purple T-shirt, reaching up toward a giant animal poster on the classroom wall. A tiny bunny clip sat on top of her pigtails, the same pigtails her mom had tied that morning. Her fingertips landed somewhere near the giraffe, but her eyes were on the white puppy photo up top. Animals this month, then, I thought.
In the next photo she was standing barefoot on a trail of paw-print stickers on the floor, looking straight at the camera, right next to a lion-face sticker. Arms pinned to her sides like a sprinter waiting for the starting gun. I got on the bus and kept staring at that one photo for a good while.
I got home a little after eight and opened a picture book. When I pointed at the dog, she didn’t hesitate: “Woof woof.” She was on a roll, so I pointed at the lion on the next page, and she announced, just as confidently, “Tiger.” My wife and I just looked at each other and smiled. Apparently every big cat with a mane is still a tiger. I was about to correct her, then let it go. Instead I got down on the living room floor and crawled around roaring, and she climbed onto my back, giggling. My lower back screamed first, but for that laugh, a pain-relief patch was a bargain.
Tuesday (9/1) – The first day of September
There was no daycare note on this day. Tucking the blanket over her as she slept, I noticed how dark the soles of her feet were and laughed to myself, wondering where she’d been running around barefoot all day.
Wednesday (9/2) – “Help me”
At lunch, fishing chunks of meat out of a bowl of gukbap near the office, I scrolled through the photos. WooRin, in a black outfit covered in stars, was sitting on the floor gripping a long block with both hands, one painted with red bricks. A while ago she would have stacked it high, knocked it down with her palm, and clapped. In the photo, though, her lips were pressed tight as she lined up the edges. Maybe she’s moving from the fun of knocking things down to the fun of building them. I didn’t even notice my soup going cold.
A few photos later, a butterfly drawing was buried under swirls of red crayon. She had a blue heart sticker stuck to her fingertip and was studying it carefully, the face of someone deciding exactly where it should go.
That evening I brought out a sticker book at home. She grabbed the first page excitedly, but no matter how hard she scratched at the edge with her tiny fingernails, the sticker wouldn’t come off. After a few rounds of wrestling with it, she plopped the whole book onto my lap and said, “Help me.” It wasn’t the first time I’d heard it, but this time it sounded strangely clear. I lifted just one corner, and she peeled the rest off herself and stuck it on the back of my hand. At this age, it’s the kid who teaches you the difference between doing it all for them and doing just half.
Thursday (9/3) – Bigger and bigger circles
After a 4 p.m. meeting, I got back to my desk and pinched to zoom on my Galaxy. WooRin, in a yellow flower-print T-shirt with a pink collar, was drawing huge red crayon circles over a photo of a rabbit’s face. Everything but the rabbit’s eye was covered in a red whirlpool, and you could see the lines starting small and spiraling outward. There was a short video too: she was holding a puppy balloon and walking around the classroom as if it were on a leash. She looked very dignified, like she was taking it for a proper walk.
That evening I had a residents’ building committee meeting, so I didn’t open our front door until after 9:30. She was in her pajamas, half asleep in her mom’s arms. Feeling guilty, I lay down next to her and traced a heart on her palm with my finger. Her drooping eyes popped open and she said, “Heart! Love you.” Then she pulled my palm over and drew something of her own. It looked more like a circle than a heart, but I decided to believe it was a heart. Whatever I’d heard at that meeting about maintenance fees vanished from my head with those two words.
Friday (9/4) – Giddy-up, giddy-up
On the subway home, I opened a photo of WooRin in a pink T-shirt sitting at a table. On the sheet in front of her were the faces of an elephant, a lion, and a pig, with a plastic bottle neck stuck where each nose should be. She was holding a blue cap and glaring at the pig’s nose. Her hands probably aren’t strong enough to twist a cap shut yet, but her face was as serious as someone cracking a safe. And then the very next photo: her holding a red cap up high, grinning so wide you could see every tooth. She’d done one. Hanging onto the subway strap, I caught myself grinning right along with her.
As soon as I got home, I rinsed out an empty water bottle and handed it to her with the cap. She set the cap on top and pressed it down hard with her palm. No twisting yet. I put my hand over hers and turned it twice with her, and then she managed half a turn on her own and looked up at me. When I clapped, she held it out for me to open again. We must have opened and closed that same bottle twenty times that night.
Right before bed, horse time began. The second I got down on all fours, she hopped onto my back, grabbed my T-shirt like reins, and went, “Giddy-up, giddy-up!” At “Go!” we did two laps of the living room. Those twelve-odd kilos felt heavier than the full combat pack I used to carry in the Marines, which is probably my back’s fault, but I never could bring myself to tell her to get down.
Wrapping up the week
It was a week of learning animals. The lion is still a tiger, the elephant is a little confusing, and the dog is always, without fail, “woof woof.” Seeing the sounds come out before the names, I think the world still reaches her through her ears before her eyes. Even so, a few new words slipped in between those sounds this week: help me, love you, and giddy-up. Hearing “help me” and “love you” in the same week, I realized those two are closer than I thought. Next weekend I’m planning to take her hand and go see some real animals. And if she shouts “Tiger!” in front of the lion again, this time, instead of roaring, I’ll quietly say “lion” just once beside her.
