지난주 마지막 줄에, 그 운동화를 두 짝 다 신겨서 어린이집 문 앞까지 데려다주고 싶다고 썼다. 월요일 아침 9시 소아과에서 이제 보내도 된다는 말을 들었고, 열흘 가까이 집에만 있던 아이는 정말로 두 짝을 다 신고 현관을 나섰다. 막상 보내고 나니 마음이 이상했다. 일주일 내내 아이의 하루를 처음부터 끝까지 옆에서 봤는데, 다시 사진 몇 장과 저녁 몇 시간으로 하루를 짐작하는 생활로 돌아가야 했다. 그래서 이번 주는 평소보다 부지런을 떨었다. 반차를 내고 병원에 같이 갔고, 등원 확인서를 반으로 접어 가방 앞주머니에 넣었고, 출근 버스에서는 사진을 손가락으로 벌려 아이 입가부터 확인했다. 퇴근하면 신발도 벗기 전에 입안은 괜찮은지부터 물었다. 그런데 아이는 아팠던 이야기 대신 응가 이야기를 한가득 들고 돌아왔다. 걱정으로 시작한 한 주가 웃음으로 끝난 건 순전히 그 덕이었다.
월요일 (8/24) – 두 짝 다 신은 아침
이 날은 알림장이 없는 날이었어요. 진료실을 나와 그 길로 어린이집까지 걸어가 아이 손을 넘겨주고 출근했는데, 지하철 안에서 내내 현관 앞에 가지런히 놓였던 운동화 두 짝이 눈에 밟혔다.
화요일 (8/25) – 손톱 밑의 찰흙
이 날은 알림장이 없는 날이었어요. 밤에 손을 씻기는데 손톱 밑에 회색 찰흙이 조금 끼어 있어서, 오늘은 뭘 그렇게 열심히 주물렀나 혼자 웃었다.
수요일 (8/26) – 누구 거야, 하는 질문
점심시간, 회사 1층 CU에서 삼각김밥 하나를 사 들고 자리로 돌아와 휴대폰을 열었다. 첫 사진부터 웃음이 터졌다. 책상 위에 기저귀가 하나씩 놓여 있고, 토마토가 그려진 흰 티셔츠를 입은 아이가 그 기저귀를 손바닥으로 꾹 누르고 있었다. 뒤로 넘기니 기저귀 안에서 회색 덩어리가 나왔다. 어젯밤 손톱 밑에 끼어 있던 찰흙의 정체가 그거였다.
다음 사진에서 아이는 분홍 아기띠에 인형을 안고 노란 화장실 문 앞에 서 있었다. 맨발에 초록 체크 바지, 인형을 가슴에 꼭 붙인 채 문을 올려다보는 얼굴이 꼭 진지한 엄마 같았다. 이번 주는 반 전체가 화장실과 변기, 기저귀를 놀이로 배우는 중인 모양이었다. 삼각김밥 포장을 반쯤 뜯다 말고 기저귀 생각을 했다. 아직 이르다고만 여겼는데, 아이 쪽에서는 벌써 이야기가 시작된 것 같았다.
여담인데, 지난봄 코스트코에서 기저귀가 싸다고 세 박스를 한꺼번에 샀다가 아이가 금방 다음 사이즈로 넘어가는 바람에 한 박스를 통째로 동생 몫으로 돌린 적이 있다. 그 뒤로는 한 박스씩만 산다. 아이 몸은 할인 행사보다 빨리 자란다.
여덟 시 조금 넘어 집에 들어갔더니, 기저귀를 갈자마자 아이가 인형을 끌어안고 화장실로 갔다. 변기 뚜껑 위에 인형을 앉히고는 응가해, 하고 다정하게 말하더니 물 내리는 손잡이를 꾹 눌렀다. 그다음엔 내 손을 잡아끌어 세면대 앞에 세웠다. 인형 손을 씻겨야 한다는 거였다. 그러고는 변기를 손가락으로 가리키며 변기에, 변기에, 하고 두 번 말했다. 아내와 나는 동시에 웃었는데, 웃음 끝에 조금 놀랐다. 지난주까지 입이 아파 물도 겨우 삼키던 아이가, 이제는 자기 몸 이야기를 말로 꺼내고 있었다.
목요일 (8/27) – 스포이드로 내린 비
출근 버스 정류장 7시 10분. 버스를 기다리며 어제 사진을 한 번 더 넘겨 보다가, 오늘은 또 무슨 놀이를 할까 괜히 궁금해졌다. 그 궁금증은 오후 네 시 회의가 끝나고 자리로 돌아와서야 풀렸다.
회색 반팔 티셔츠를 입은 아이가 노란 스포이드를 쥐고 도화지 위로 팔을 쭉 뻗고 있었다. 도화지 위쪽엔 검은 우산이 줄지어 그려져 있고, 그 아래로 노랑, 주황, 초록 물방울이 제멋대로 떨어져 있었다. 크레파스로 박박 그은 파란 낙서 위로 물감이 번진 걸 보니, 아이 나름의 소나기였다. 입술을 꼭 다물고 스포이드 끝만 보는 얼굴을 아내에게 보냈더니, 내가 노트북 앞에서 점검 결과 들여다볼 때랑 똑같은 표정이라는 답이 왔다.
저녁엔 내가 목욕을 시켰다. 아이는 비누를 자기가 들겠다고 하더니 거품 내는 시늉을 하고, 다 끝나자 수건을 펼쳐 내 무릎에 먼저 덮어 주었다. 순서를 아는 거다. 비누, 물, 수건. 욕조 앞에 쪼그려 앉아 있으면 허리가 먼저 신호를 보내는데, 오늘은 아이가 시키는 대로 하다 보니 그것도 잊었다. 물고기 장난감을 하나씩 들어 색깔을 물었더니 파란 물고기도 초록, 빨간 물고기도 초록이었다. 가끔 빨강이 섞였다. 맞히는 것보다 대답하는 게 더 신나는 나이다. 나는 고쳐 주는 대신 옆에서 이건 파랑, 이건 빨강, 하고 한 번씩만 말해 주었다.
금요일 (8/28) – 빨래 끝
점심을 먹고 들어오는 길에 연 사진에서 아이는 노란 티셔츠를 입고 주황색 알갱이를 하나씩 집어 종이 위에 올리고 있었다. 파란 팬티 그림 위, 하얀 동그라미 자리마다 하나씩. 과자처럼 생겨서 한 알쯤은 입에 들어가지 않았을까 싶었는데, 사진 속 아이는 생각보다 진지했다. 손가락으로 꾹 누르고, 데굴데굴 굴려 보고, 다시 제자리에 올려놓는다. 그 짧은 집중이 요즘 부쩍 길어졌다.
여덟 시 조금 넘어 현관을 열었더니 거실 건조대 앞에 아이가 서 있었다. 아내가 걷어 놓은 양말을 하나씩 집어 건조대 살에 다시 걸더니, 다 걸고 나서는 두 팔을 번쩍 들고 빨래 끝, 하고 외쳤다. 아내 말로는 저녁 내내 그랬다고 한다. 맞벌이 집 빨래는 늘 밤 열 시가 넘어야 돌아가고, 아이는 그 시간에 대개 잠들어 있다. 그런데도 어디선가 봐 둔 거다. 우리가 피곤한 얼굴로 빨래를 털어 너는 모습을, 이 아이는 언제 그렇게 눈에 담아 두었을까.
아이를 재우고 나서 기저귀 박스를 열어 남은 개수를 셌다. 반 박스쯤 남아 있었다. 다음 박스를 주문할지, 이참에 아이 팬티를 몇 장 먼저 사 둘지 한참 고민하다가 결국 아무것도 주문하지 않았다. 아이가 정할 일을 내가 먼저 정해 버리는 것 같아서였다.
한 주를 마치며
열흘 가까이 집에 있던 아이가 다시 어린이집으로 돌아간 한 주였다. 월요일 아침엔 입안의 수포 자국을 세던 내가, 금요일 밤엔 기저귀 개수를 세고 있었다. 걱정의 종류가 바뀌었다는 것만으로도 충분히 좋은 한 주였다. 이번 주 아이가 집에 들고 온 말은 응가, 변기, 초록, 그리고 빨래 끝이었다. 아픈 동안 꾹 삼키고 있던 말들이 한꺼번에 쏟아져 나오는 것 같았다. 기저귀를 떼는 건 아직 먼 이야기라고 생각했는데, 아이 쪽에서 먼저 문을 두드리고 있다. 서두르지는 않으려 한다. 다만 다음 주말엔 아이 손을 잡고 마트에 가서, 아이가 직접 고른 색깔의 작은 변기 하나를 사 와야겠다. 초록이라고 하면 초록으로.

On the last line of last week’s entry, I wrote that I wanted to put both of those sneakers on her and walk her all the way to the daycare door. At 9 a.m. on Monday, the pediatrician told us she was good to go back, and after nearly ten days stuck at home, WooRin really did walk out the front door with both shoes on. Once she was gone, though, I felt strange. For a whole week I’d seen her day from start to finish, and now I was back to guessing at it from a handful of photos and a few hours in the evening. So this week I was a little extra. I took the morning off and went to the clinic with her, folded the return-to-daycare note in half and tucked it into the front pocket of her bag, and on the bus to work I zoomed in on every photo to check the corners of her mouth first. When I got home, I asked whether her mouth still hurt before I’d even taken my shoes off. But instead of stories about being sick, she came home with an armful of stories about poop. That’s the only reason a week that started with worry ended with so much laughing.
Monday (8/24) – Both shoes on
There was no daycare note on this day. I walked her straight from the clinic to daycare, handed her over, and headed to work, and the whole subway ride I kept picturing those two little sneakers sitting side by side at our front door.
Tuesday (8/25) – Clay under her nails
There was no daycare note on this day. Washing her hands that night, I found a little gray clay stuck under her fingernails and laughed to myself, wondering what on earth she’d been squishing so hard all day.
Wednesday (8/26) – “Whose is it?”
At lunch I grabbed a triangle kimbap from the convenience store on the first floor of my office building, went back to my desk, and opened my phone. The very first photo made me burst out laughing. There was a diaper laid out on the table for each kid, and WooRin, in a white T-shirt with a tomato on it, was pressing hers down flat with her palm. A few photos later, a gray lump came out of that diaper. So that was the mystery clay from under her nails last night.
In the next photo she was standing in front of a yellow bathroom door with a baby doll in a pink carrier. Barefoot, green plaid pants, the doll held tight against her chest, looking up at the door with the serious face of a very responsible mom. It looked like the whole class was spending the week learning about bathrooms, toilets, and diapers through play. I stopped halfway through unwrapping my kimbap and started thinking about diapers. I’d always told myself it was too early, but it seemed she’d already started that conversation on her own.
A little side story: last spring I bought three boxes of diapers at once at Costco because they were on sale, and she moved up a size so fast that one whole box ended up going to her little sibling. Since then I only buy one box at a time. Kids grow faster than sales come around.
I got home a little after eight, and the moment her diaper was changed, she hugged her doll and marched into the bathroom. She sat the doll on the toilet lid, told it “Go poop” in the sweetest voice, then pushed the flush handle down hard. Next she grabbed my hand and dragged me to the sink, because the doll’s hands needed washing, obviously. Then she pointed at the toilet and said “In the potty, in the potty,” twice. My wife and I laughed at the exact same moment, and right at the end of that laugh I felt a little stunned. Last week this kid could barely swallow water because her mouth hurt so much, and now she was putting her own body into words.
Thursday (8/27) – Rain from a dropper
The bus stop, 7:10 a.m. While I waited, I scrolled back through yesterday’s photos one more time and found myself wondering what she’d be up to today. I didn’t find out until I got back to my desk after a 4 p.m. meeting.
WooRin, in a gray short-sleeved tee, had her arm stretched all the way out over a big sheet of paper, gripping a yellow dropper. Along the top of the paper was a row of black umbrellas, and underneath them yellow, orange, and green drops had landed wherever they pleased. With the paint bleeding over the blue crayon scribbles she’d scrubbed on first, it was her own little rain shower. I sent my wife the one where her lips are pressed tight and her eyes are locked on the tip of the dropper, and she wrote back that it’s the exact face I make when I’m staring at audit results on my laptop.
That evening I gave her a bath. She insisted on holding the soap herself, pretended to work up a lather, and when we were done she spread the towel over my knees first. She knows the order now: soap, water, towel. Usually when I crouch in front of the tub my lower back is the first to complain, but tonight I was so busy following her instructions that I forgot all about it. I held up her fish toys one by one and asked what color they were. The blue fish was green. The red fish was also green. Every so often a red slipped in. At this age, answering is way more fun than getting it right. So instead of correcting her, I just said it once beside her: this one’s blue, this one’s red.
Friday (8/28) – All done with the laundry
On my way back from lunch I opened the day’s photos. WooRin, in a yellow T-shirt, was picking up little orange pellets one at a time and setting them on a sheet of paper, one in each white circle on a picture of a pair of blue underpants. They looked so much like snacks that I figured at least one had to have ended up in her mouth, but in the photos she was more serious than I expected. Press it down with a finger, roll it around, put it back in its spot. That little window of focus has been getting noticeably longer lately.
When I opened the door a little after eight, she was standing in front of the drying rack in the living room. She was picking up the socks my wife had just taken down and hanging them back on the rack one by one, and when she’d hung the last one she threw both arms in the air and shouted, “Laundry done!” My wife said she’d been doing it all evening. In a two-working-parent house, the laundry doesn’t go in until after 10 p.m., and by then she’s usually asleep. And yet she’d picked it up somewhere. Shaking out wet clothes with tired faces and hanging them up, when did she ever see us do that and tuck it away?
After she fell asleep, I opened the diaper box and counted what was left. About half a box. I went back and forth for a long time over whether to order the next box or pick up a few pairs of little underpants for her first, and in the end I didn’t order anything. It felt like I’d be deciding something that was hers to decide.
Wrapping up the week
This was the week she went back to daycare after nearly ten days at home. On Monday morning I was counting the blister marks in her mouth, and by Friday night I was counting diapers. Just the fact that the kind of worry had changed made it a pretty good week. The words she brought home this week were poop, potty, green, and laundry done. It felt like all the words she’d been holding in while she was sick came pouring out at once. I thought potty training was still a long way off, but she’s the one knocking on that door first. I’m not going to rush it. But next weekend I think I’ll take her hand, go to the store, and bring home a little potty in whatever color she picks herself. If she says green, green it is.
