For our overseas readers ❤️
Summer break was over, and WooRin was heading back to daycare. After nearly two weeks of having her home with us, sending her off again on Monday morning felt stranger than her very first drop-off last spring. Back then I told myself she was too little to understand. Now she understands everything. She knows where we’re going when I put her shoes on, and she knows who she’s about to see when we get out of the car. That should have made me feel less guilty. Somehow it made me feel more. On Sunday night I washed her nap blanket and repacked her bag, and at the bus stop at 7:10 on Monday I just kept staring at my phone, guessing how her first day back was going. But the week went the opposite way from what I was worried about. While I was busy being anxious about letting her go, she was in her classroom taking care of someone for the first time, and finding things and pointing them out to others.
Monday (8/10) – “Baby, poo-poo”
A morning meeting ran long, so I didn’t get to lunch until 1:30. Halfway through a bowl of kimchi stew I opened my phone, and there she was with a baby doll lying across her lap. In her hand was a diaper. Two months ago she was the one wearing them. She unfolded it, folded it back, stuck her hand inside and pulled it out again, with the exact face she makes at something she’s never seen before. It made me laugh. To her, a diaper is already a strange object. After just two months.
Then I found out she’d sat the doll on a little potty and cheered it on — “poo-poo, poo-poo” — and I put my spoon down. I thought back to early June, when we were potty training. How many times we wiped the living room floor, how she cried in front of the potty, how we were both so worn out we wondered if we were doing it right. And here was the kid who came through all that, doing the same thing for her doll. Taking the words she’d heard and giving them back to someone else in her own voice. I think that’s how anyone learns to care for others. You can only give what you’ve been given.
When I got home a little after eight, she was already bathed. It was her first day with her friends in two weeks, and she must have been tired, because the moment she sat in my lap her head started to droop. It stung a little to think her friends were more exciting than the dad she’d spent the whole break playing with. It was a good kind of sting.
Tuesday (8/11) – A quiet day
There was no daycare note on this day. I still kept refreshing the app on the subway home.
Wednesday (8/12) – “Cicada, here!”
I’d seen the notice last week about a fire drill that morning, so even sitting in a meeting room around ten, it was on my mind. How loud must that alarm have sounded to her? Did she cry? Did she hold her teacher’s hand tight on the way out? At lunch I saw the photos — she was sitting outside after the drill, looking perfectly fine. That was enough.
Outdoor play was painting with water. You dip a brush in water and paint the ground, and that spot turns dark for a moment before the sun dries it away. She painted circles, saying “round, roun~” as she went. I stood in the hallway outside the office restroom and looked at that picture for a long time. The way she sees the world is changing. Until last month she was putting a name on every object. Now she’s finding shapes inside them. A ball is round, a plate is round, Mom’s face is round. Finding the same thing among different things — I wonder if that’s where thinking begins.
But what I held onto longest was the cicada story. She was peering around between the trees and called out, “Cicada, here!” — and her friends came running, asking “Where? Where?” In the end, nobody found a cicada. There probably wasn’t one where she pointed, either. Still, I think that was the biggest thing that happened this week. Up until last week she was holding things up saying “Look at this!” This time she announced something she hadn’t even seen yet, and the other kids believed her and followed. She went from a kid who shows things to a kid who leads. Whether the cicada was there hardly matters.
On the bus home, the cicadas in the roadside trees were screaming like crazy. It was so loud, and yet somehow I liked hearing it.
Thursday (8/13) – A T-shirt full of circles
This was the one day this week I got to hold the evidence in my own hands. When I came home, a little white T-shirt was spread out on the dining table. Green, blue, red, yellow, orange. Stamp marks overlapping every which way, and most of them circles. The circles she’d painted in water on the ground yesterday — the ones that dried and vanished — were now on a shirt in paint that won’t wash out. From a picture that disappears to a picture that stays. I wondered how that difference felt to her.
I held up the shirt and asked, “What’s this?” She pointed at a triangle and said “Triangle.” Then she pointed at a square and said “Triangle.” My wife and I caught each other’s eye and both cracked up. I guess a square is still some kind of cousin of a triangle for now. Only when she touched a circle did her voice get louder. Right now, in her world, circles are the clearest thing there is.
In her bag there was also an empty jar with a fish picture on it, plus some paint — a little take-home activity for a rainy day, shaking paint and water together and talking about rain. We’ll bring it out when it rains, so I put it up on the shelf above the sink. There was also a list of supplies for the fall term: six toothbrushes and a tube of toothpaste. At eleven that night, after she was asleep, I added kids’ toothbrushes to my cart on the grocery app. Seeing the number six, I thought: a semester really is long. By the time all six of those are worn out, what will she be doing?
Side note: they also played a “poo path” game, walking carefully between poo pictures stuck on the floor without stepping on any. At our house too, “poo-poo” is the most popular word right now — she falls over giggling the second anyone says it. For a kid who’s just left diapers behind, poo isn’t something scary anymore, it’s something funny. I think that’s the real graduation.
Friday (8/14) – On the edge of a long weekend
There was no daycare note on this day. It was the Friday before the Liberation Day holiday, so the office emptied out early, and for once I opened our front door before seven.
Wrapping up the week
I thought that after the break she’d have to adjust all over again. I expected tears at drop-off and fussy evenings. But when I line up what she did this week, it’s the other way around. She put a diaper on her doll, found circles and drew them, and pointed out a cicada nobody else had spotted. She took care of someone, she recognized patterns, she led. I was the one adjusting — from whole days together during the break back down to a few hours in the evening. We did make it to the sea for a day during the break, by the way. She didn’t say a word at the waves, and she didn’t hold up a seashell either. She just gripped my pants tight and stared for a long time. That was fine too. I hope it rains once next week. I want to take that fish jar down from the shelf, and this time be right next to her when she shakes it.
